If you have bad eyesight do you take your glasses with you when wearing contacts?

I have very bad eyesight (-11) both eyes and always wear contacts when I leave the house. I also always carry my glasses with me whenever I go out in case I need to take a lens out for some reason. I usually wear hard lenses, which are more susceptible to grit etc if it's windy.
DH gets really annoyed because it means I always need to take a bag for activities where he would just take stuff in his pockets. I'm terrified of being stranded somewhere because I can't see. Wouldn't be able to drive home or even cross a road safely. Am I the only person who does this? Or is it something everyone with bad eyesight does?

I always take my glasses with me if I'm out of the house any length of time. Also take the lens case with fluid in. If I get tired my lenses dry out so either I need to give them a rinse or switch to glasses.

DillDanding · 06/01/2022 11:29

I wear daily disposables. My prescription is -2.75 , which is bad enough that I can’t see a thing at even a short distance without them.

I never take out spares and I don’t even have any glasses. This has made me think I really should put some spares in my car.

anilluminatednewyearforme · 06/01/2022 11:30

I'm -5 and I usually wear glasses, but I always have a spare old pair in the car and a set of contact lenses in my bag (I always have my bag!)

I can't drive without glasses or lenses, because I really cannot see well at all! If not leave the house without back up if I was -11, sod what DH thinks!

Mine are -10 and it’s never occurred to me to do this but I probably should! I do wear soft lenses and could probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve had to remove them for discomfort reasons in the 20 years I’ve worn them

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 06/01/2022 12:26

Back when I was allowed contact lenses I did yes, nothing more scary than the idea of being stranded somewhere unable to see. Now the opticians refuse to prescribe me contact lenses so I have a spare of glasses in my car just in case.

irregularegular · 06/01/2022 12:35

I'm -5. I wear contact lenses all the time and glasses are only for "emergencies". I certainly always take glasses with me if I am going away on a trip, as well as spare contact lenses.

I don't take them with me otherwise. It hadn't really occurred to me but I can see it would be a good idea. Just going for a walk I would manage without. Driving certainly would be impossible. Maybe I will put a spare pair of lenses in the car and in my handbag. That's not a bad plan. And easier than keeping my one and only pair of glasses there.

I have 3 pairs of cheap reading glasses, which I wear on top of my lenses. Work, home and handbag. But that's another story.

Champagneforeveryone · 06/01/2022 12:57

I'm not sure what my actual prescription is but I'm -5.5 in lenses and would really struggle without them (and certainly couldn't drive) However I only carry my glasses if I'm going away, which is ridiculous really Hmm

DixieSun · 06/01/2022 13:03

Unless he's carrying the bag what's it got to do with him?

BurbageBrook · 06/01/2022 13:09

Is he normally controlling about minor things which have nothing to do with him?

Purpletomato · 06/01/2022 13:10

-8 and I wear soft daily disposables. I always have a spare pair of them in my bag in case of emergency, I wouldn't even be able to cross the road without my lenses.

Also, whenever I get a new pair of glasses I keep the previous pair for temporary use if I break the new set.

makeadifference · 06/01/2022 13:14

I have a spare pair of contacts with me most of the time unless I'm just popping out somewhere local and/or haven't driven myself there.

I bring glasses with me for longer/further away days out as I like the option of knowing I could take my contacts out if rain gets in them or if they start to bother me.

I once had to take my lenses out on a walk, luckily I wasn't alone and hadn't driven there and I really struggled to observe my surroundings and felt really vulnerable. I'm -3.5.

Eminybob · 06/01/2022 13:18

I’m -8 and really should take either spare contacts or glasses with me but I don’t.
It does occur to me every now and then that I should. Luckily I’ve not been in a position where it’s been a problem up until now.
I think you have inspired me to keep a spare set of contacts in the car!

Fluenty · 06/01/2022 13:25

If I’m going to be out 12+ hours I may take them in case my eyes start to get uncomfortable so I have the option,
And if I was travelling more than an hour from home I’d take them I think.
But typically no, and not really if I’m with DH. I would trust him to keep me safe, get me home etc. on the rare occassion when I had to take my lens out. - surely it’s not happening that often?!

wombatsandstuff · 06/01/2022 13:32

My prescription is only about -3 but I still have a spare pair of glasses in my car just in case. And I always wear glasses, though I’m trialling contacts tomorrow.

Change123today · 06/01/2022 13:34

I have a cheap pair I brought always in the car just in case. If I’m going away then take a pair with me, if I’m just going out for an afternoon I wouldn’t take a spare pair.

PineConeWar · 06/01/2022 13:35

I always end up carrying stuff for the DC too. I don't expect any have never asked him to carry a bag or anything for me. We're going skiing on Sat and I said I wouldn't be taking a big bag as I'm not taking the camera and he reckons it's ridiculous to take a bag at all.

My eyesight isn't that bad and I only wear contact lenses occasionally but I often take my glasses too, particularly if I'm driving.

JenniferWooley · 06/01/2022 13:37

My prescription is +6.5 in both eyes & I always take specs out if wearing lenses after the time I lost a lens & had to drive home wearing DD's specs as she was same prescription the my little pony specs were a definite fashion statement I can't go for a wee in the middle of the night without my specs so no chance I'd be able to make it home if I lost a lens and had no specs!

hannahbeth · 06/01/2022 13:37

Why on earth would that annoy him?

Harrysmummy246 · 06/01/2022 13:41

Always spare lenses after some uncomfortable moments lately- I'm a gardener so grit is a very common issue. I'm going to start keeping my specs in the car to change at the end of the day though. Or if, I rub some sort of grot into my eye, again, and it's red and sore, again....

Harrysmummy246 · 06/01/2022 13:42

@Change123today

I have a cheap pair I brought always in the car just in case. If I’m going away then take a pair with me, if I’m just going out for an afternoon I wouldn’t take a spare pair.
Sadly they're never a cheap pair with OP prescription.... (DH is similar)
Foxyloxy1plus1 · 06/01/2022 13:42

Even if you have soft lenses, things can happen to them. They can slide and get stuck, or they become uncomfortable after prolonged wearing.

I used to keep a lens case and a small bottle of cleanser with me (monthly ones) and always had my glasses with me too.

Frlrlrubert · 06/01/2022 13:43

I mostly wear glasses now anyway, but when I wore lenses (soft, +6) I carried spares and glasses for work or trips further than the shops if I was alone just in case. Don't think I ever needed them, but better safe than sorry.

You DH is in a privileged position of being healthy enough to not need anything requiring a bag.

I'd probably try to find a pair of glasses with a hard case small enough for a big pocket for sports activities if I could (I don't ski, so have no idea about what pockets are like on ski clothes - I know I can fit a pair in the inside pocket of my walking coat), but with kids I'd probably end up taking a bag anyway!

icebearforpresident · 06/01/2022 13:45

I usually have a pair of disposables in my bag or pocket but only if I’m away from home, if I’m near the house I don’t bother. If you wear hard lenses I assume you don’t have spares you could carry with you in a pocket?

The only time they’ve ever been used was at a wedding when my friend lost his lens, his prescription was close enough to mine that he stole one of my spares to get through the rest of the day.

Mol1628 · 06/01/2022 13:45

I’m -8 and take glasses if I’m going to be out for most of the day or driving any distance. Just seems sensible really.
