Yoto player - does anybody have one?

Thinking about buying one for my 5 year old son, but it's so much money and it's hard to tell if they're any good or not just by looking at the website. I'm kicking myself that I didn't just get one at Christmas. He has a bedtime story or two at night but isn't always ready to go to bed and I'm considering this as something that might be good for him. If you have one does your child a) like it and b) use it well independently? Thank you!

Why not just use the audible app on his tablet? Or your phone?

PinkestMoon · 09/01/2022 09:09

I don't want to leave my phone in his room with him at night and he doesn't have a tablet

We have a tonies box which is similar, we bought it for DD when she was 3 and she would use it of an evening to fall asleep listening to songs/stories. Now she’s nearly 5 I think the yoto player would be more suitable for her age and wish we had just bought a yoto player in the first place.

Dd4 has one, and uses it to help her wind down sleep (after her bedtime stories before anyone accuses me of being too lazy to read to her!!! Grin)

She also has it on in the background if she is painting or playing etc. i even listen to some of the podcasts and the radio myself!

babycornfortea · 09/01/2022 09:18

They've also just brought out a cheaper mini version which looks like it does pretty much the same as the bigger one, but don't quote me on that.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 09/01/2022 09:18

We got one at Christmas for our just turned 2 year old and he loves it. He can already use it independently and I can see it lasting and growing with him for years.

I would definitely recommend it. There are a great assortment of cards and I love the make your own feature, plus it was so easy to set up and if necessary I can control it from my phone.

PinkestMoon · 09/01/2022 09:21

@babycornfortea yes I've seen the mini one and wondered if that would be a good compromise. Think it's portable, not sure what the differences are. I find their website quite infuriating to navigate!

These are really helpful responses, thank you

I bought the Yoto mini for my 5 year old and It does pretty much everything that the large version does, just less clock and light features. It’s very easy for him to use and control. And we got his grandparents to record themselves reading stories and then loaded to a card which has been lovely. If you Google you will be able to find a discount code, they are often posted on here.

Muststopeating · 09/01/2022 09:24

I bought one for my 3 and 4 year old for Christmas.

I need to encourage them to use it a bit more, ideally I'd like to setup a quiet zone with it where they can chill out on a beanbag if they need to calm down or a rest.

But it did go down well and I think will be really well used when they remember they have it (in amongst all their other toys).

In terms of independence, its super easy to use except the power button which is a press and hold job. They haven't figured out how to do that themselves yet.

I have a discount code for 10% off everything in your order if it includes a player so let me know if you'd like it.

PinkestMoon · 09/01/2022 09:27

@ByTheSeaCatsandAll that's so helpful, it's impossible to tell without firsthand knowledge! He's got a clock and light so not too bothered about that missing

@Muststopeating that is so kind, I would love it! Thank you so much. I think I'm going to go for the mini player and some cards, no idea what ones but I'll have a browse.

We bought my DD a Yoto last Xmas as she struggled to fall asleep without us lying with her and it has actually been brilliant for transitioning out of that. She uses a mix of the stories and the sleep radio (which is super lovely and I would happily fall asleep to it)
It is pricey but I think worth it and family and friends can buy cards as birthday and Xmas presents.

My 3yo DS has anyone player on his bedside table. Its brilliant. He uses it to listen to a story as he goes to sleep. Theres a great parent app that goes with it so you can control volume, sleep timer and what's playing remotely. When you have got the cards for it you can also play those through your phone so good for sticking on in the car, theres a daily podcast and a radio station too. The customer service has been super, I made a suggestion a while ago about including a sleep timer on the parent app and it has just been included in an update. Yes its it's expensive, but totally worth it in my opinion.

Theres a person I follow on instagram called the.way.we.play and she has just done a load of stories about yoto player so worth having a look for more info.

PinkestMoon · 09/01/2022 09:39

@ByTheSeaCatsandAll does the mini one work as a night light? We're off travelling this year and that would be so useful!

OP posts:
DCINightingale · 09/01/2022 09:40

Oh and yes the record your own cards a lovely and straight forward to use. DH has got quite carried away with his story production and likes to include music and sound effects.

Mehblehfeh · 09/01/2022 09:42

@Muststopeating I have been persuaded to get one for my three year old reading this thread, would love the discount code if that's ok (don't want to steal mushforbrain's one!)

ByTheSeaCatsandAll · 09/01/2022 09:48

@PinkestMoon no it hasn’t got a light feature. But it’s much smaller than the original which might be better for travelling? We got it for the car

PinkestMoon · 09/01/2022 09:51

Any card pack recommendations? I'm considering getting two! One for a 5 year old and one for a 3 year old

Hi, my DD is nearly 5 and what I've noticed is that she will listen to much longer, more complex stories on the Yoto than I would read to her. She loves the Enchanted Wood, the Frozen and Moana audio books (2h+, no music!), Sleepy time stories etc!

I also have a referral code if anyone needs it!

Mehblehfeh · 09/01/2022 10:00

@SuperDuperJezebel yes please I am after a referral code!

@superDuperJezebel thank so much!

Jemimapuddleduk · 09/01/2022 10:12

My ds (7) has the full size and the mini one (for when we stay away/holiday). It’s hands down the most used toy he has. He isn’t too bothered about the stories but loves listening to the music to help him fall asleep at bedtime and if he wakes in the night. His favourite cards are kids bop, Beatles, Forest dreams, ocean dreams, space dreams music. He is autistic and often hard to buy for but this was the best birthday (big yoto) and Christmas (mini) presents he’s ever had.

bluedomino · 09/01/2022 10:13

I'm interested in buying my niece a Yoto but would it work in USA? Could they charge it there and access the radio?

I think they have a US store as well!
