Sainsbury’s online shop?

I don’t usually order from Sainsbury’s but I noticed they now do same day slots so it seemed like a good idea but just checked my receipt and half my order wasn’t available? 13 subs and 4 unavailable items, am I right in thinking that Sainsbury’s charge you extra for the subs unlike Tesco? Where you don’t pay the extra for the sub? As all the subs are considerably more money? Also I heard they don’t refund you the money if you send them back you only get vouchers to use again on their website? (Unlikely to want to use them again 😫) but the weirdest one is I bought one 6 pack of skips crips and they’ve subbed it for FOUR packs of quavers costing over £6?! Why would they do that 😕 anyone else had trouble with Sainsbury’s?

Only used Click and Collect, they charge you the difference for subs but ime rejects are refunded.

RedCandyApple · 10/01/2022 16:20

The pack of skips I bought was £1 they’ve substituted that for 4 bags of quavers costing £6.80?! How does that make sense

Odd! Yes, if you reject things on the doorstep they’ll give you a refund. I find them ok generally but have never tried same-day slots.

Items you refuse are refunded, you pay more (or less) for subs and then get a voucher for the difference. So if you order something for £1, the sub is £1.50 you'll pay £1.50 but get a 50p voucher.

starfishmummy · 10/01/2022 16:29

I use them. But not for same day.

Mostly I have specified "no substitutes" but the odd time something has been sent that I have rejected I have had a prompt refund.

RedCandyApple · 10/01/2022 16:33

Glad to hear they refund, I don’t mind substitutes as Tesco’s is normally sensible but 4 packs of quavers when someone bought one pack of crisps I don’t get that 😏

That is a very random sub! I've always found them great, but I think like anything it depends, at least in part, on your local store they pick from.

Mumof3babes · 10/01/2022 22:39

Just done my first online shop due to isolating last week. Can’t believe I’ve never done this before 🙈 what a revelation! They only substituted x2 things from my large order and I rejected x1 and got a voucher to spend again next time. I wonder if it depends on the time of day. I had an early morning delivery so assuming they have most things in stock then which helps.

I got £12 off my first order, had a look online and can’t see any offers for returning customers. Is anyone aware of any?

delilahbucket · 10/01/2022 22:43

They refund you if you return the subs, voucher for the price difference if you keep it. They've been awful for subs for over a month now. Never known it so bad. Struggled to get basics for weeks, things like foil. Our Christmas delivery had £40 worth of stuff subbed on a £79 shop. I've never known them like this and been using their online service for 12 years.

ThePug · 10/01/2022 23:33

For whatever reason they've subbed you all those crisps, if you keep them you'll have all those crisps effectively for £1 as you'll get a £5.80 straight money off voucher added to your account for your next shop. I ordered a load of pigs in blankets after Christmas that were showing as 75% off, of course no stock so I got subbed full packs TTD of sausages instead. Voucher for the difference so decent sausages for under 80p per pack.

voxnihili · 11/01/2022 06:28

I use sainsburys on a weekly basis. They definitely refund items you refuse. My subs are usually ok and I accept them - find it a good way to try new products! You get a voucher for the difference which is fine for me as I just use it on my next shop. My best voucher was for £35 when the wine I chose was out of stock and they sent me bottles that cost twice the price and I ended up with £70 of wine for £35. Although they’ll maybe gain long-term for that as I won’t go back to the cheaper one!

Billandben444 · 11/01/2022 07:24

I'll never use them again. I ticked no substitutes which was fine so overpaid by nearly £30 for stuff not in stock. Got online vouchers for next shop - what!! So, had to order again to use it up and ended up with £4 overpaid - have left it there as I can't see it ever getting down to zero! Why no online refund?

RedCandyApple · 11/01/2022 08:49

Thanks all, I’m not sure I will use them again either. will stick with Tesco’s from now on I think (I’ve never had so many subs and unavailable products)

That doesn't make any sense. They only give you credit for subs you accept.

