What are you saving FOR?

Inspired by another thread!

For those who save regularly, what are you saving for?

For me, it's partly to pay off the mortgage (one day, a long, long way into the future!) and partly for my DS' first car and driving lessons in a couple of years.

@MsRinky

Retirement and fuck-off-fund. Will never be in a position where if it's necessary for me to tell either my job or my husband to fuck off, that I don't because I can't afford it. Luckily I adore them both, but how much is knowing I could go any time contributes to that, who knows?
I had a fuck-off-fund a while back. And the bank system asked for a name for the savings account, so I named it for what it was. Almost got my whole account suspended. Now it has the boring name of savings account3. I liked the other better.....

Because life is completely unpredictable, except for Christmas and taxes..

Because I saw the nursing home that was considered suitable for my mother. Luckily her needs were so complex that she had to go to a specialist centre that is much better, but since then my overriding aim has been to avoid going somewhere like that. I won't manage to put enough money together but it's worth trying. My plan A is to die earlier but that's only a possibility.

House Refurb when we eventually move in. Holidays when we can go unobstructed. Finally to repay the mortgage at the end of our fixed term then it'll be for retirement.

HairyToity · 06/01/2022 21:57

Not the least bit bothered about working past retirement age. Not bothered about holidays either. Happy for a few nights away in the UK each year.

Saving for home renovations, a rainy day buffer, and not telling the kids this, but would like some savings, in case they ever need a helping hand. If they knew the money was saved for them, they'd spend it. We'll call it a secret emergency fund.

A BTL to provide retirement income so I can reduce hours when my 10 yr older OH retires.

febreezy · 06/01/2022 21:59

Short term : NYC woth kids for Christmas.
Long term: education

Suzi888 · 06/01/2022 22:00

For my child, driving lessons, car, house deposit.
For my retirement.
For Lapland (hopefully).

I also need a new car come to think of it, but not saving for that.

febreezy · 06/01/2022 22:00

Also
...
I am
A teacher so I pay a huge amount into my pension weekly
from my salary.
Long term I guess but gov do the job for
Me.

ANameChangeAgain · 06/01/2022 22:02

Interesting reading everyone else's, we are all similar really.
We had a double income no kids decade, which set us up well house wise. The mortgage is pretty much paid off.
The savings account that gets the child benefit paid into it earmarked for the children and is being saved for 1st cars and / or university.
The main savings we haven't decided. Potentially a future holiday cottage pot, may be a home extension.

Pinchofnom · 06/01/2022 22:02

To retire as early as possible and to be able to pay the deposit of my dd’s first place and support her through college.

Shmithecat2 · 06/01/2022 22:03

House renovation.

Sideswiped · 06/01/2022 22:04

My retirement- I may well be looking at retiring before my work pension kicks in (ill health).
So I will be reliant on my state pension, when it kicks in, plus any other benefits I
might be able to claim. It's not great, whichever way I look at it. Sad

febreezy · 06/01/2022 22:06

My kids will pay for their own driving lessons/ Car/ tax/ insurance. Part time jobs .
I'll sell up, divide profit of home between them so they will
Have a living will and I will
be able to sell property No hassle when I'm
DeAd and I'll happily rent to my death . No hassle with kids or partner or any such nonsense.

Ragwort · 06/01/2022 22:09

Habit, security really ... mortgage is paid off, have a fairly decent pension fund ... and although I am nearing retirement age I have no plans to retire early, although my DH is planning to in a few months time.

I just quite like the security of knowing I don't need to worry if we get an unexpected bill etc.

popcorndiva · 06/01/2022 22:09

Ear marked half our savings for a garage converson/extension we are getting done this year.

Rest of my savings I need for a new car in a year or so plus I want to redo my ensuite at some point.

Tay17 · 06/01/2022 22:13

To emigrate!

CharlotteRose90 · 06/01/2022 22:15

My first house and a new car

Also have a savings account for holidays as I’d to travel the world.

And a savings account for retirement

Jayaywhynot · 06/01/2022 22:18

Boring but I'm saving for my retirement, 10 yrs to go so I'm putting as much away as I can.
Got made redundant, have a new job but redundancy screwed my pension

Kitchen
Cellar (tanking and bathroom)
Loft conversion

Alysskea · 06/01/2022 22:22

I save in case things go to pot. I've had the rug pulled out from under me before and only didn't end up homeless cos of my savings so that motivated me to keep going. So it's not really 'for' anything - it's for the unknown!!

TheDoctorDances · 06/01/2022 22:26

I too have one of these. I’m perfectly happy, but if one day we break up I will be able to buy him out.
Racingadmin · 06/01/2022 22:38

1-max contribution into Lisa as that's my pension

2 - this year's 2 planned holidays

3- long terms stocks and shares regular savings for retirement campervan

Mortgage paid off 4 years ago and Dh salary covers all bills and dc uni contributions so priorities are different now.

Eileen101 · 06/01/2022 22:44

For in case the shit hits the fan.
For a holiday fund for more expensive holidays - we're in our last 9 months of term time holidays.
For early retirement and selling up to move to the country.
For the children's future for whatever - house deposit / driving / studying etc
