Interesting stuff!

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59879470

Lots of women were widowed after the First World War.

Several people gave their opinions on divorce.

And I love that one of the census workers complained that children had used the form to play noughts and crosses.

I was very struck by the huge increase in the number of widows. The number of widows rose sharply - from 642,311 in 1911 to more than 1.6m at the start of the 1920s. Sad

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2022 21:26

I think i found my grandmother.
She died before I was born, and I knew she was born early 1920s. Theres a baby listed with her name in the village my dad is from. And some similar aged children that might be some of her siblings.

I might of found my grandfather as well, but its a common first and last name combination I'm less certain.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/01/2022 21:48

I looked up my grandmother. Found her, but somehow I paid £2.50 to view the census for each entry.

Was looking forward to looking up other relatives. Not at £2.50 a go though. Is there a better way of looking at the census.

Clawdy · 06/01/2022 22:21

Years ago as soon as the census was published, you could access it online for free. So annoying. And even Ancestry hasn't got access to it yet. Only free access if you live in London, and can pop in to see the records!

Tuliprain · 06/01/2022 22:23

When I look up the census I can see names and sometimes birth and death dates. If you pay what extra can you find out? I’d quite like to look up the 2021 census

Or Manchester, Central Library also has free access to it.

You can't view the 2021 census for 100 years.
Tuliprain · 06/01/2022 22:35

Sorry I mean the 1921 census.

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20s-people/the-1921-census/where-can-i-access-the-1921-census/

This has some more info about where and how to access the census records

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/01/2022 09:57

When I looked up my grandmother I could see a digital entry of her name and age. Also her siblings name and age and her mother. The fact they had lost their father. He died in WW1 but it doesn’t say that. Also the name of their maid and where she came from and her age.

Nice to see it in the census, but I didn’t learn anything new. (Apart from the name of their maid)

NC1602 · 07/01/2022 10:36

Found my great grandmother too who disappears after the birth of my grandmother later in the 30s. Agree with @DobbyTheHouseElk that I didnt find anything new though. Can't afford £3.50 a pop for every household in my family tree though so that's probably it for me for now. Any idea if it will be free to view online in the future or do we reckon not now that FindMyPast is the lead on this one?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/01/2022 10:56

I hope that there will be a one off fee to view more of the census. I wanted to search for my Grandfather as well. I mistakenly thought the £2.50 would have bought me a bit more information.

I wanted to see if I could search who was living in my house at that time.

Tomeeornottomee · 07/01/2022 11:03

I read somewhere that FMP has exclusivity for 3 years! I looked at getting a sub for there but it’s v expensive and you still have to pay extra to access the 1921 census

SpookyScarySkeletons · 07/01/2022 11:07

Thanks to you lot I have now fallen down the rabbit hole of ancestry and have paid a fortune for an annual subscription to do my entire family tree.

If DH comments on the £119 PayPal payment I'm blaming you lot 😂😂

God it's so flipping interesting though!! Might soften the blow and say I'll add his in too.

NC1602 · 07/01/2022 11:19

@Tomeeornottomee yeah it's so expensive and then just a 10% discount for the census.. I'm sure it costs a lot to transcribe and they want to make it worth their while but its still too much money for me to justify it per record.

I took advantage of my library's free access during the first lockdown to do as much as I could.. so not worth subscribing now and then still having to pay a lot to view records.

3 years though! Gosh! And I'm even more sad that there's no more census now until for like 30 years!

Twitchynose · 07/01/2022 12:11

Is it just me that feels a bit uncomfortable about census information being released after 100 years given the life expectancy nowadays? Probably just me, but as it’s very personal information that we are legally obliged to reveal and the amount and depth of data collected each time seems to increase it, it feels too soon to me.

BlibBlabBlob · 07/01/2022 13:20

Personally I think 100 years is OK, any less might not be so good though.

I've just blown £3.50 I didn't have to get the record for my grandmother who was a primary-aged child at the time. It's nice to have a scan of the original record and it's fascinating to see that the family was living with with her grandfather at the time and there was apparently some debate between grandfather and father (i.e. my great great grandfather and great grandfather) over who was the 'head' of the family and thus got to sign off the form!

NiceBracelet · 07/01/2022 13:24

I must admit I’m quite disappointed by the way the 1921 census has been rolled out. I’ve pretty much gone as far as I can with my tree so now I only occasionally subscribe to ancestry sites and when I do I use ancestry, where I can pay one month at a time because that’s all I need - last time I looked, FMP didn’t have that option. Also, I wouldn’t be happy paying a subscription and then paying again to view the census.
So I’m going to wait out the 3 years, with the occasional trip to Manchester library.

MadisonAvenue · 07/01/2022 13:28

Do FMP ever have free access days/weekends like (I think?) Ancestry do?

FMP does offer a monthly option, for between £10 and £16, I was looking at it earlier. Haven't decided whether to bother yet though, given it only gets you a piddly discount on the 1921 census
Tuliprain · 07/01/2022 13:32

I’ve paid £2.50 to view a file but only half the family were in the house at the time. I want to find out why and where the rest were but can’t justify spending more money.

BestIsWest · 07/01/2022 13:32

They do have free offers but given that even if you have a subscription you still have to pay for each census view I can’t see them allowing free access to it.
I understand they need to recoup costs but I wish they at least did bundles - eg 10 lookups for £30 instead of £3.50 a pop.

playmelikeasymphony · 07/01/2022 13:36

FMP does have a month option @NiceBracelet, I just considered it. But it tries to make you do a year

ShowOfHands · 07/01/2022 13:41

I've been researching my tree for years on Ancestry and some other sites and have pretty comprehensive records back to the 18th, 17th and, sometimes, 16th centuries. I have at least 35 families I want to find on the 1921 census and it's too expensive as is. I'll have to wait for Ancestry to have access. It's very frustrating. I might have to check out a couple of families in advance as I'm missing a puzzle piece. It'll be 30 yrs until I can do the next census check after all!

BestIsWest · 07/01/2022 14:01

Me too, so frustrating. I’m trying to restrict myself to my four grandparents but there are so many more I want to look up.