What do you mean by you overpaid £30 for stuff that wasn't in stock? Confused

RedCandyApple · 11/01/2022 09:03

Im guessing they sent subs even though they ticked not to? Tbh I can see how it would cost £30 more when they sent me £6.80 worth of crisps as a sub when they crisps I bought was only £1 where’s the logic in that 😏

Well you just refuse them then.

Honestly, it's not hard.

RedCandyApple · 11/01/2022 09:07

But they already charge you for them then you expect to have to wait for a refund, at least Tesco’s there’s no extra charge.

They refund mega quick. Mine was refunded within hours and I had a late night delivery
Babdoc · 11/01/2022 09:13

My Sainsbugs delivery is brilliant. I’ve been using them for nearly a year now, as my long Covid fatigue makes it hard to shop in person.
They rarely substitute anything, and when they do it’s a superior product for the same price (the difference gets refunded).
I also save on petrol, as the nearest store is a 30 mile round trip.
My only minor quibble is they don’t stock my favourite porridge brand. So every couple of months I get a Waitrose delivery instead - which comes from Edinburgh, on a 100 mile round trip! And surprisingly for a delivery charge that’s £1 less than Sainsbugs, but the actual products are way more expensive.

Alakazam8 · 11/01/2022 09:23

I use Sainsbury’s and have for a few years. If I don’t like a product when I see it, order the wrong size or wrong product then I just hand it back and get a full refund.
Usually just one or two subs if any. The only downside is the product range can be a little limited compared to Ocado and I’m finding it hard to forgive them for stopping making my fave cookies!

MrsAntonioConte · 11/01/2022 09:24

I’ve been using online Sainsburys for a long long time! And I have to admit their substitutions are hilarious and inconvenient but they do issue refunds / price difference!

They substituted our veggie sausages for pork sausages. We eat less meat for cost & environmental reasons so we weren’t offended - more baffled and found it hilarious!

Mortifying if you’re actually a vegetarian or vegan though!

They’re getting better though. One time I ordered 5 x single loose bananas. And the picker sent 5 x 10 pack bananas…. I had 50 bananas & Sainsbury’s told me to keep them all - but the guy on the phone at Customer Services was in hysterics.

I prefer them over Tesco because our local Tesco are awful for substitutes and always have been. Short dates too.

I guess it all comes down to who they’ve employed etc

@RedCandyApple there has been a weird issue with supply of crisps. It could be that they had no standard crisps as an alternative and the picker probably thought you’d rather Quavers instead of a share bag of extra spicy nuts or something. I appreciate the frustration though!

Smile
RedCandyApple · 11/01/2022 09:30

I don’t mind quavers that wasn’t the issue, it was I had only bought one pack of skips so why give me 4 packs of quavers 😂 although I’ve heard of worse substitutes it just seemed very random!

I expect it varies from store to store. Mine is brill. I got an apologetic email from my Sainsbugs, saying they didn’t have any bog standard lamb steaks, and they hoped I wouldn’t mind having hand reared luxury Ronaldsay lamb for the same price instead…!

Medievalist · 11/01/2022 10:13

I recently did a Sainsburys order and was shocked by the limited ranges available on line compared with when I was using them regularly during the first lockdown.

Can't see me continuing to use them if this remains the case.

MrsMariaReynolds · 11/01/2022 10:18

I used to love Sainsbury online shopping, even shelled out for a delivery pass during the worst of the pandemic, but in the end decided not to renew---not for the products themselves (although I did have a few suspicious substitutions) but for the drivers. The overwhelming majority of them were great, but there were a few that would get misdirected by their satnav and then be quite annoyed with me, moaning about how they only get 7 minutes per delivery and getting lost doesn't help...etc, etc, as if I somehow sabotaged their system by living where I do (in a populated area of terraced houses near a city centre), so not some dark country lane) The deliveries just made me anxious because I never knew who was going to show up at the door, and what sort of mood they'd be in. No amount of Twitter alerts seemed to make a difference, so I just shop in person again.

Now Sainsbury's SmartShop app is another moan for another day...
