Did anyone used to watch wrestling?

Or perhaps you still do?

I was talking with a friend about '90s nostalgia and we both loved wrestling, WWE or WWF as it was then known.

It was huge at school especially with the boys but I knew more about it than any of them. I remember, perhaps falsely, it being part of thr culture in a way. I'm sure more so in the U.S but I remember seeing wrestlers appearing in tv shows. On merchandise everywhere and then there were things like Celebrity Death Match. Some of the first movies I remember watching featured Hulk Hogan.

Was anyone else a fan?

Have you watched Fighting with my Family? Fantastic film if you love wrestling. I’ve watched it 4 times

I haven't no. Thank you for telling me about it. I'll definitely watch it.

I loved it! From about 99 until the late 2000s. Used to watch it on Sky. Secretly hope DS gets into it when he’s older so I can revisit it all and take him to the arena shows.

Scarby9 · 08/01/2022 20:33

I went to stay with a uni friend's grandma in the mid 1990s.
She was in her late 90s (lived to 102) and would watch the wrestling into the night along with her whiskey nightcap. Also a huge fan of darts!

@Redcrayons

I have really fond memories of Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks on Saturday afternoons with my Nana and Grandad. WWE passed me by, I was probably too old for that.
Me too, watching it with my dad. Jackie Pallo, Kendo Nagasaki, Giant Haystacks and Mick McManus.....
Rogue1001 · 08/01/2022 20:35

Aw! I used to watch it with my dad on Saturday afternoons in the 70s too.

I miss my dad 😔🥀

meteoric · 08/01/2022 20:38

@Lightningrain

My friends and I used to watch in the era of The Rock, Triple H, Stone Cold, Big Show, Undertaker, Chris Jericho, Rikishi and Too Cool, Chyna, Chris Benoit.

I remember having a sleepover at a friend’s house one night watching Royal Rumble in the early hours of the morning.

This brings back such memories - we went to see them all a few times when they came to the UK, it felt so exciting at the time!

I'm still a wrestling nut to this day - no judgements please 😅
I've travelled all over to see WWE and smaller Brit promotions too.
There's something about it for me which is magic. I've been sneered at several times and had the "you know it's fake" comments even more, but I don't care! I love it. I've watched religiously since I was ten years old. It's how my husband first chatted me up aged 17 after seeing I also liked WWE on my my space - 13 years later, 2 kids who are also wrestling nuts, several annual wrestlemania parties later, and it's still a staple of our household.

My most memorable moments -
•Survivor series 2001 when Vince McMahon came out after the show and it was finally the end of the Monday night wars between wwf and wcw, still gives me goosebumps.
•Eddie Guerreros legacy and the effect he had on professional wrestling worldwide.
•Stone cold Steve Austin and the Zamboni.
•Taker throwing cactus jack off the top of hell in a cell
•The formation of Evolution
•Trish stratus retirement match and how absolutely heartbroken I was

Many many more spanning into the modern era!

Crystaldoves · 08/01/2022 20:39

Absolutely loved it. Wwf and wcw was the poor version of it but then they merged if I remember correctly?
I was fully into nitro and had a huge crush on Rey mysterio Jr .
I loved the undertaker and ultimate warrior. I was only about 5 when I started watching it but no way would I let me 5 year old watch it now!

Theunamedcat · 08/01/2022 20:40

Loved it named my cat after a wrestler I became the world's coolest mom at my daughters school after I let that slip at a parents workshop this little boy ran all over the room she knows wrestling! HER CAT IS NAMED AFTER A WRESTLER!

His parents hadn't shown up so he joined in with me and dd I think I cheered him up detailing classic matches telling him how Austin 3.16 came about talking about how mick foley lost an ear etc etc (he knew about the barbed wire matches and the exploding ones in Japan already)

HemanOrSheRa · 08/01/2022 20:40

We used to watch World of Sport on ITV on Saturday afternoons with Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks etc. My Mum LOVED it - lots of booing, hissing and cheering Grin. It was family tradition to have a plate of chitterlings with loads of vinegar and white pepper with bread and butter as a snack!

LadyCleathStuart · 08/01/2022 20:41

I have great memories of my brother and I sitting on a Friday night as young teens watching RAW on Sky Sports. Stone Cold, The Rock, the HHH and Stephanie McMahon story. It was brilliant.

Firesidefox · 08/01/2022 20:45

Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks were the backdrop to my childhood

We properly gasped at Stephanie's turning evil moment Grin

@SortMyHouse

WWF then they changed their name because of wildlife.

Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, The Undertaker his manager Paul Bearer Smile, Macho Man his fiance Elizabeth cringy couple, Jake the Snake, Tornado (committed suicide I think due to a wrestling related disability), Sapphire, Hart Foundation - Brett, Owen, Anvil - loved it. Everyone boys and girls loved it.
The only issue you needed sky to watch it.
My dad's mate used to tape it for us and every Sunday we would go to the Gurdwara, do our studies and then get the tape and come home and watch it. Ready to discuss on Monday at school. Happy times.

In one bedroom we had 2 double beds, we would push the beds together throw the cushions on the sides and me and my siblings would play Royal Rumble. We always let the baby be the winner and had a fake winner's belt.

Happy days.

These are the names I remember from my brother being an avid fan

I love that so many people have fond memories of watching it with their grandparents or parents whether it was British wrestling or WWE.

I hope that those who are current fans get to share it with their children. Fingers crossed that they become fans,

I might have to try going to a smaller local promotion's show. . I've never done that and it should be fun.

Yeah I used to watch it on Saturday afternoons and loved it

PoodleKaboodle · 08/01/2022 21:00

Used to watch it all the time!
I thought Shawn Michaels was the best ❤️

bellamountain · 08/01/2022 21:02

I've been to so many smaller promotions, and the really cool thing is I got to see and meet several wrestlers then, who are now huge names in the WWE. Definitely go and have a look!
ISpyCobraKai · 08/01/2022 21:38

I had a massive crush on Brett Hart back in the day, also Shawn Michaels.
My favourite was Undertaker though.

mintich · 08/01/2022 21:40

Yes I used to watch it in the late 80s/early 90s. Loved Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan etc. I also remember having the sticker books!
It's sad how many of the wrestlers from those days have died prematurely

Obsidiansphere · 08/01/2022 21:43

Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks era here too, but I do remember The Undertaker et al WWF too.

GoodnightGrandma · 08/01/2022 21:43

@Marmelace

It was Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks when last I got a glimpse of it.
Me too !
