What are you saving FOR?

Inspired by another thread!

For those who save regularly, what are you saving for?

For me, it's partly to pay off the mortgage (one day, a long, long way into the future!) and partly for my DS' first car and driving lessons in a couple of years.

I was saving for early retirement because I don't keep well but not well enough to get any financial assistance. I will probably get some when I'm too far gone to be able to do anything with it though. Given DP was made redundant I (not him, me) has too much in savings for him to get any unemployment benefit. Seriously considering punting him out the house to keep my hard earned dosh :)

mibbelucieachwell · 06/01/2022 23:04

Essential home repairs
A car. My current one is 11.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/01/2022 23:32

Anything and everything. We’ve always “paid ourselves first” and have a significant sum in savings. But, we live offshore, will not be retiring here (one of the most expensive countries in the world), so for us it makes sense to save and invest.
Could end up as a 20% deposit on a new home, could pay for renovations in the current home, could pay for emergency healthcare for family back in UK, could pay for many, many, many holidays.
I prefer the security of savings and we currently have nothing we’re actively going to spend it on.

Enzbear · 06/01/2022 23:36

Early retirement with loads of holidays.

Holothane · 06/01/2022 23:37

To leave .

PegasusReturns · 06/01/2022 23:38

Long term security for my DC and their potential DC

FinallyFluid · 06/01/2022 23:47

Mortgage gone about five years.

Dh retires this year.

£35 k in the emergency fund.

Further savings post tax of about £130,000

The further savings is to fund home improvements and long holidays in Spain, with multiple books and view of the sea, too old to buy, so we are going to start ramping up to a month, then six weeks, then two months yada, yada, yada....

Long.................. time coming, DH worked away Monday to Friday for all of our married life.

The odd time he was was working for a UK bank and up in the city it felt almost normal. Grin

We also plan to help DS with a contribution towards a deposit.

Also possible inheritance.

For when something like the washing machine or fridge breaks.
For when/if I need to take sick leave from work (can't survive on SSP and don't get paid sick leave)
Christmas/birthdays

Very, very modest savings (compared to some) that periodically get wiped out by one (or all!) Of the above. I can't afford to save very much but so far (since I serviced some debts and started saving the money instead) it's been enough to not get into debt again replacing items like the washing machine when it broke and when I got injured and needed two weeks off work which meant I could actually do it and recover.
I'm hoping to double what I have without disaster striking so I can sort a carpet for the stairs and still have a buffer.

AffIt · 07/01/2022 00:14

All debts including mortgage paid off, so everything is all about frantically saving now - both high (6 figures) earners.

Short-term (2 years) = large deposit on a new car, ideally a Mazda MX30 or a BMWi30.

Mid-term (3-5 years) = a new house with land, so that we can move out of the city.

Long-term (10-15 years) = pensions, so that we can retire at 55.

JeffThePilot · 07/01/2022 00:27

At the moment not saving very much, but it would be for:

New sofa
Kitchen floor
Redo garden
Overpay mortgage/retirement

Kitkat151 · 07/01/2022 01:41

@cptartapp

Early retirement from NHS/ to top up my pension, will defo be going at 55. Inheritance invested for the same reason.
This is me ....although I’m now 57! I’m going to go this year
MrsTimRiggins · 07/01/2022 05:35

I have three savings pots, one for our son (£100/month), one for ‘just in case’ costs (£150/month) and everything else goes into saving for a new premises for our business, not cheap!

Gingerlovesbiscuits · 07/01/2022 06:00

I have a few different savings pots…

1 - Christmas and birthdays
2 - Our holiday cottage for the summer
3 - Kids car / driving lessons
4 - Kids university feed
5 - Retirement
6 - Emergency fund which we dipped into recently so needs topping up

  • Getting married (not having an expensive wedding but it's still a lot of money for us to find)
  • Moving on to a bigger house (in a few years)
IDKAYBIF32 · 07/01/2022 06:51

A house deposit.

Have £3000 in an account for an emergency fund which will stay there unless I really need it.

Also put £100 a month away for a rainy day fund for things like car insurance, MOT, service, tyres etc, have £700 in there atm.

copernicium · 07/01/2022 06:52

I do a big house job every year or two...this year is a kitchen Smile plus always have enough in case of illness or payment issues as I'm self employed.

QuiltedHippo · 07/01/2022 06:58

Lots, but nothing concrete like a pony sadly. I have a lot of pots. Few on hold as I'm on mat leave

  1. Investments for early retirement
  2. Mortgage overpayments
  3. Sinking fund for car expenses
  4. Holidays
  5. Home repairs/upkeep/replacing white goods
  6. Emergency/fuck off fund
  7. DDs pension
  8. DDs general saving
  9. Christmas
OhGiveUp · 07/01/2022 08:07

Comfort.

Frannibananni · 07/01/2022 08:41

School fees, a tractor, then just to replace things we own when they break, Retirement.

Ilikewinter · 07/01/2022 09:55

Wow all great ideas and a lot that are very popular.
Ive no idea what im saving for, used to be for holidays but weve now got a puppy so long haul travel doesnt interest me at the minute.
I already pay into my pension pot and over pay the mortgage so dont really see these as savings as its done automatically.
I dont need or want a new car and the house is generally ok.
Havent really gone out anywhere so no need for clothes, bags and shoes.
I suppose i have a 'want it see it buy it fund!'
Quite sad really!

user5656555 · 07/01/2022 09:56

Holidays. Always holidays.

purplesequins · 07/01/2022 09:57

pinkgin85 · 07/01/2022 09:59

I'm saving for an extension/renovation and DH saving for our retirement and another savings account for the kids futures.

babouchette · 07/01/2022 10:04

At the moment, maternity leave!

Longer term, a new kitchen. It's probably about three or four years away.
