Has anyone stayed in a haunted hotel?
I love ghost stories and the supernatural and would love to stay in a haunted hotel but probably end up awake all night regretting it!
Yes I know most are fake but any stayed anywhere really spooky and can recommend?

I know someone who stayed at the Jamaica Inn and had a funny turn overnight. He is convinced that he was possessed by spirits and when he got home he had flagellation marks all down his back. Disclaimer: I was not there and cannot vouch for this but he is adamant!

OriginalM · 11/01/2022 22:15

I've always wanted to stay at the Jamaica inn!

Oh wow I love that film, I didn't realise it was a hotel.
OriginalM · 11/01/2022 22:19

Posted too soon, I've read lots about Jamaica inn although not sure I'd like marks all over me.
I'm actually scaring myself in my own house in bed thinking my dressing gown on the door is a person so I don't know how I'd cope in a haunted house Grin

Lumley Castle! Make sure you get a room in the castle rather than the courtyard. DH and DS, who were sharing a room, had a very unnerving experience!

Nandakanda · 11/01/2022 22:22

Davenport Hotel in Dublin - myself and DP kept awake most of the night by the sound of doors creaking and footsteps of somebody walking around our room. We thought it was each other at first, but nooo!

Strawberry0909 · 11/01/2022 22:23

My parents stayed in the Jamaica Inn, DM freaked put convinced my DF was possessed in the night, DF only reported seeing an orb but I'm sure it's just the imagination!

OhWhyNot · 11/01/2022 22:25

Stayed at The Mermaid Inn in Rye. It’s famous for ghosts I think one room in particular

I was scared but had a little too much to drink so fell asleep very quickly and deeply thankfully

It’s a lovely place with lovely staff but had an eerie feeling I think because it’s so old

missionhopefullypossible · 11/01/2022 22:26

I stayed in a place in Wales a long time ago. We'd booked in a B&B but they had to cancel and they asked if it was ok to transfer us to the local manor house that didn't really advertise. It was fab. The original parts were from the 13th century. However the male ghost was from the C17th. Unfortunately, I didn't see him.

DiddyHeck · 11/01/2022 22:29

Most are fake??

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 11/01/2022 22:44

No but I’d like too... I live for all that...

I stayed in a hotel in rural Sweden which had a really weird vibe about it. The whole village/small town was quite oppressive though.

Two hotels in St Ives, Cornwall (Tregenna, of G7 fame, and the St Ives harbour) are reputedly haunted. I worked in both as a teen and had some strange experiences.

The Elvetham in Fleet looks/feels like it should be but when I’ve stayed there (with work a few times) it’s felt quite benign.

The Dolphin in Southampton has a really big reputation for being haunted.

ineedsun · 11/01/2022 22:55

Stayed at Jamaica Inn and it was very uneventful but Chillingham Castle was good

gelert5619 · 11/01/2022 23:25

In around 1981, newly separated, I treated myself to a weekend at The Red Lion on Colchester High Street. The staff were lovely as I was nervous, not having stayed alone at a hotel before. They advised me not to investigate round a corner near my room. No reason given. On the last day I wandered around and saw that there was a very old banquet type hall with the expected cast iron chandelier for candles. On leaving, the staff told me that some staff/residents had bad experiences there and that it was haunted. Recently, I googled the place and it was haunted by a malevolent spirit!!!

ffscovid · 11/01/2022 23:31

@Policyschmolicy I also used to work at Tregenna as a teen (mid-late 1990s) and always felt uneasy in some parts of the hotel.

St Briavals youth hostel is the spookiest place I've ever stayed. Lots of weird creaking and bumps in the night!

Policyschmolicy · 12/01/2022 05:58

How funny! I don’t think we quite overlapped and I worked in a part that was being used by another business but it had an odd vibe for sure.

The Porthminster had a couple of bedrooms I didn’t much like and one that was converted to a store room allegedly because of supernatural goings on but that could have been made up.

OriginalM · 12/01/2022 07:20

@ineedsun please could you tell me more about Chillingham castle. We have looked at staying here but there isn't many pics of the rooms and Is quite expensive but a lot of reviews have mentioned strange things

Both Chillingham Castle and Jamaica Inn market, as well as many others, market themselves as "haunted". The reason for this is that it attracts people and brings in money.

Blimey! Where to start? It’s in the wilds of Northumberland, is an actual castle which in the summer in the day is open to the public. It’s owned by a fella who is quite eccentric and the place is full of weird old tat. You can stay in apartments in the main castle which is what we did or I think now they have other apartments in different areas. We stayed in the grey apartments twice (actually maybe three times). Spooky stuff apart it’s a great thing to do with a group of friends, there’s a small kitchen, big table, a log burner so if all you do is stay in the apartment eating and drinking it’s a nice way to spend the evening (take lots of layers in the winter, it’s bloody freezing. There are lots of odd noises and phenomena, taps turning on and off on their own, sound of breathing in your ear when no one is there, dogs panting, someone in our party saw some disembodied legs. There are other weird noises that terrified us but in the light of day turned out to be nothing so take some healthy cynicism. Not sure if it’s still on, but you could do a ghost tour after dark which was quite dramatised but it’s nice to see the place in the dark, and hear about the history. You can’t just wander around the castle so you can’t see the different rooms without the tour.

Most haunted did an episode there which all turned out to be a load of nonsense but it will give you a sense of what the place is like. Can’t remember how to do links on here but there is a Wikipedia entry on it

Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland, County Durham/ Northumberland; absolutely beautiful hotel. Would thoroughly recommend. There used to be a little sitting room haunted by Lady Crewe I think which was lovely but very atmospheric.

Tilmouth Park Country Hotel en route from Northumberland to Edinburgh. This was many years ago, but it had full suits of armour in the bedrooms and a very "historic" feeling about it in various areas.

Some of the reviews mention the owner is eccentric and lovely but then another on Tripadvisor says he was aggressive and unwelcoming and a really bizarre review left recently which I don't know what to make of it! The apartments say they sleep 4 can you remember if there is 2 separate bedrooms or it's just a pull out sofa?
OP posts:
ineedsun · 12/01/2022 09:17

Grey apartments is two separate bedrooms. We actually had 6 people staying because there are a couple of proper ghost hunter people with us and the wanted to stay in the main hall so they slept on air beds that they bought. Was a while ago though so they might not let you do that now. We never met the owner so I can’t comment on that
