Does anyone have a coverless duvet?

I've seen these online and I can't put my finger on why, but they appeal to me. I feel like they would reduce the amount of 'stuff' in the house and also the amount of washing. Although neither of those things make sense as you'd need one plus a spare per person, and you still need to wash it...it just seems less faffy somehow.

Any experience?

This kind of idea

How does it save on washing? Instead of just washing a cover, you have to wash and dry an entire duvet. Can't be very eco when you think of all the microplastics that will be entering the water cycle every week. Plus the water, fuel and detergent needed to wash it. And when you get sick of it, instead of just buying new covers, you need to buy an entire new duvet.

Kpo58 · 08/01/2022 10:38

I'm not sure how washing an entire pillow and duvet each week instead of just thier covers reduces the amount of washing.

I have the solution to less sheets washing. Do it every 4-5 weeks instead of weekly. Nothing bad happens, I promise

Imagine putting in the wash and forgetting to get it out to dry and only realising at bedtime. No, just no. Just limit yourself to two sets of bedding if you're worried about "stuff".

I would think they'd be useful if you had allergies, a child who bed wets or similar situations where you'd need to regularly wash everything, but not under normal circumstances.

This!! Our bed is changed when I can be bothered and we've survived this outrage all these years!!!

Less stuff? Just have one spare set? No need for a mountain of bedding sets then.

DropYourSword · 08/01/2022 10:48

I’ve had things like this before. It’s ok for DC in a single bed. Not so great for Queen/king sized beds. PITA to wash

WarmForDecember · 08/01/2022 11:05

I know it's not logical as it doesn't reduce washing but somehow in my head it seems neater, or something?

I think I'll declutter some of our spare bedding. And don't worry we are very infrequent bedding washers already Grin

I agree with DropTheSword it seems a good idea but only for singles, there is no way we could get a double duvet which we have in our machines. I do see the attraction but yes you would need two really especially for kids with accidents etc

Viviennemary · 08/01/2022 11:15

Not much difference from an old fashioned quilt. And you would probably need 2 per bed. Can't see the king size ones fitting in a normal washing machine.

Evenstar · 08/01/2022 11:38

I have a coverless Superking size one on our bed (summer weight as we get too hot in bed otherwise) it’s fine and fits in our 10kg load washing machine easily. I have just bought 2 single ones for the spare beds and am getting rid of all the bedding apart from sheets and pillowcases.

We would just use the single ones as spares for ours in an emergency, we have adult children so don’t need them that often. I have a blanket for us if we are chilly and will keep one on the end of the guest beds.

NothingTraLaLa · 08/01/2022 11:46

I suspect you would want a flat sheet as well as a fitted sheet. It’s a bit old-fashioned and my DH hates being constrained by tucked-in sheets as he’s very tall and needs his feet to be able to poke out, but you wouldn’t need to wash the quilt as often (unless you have pets that like to sneak onto the bed when you’re not looking).

Oblomov22 · 08/01/2022 12:15

I don't really understand the concept. What's the point. You then weekly wash a duvet and a pillow? Instead of a duvet cover and a pillow cover, which is so much easier?

Hugasauras · 08/01/2022 12:17

Love ours! Our super king fits in normal machine. We have them on all beds now and have converted several guests Grin

Ylfa · 08/01/2022 12:17

It reduces laundry because you use it with a top sheet between you and it.

Grim😳
Hugasauras · 08/01/2022 12:20

And we don't use a flat sheet/top sheet. We just wash them same as we would wash normal sheets, with the added bonus the whole thing gets washed and you don't have to wrestle with duvet covers. They dry super fast too.

TerraNovaTwo · 08/01/2022 12:21

We all have these. Double and singles. My king size duvet felt grotty as I could never fit it in the washing machine for long over due washes. Now I can pop my double coverless straight into the machine whenever. Less linen equals less washing to do, plus it feels cleaner and comfier.

Hugasauras · 08/01/2022 12:22

We have the Night Owl ones for our bed and guest beds, OP, and DD has a rainbow one from Studio or somewhere I think. I think the Night Owl
ones are the nicest. M&S do their own too though,

Hotyogahotchoc · 08/01/2022 12:24

You could try having sheets ie mattress sheet then one below the duvet so you sleep between the sheets and just was the sheets

This would reduce washing on a weekly basis but you'd occasionally have to wash everything

Don't go 4-5 weeks without washing bedding please...

Frazzled2207 · 08/01/2022 12:25

If you got fed up of the pattern- particularly relevant if you had kids- you’d have to buy a whole new set.
And you’d always need a spare which would take up more space than spare covers surely.
Makes far more sense just to have a duvet that you wash rarely and covers that you wash regularly and can mix around whenever you want.

shivbo2014 · 08/01/2022 12:39

I think these are fantastic, I've never heard of them before. These would make everything so much more streamlined and neat. I probably wouldn't bother with the kids beds but for the spare room and my bed I'm getting them.

Snowwhite83 · 08/01/2022 12:56

I love mine from M and S. I absolutely hate putting duvet covers on and off and its so much simpler. Plus any guests who have stayed said it was really comfortable. Cool in summer warm in winter!

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 08/01/2022 13:03

We only have one set of bedding each, it goes in the wash every other week and is back on the bed within a few hours

Ljnew · 21/01/2023 23:09

What tog is yours please?

MissMaple82 · 21/01/2023 23:12

I bought one from Matalan... they are shite!!! Utter shite. Like a really really shit summer sleeping bag
