Wind chimes - yay or nay

I personally love the sound of wind chimes in a gentle breeze. However, I live in row a terraced houses with long narrow back gardens that converge. I do wonder if I would forever be known as “fecking wind chime lady” if I hang up my new chimes.

@SalsaLove

These are proper bronze chimes. The picture on the box is of hills and a lake - think Sound of Music in summer. Perhaps an indication that they are more appreciated in the middle of nowhere?
I think you're probably right!
SalsaLove · 11/01/2022 08:33

Alright everyone. I can see which way the wind is blowing (cough, sorry, cough). Thank you for your answers.

Actually really good idea about the soundtrack. I have alexa send me to sleep with rain and thunderstorms- I bet there’s chimes too.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 11/01/2022 09:36

We have a couple of wind chimes and I only hang them out during the day if it's a light breeze. I'd never leave them out when it's windy or 27/7. I also don't hang them out every day. Neither of my direct neighbours use their gardens. I wouldn't like to think I was bothering anyone, but the other neighbours drum, talk loudly and have pop music going so.....

Somanysocks · 11/01/2022 10:31

Get a hot tub instead Op, much less annoying to the neighbours

(I like windchimes)

BournvilleGreen · 11/01/2022 10:39

I actually really like them, but the mid/deeper pitched ones, not the really high tinkly type.
I find them reassuring and calming.

But then, I like the clock chiming loudly every 15 minutes too... and many people can't stand that.

TonTonMacoute · 11/01/2022 10:57

Aah, bliss!

Wind chimes!? No way.

FreshandLively · 11/01/2022 11:21

My neighbours have some that aren't unpleasant on the kind of day you'll be sitting in the garden, in fact a bit of background noise gives additional privacy, but they're far enough down a long garden that I can't hear them from the house. That would drive me mad

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2022 11:28

Nope, totally anti-social.

I stayed in a caravan years ago and the (empty) caravan in front had wind chimes.

I ended up grabbing a roll of parcel tape and sticking them together, to shut the bloody things up.

Hugasauras · 11/01/2022 11:30

Nooooo. Unless you want someone to climb into your garden in the dead of night to cut the strings.

manseymoo1987 · 11/01/2022 11:30

Nope! I don't mind them but when we moved house we quickly realised neighbour had them. In summer it was a nightmare as my dh was frequently woke up with them as window was open. I personally don't see the point of them. If you like sound download an app and have it playing through your house.

SalsaLove · 11/01/2022 11:30

I like the idea of putting them out during a gentle breeze. Certainly not in the gales we’ve recently been having. We also live down the road from a church that rings it’s bells throughout the day so I wonder if we’re not all a bit used to things ringing.

I love them, but I appreciate not everyone does so I only hang mine up when I'm going out to sit in the garden; I take them down again when I'm going back inside.

ExtremelyDetermined · 11/01/2022 11:35

No, bloody irritating. Church bells are totally different.

BearSoFair · 11/01/2022 11:35

@VitalsStable

I'd be over the fence with a pair of scissors cutting the bloody chimes off. It's rude and inconsiderate to expect your neighbours to listen to the sound of something because you enjoy it. Download a wind chime soundtrack and listen to it through earphones.
House 2 doors along from us did this to NDN's chimes a few years ago! We were quietly grateful to be honest.
SalsaLove · 11/01/2022 12:03

Fortunately none of my neighbours are as athletically inclined as VitalsStable! 😆

No no no!

NannyGythaOgg · 11/01/2022 12:19

I have some that I hang out sometimes in the warmer weather when I am sitting in the garden. When I go in - so do the wind chimes.

DillDanding · 11/01/2022 12:23

Jesus. If I lived near wind chimes it would drive me insane. I’d be chopping the fuckers off under cover of darkness if the neighbours insisted on them.

I think it’s incredibly selfish if you have neighbours. Plus tacky. Please don’t do it.

sueelleker · 11/01/2022 12:39

Not metal, but we've got a set of bamboo ones which have a much gentler sound.

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 11/01/2022 16:28

Our neighbours have them and I hate, hate, hate them, particularly as we can't open our windows at night in summer to catch a breeze, without hearing them jangling away at the slightest breath of one.

emmathedilemma · 11/01/2022 16:29

hell no, bloody annoying!! Someone down the road from me has a couple on the balcony of their flat and every time I walk past and hear them I wonder how their neighbours tolerate it.

SeraphinaDombegh · 11/01/2022 16:59

@Aerielview

I love them, but I appreciate not everyone does so I only hang mine up when I'm going out to sit in the garden; I take them down again when I'm going back inside.
This approach seems fair. I'd personally get very irritated by a neighbour having them outside all the time, but I could cope with them for occasional short periods. After all, they have to put up with the noise of my children in the garden in spring and summer Grin
bananaboats · 11/01/2022 17:02

Oh no please don't our neighbours had some that drove me mad had to keep the windows closed at all times!

SalsaLove · 11/01/2022 17:08

I do appreciate all the feedback and have decided to only put them up when I’m in the garden, perhaps for an hour. Xx
