Kindle vs kindle app on phone?

Yebbie · 06/01/2022 00:08

Read on my phone most nights but always end up replying to a WhatsApp or scrolling mumsnet instead (like right now)

Want to buy a kindle so I can have my phone turned off at night and left on dresser and not by bed. Also thought will help to generally reduce my screen time a bit as I'm on my phone way too much

Dh saying huge waste of money as can use kindle app on phone like I already do? I have a £50 Amazon gift card so if I get the basic kindle it's only costing me £19 and seems worth it. We already pay for kindle unlimited

Is it worth it? Is the basic kindle crap and better to go straight to paper white also? Help please!

Get a kindle. It's a million times better than reading on your phone.

bruffin · 06/01/2022 08:07

Much prefer paperwhite than Kindle app on the phone.

WotNoLoobrush · 06/01/2022 08:52

@ExtremelyDetermined

I'd have to disagree, I have a paperwhite and hardly every use it, I much prefer my phone. It's easier to hold and swipe (I'm a fast reader too), you can adjust the brightness at a touch, I have it on Do Not Disturb at bedtime anyway so no interruptions. Never sit in bright sunlight to read although I concede that is an issue. I can go weeks without using the actual kindle but use the app all the time.
Exactly.

You can make the same adjustments on the app. 'Do not disturb' is invaluable and I use dark mode, saving power and minimizing disturbance to partner. Unless I were to regularly read in bright sunlight, I can't justify buying an extra device.

I have the paperwhite and it's much nicer to read on that than the phone. Definitely kinder on the eyes.

Stylemyhairplease · 06/01/2022 08:56

The only downside of the kindle for me is that I can't use the BorrowBox library app.

burnoutbabe · 06/01/2022 09:04

I do have a backlit kindle but not used it for years.

I use my kindle app loads on my iPhone. On trains /tubes.

But I have been getting more and more books from the library, either actual books or via the Libby app. And that's on my phone.

So I'd probably not spend £100 on another item when your phone does it anyway.

fruitpastille · 06/01/2022 09:05

I love my kindle. Mine is an older paperwhite but dd has the newer basic one and there is barely any difference. I have a lovely case (brand is fintie I think) so it opens and closes like a book (this also turns it on and off). The brightness can be adjusted just as easily as on a phone. I read under the covers at night time with the brightness quite low. You can read it with the light turned off in daylight. The battery lasts weeks especially if you keep it on airplane mode (top tip is to pay the extra ten quid not to have any adverts on it too). It's great for holidays, especially camping for reading at night. You can still use the app on your phone if you are out and about and want to read a few pages when you don't have the kindle with you. Just buy one Grin

BertieBotts · 06/01/2022 09:13

The e-ink screen is totally different to reading on a phone. You don't need to be able to change the background colour (you can change font and text size) because it feels like reading paper. You don't get that slightly frantic overstimulated feeling like from staring at a phone screen.

Your reasoning makes sense and if it's your own money then do what you like! Don't listen to DH.

Amazon are really good/easy with returns as well so if you don't get on with it you can always just send it back.

toastofthetown · 06/01/2022 09:14

I think this thread shows how personal it is. I hate reading on my phone screen. Reading on my Kindle is a totally different experience, and worth the price for me. Can’t comment on the recent models though - I’m on a ten year old version which predates the Paperwhite! Would it be worth trying to see them in person somewhere, I believe John Lewis sells Kindles.

grey12 · 06/01/2022 09:16

I have a paperwhite. It's a joy to read from Smile much better than reading on the phone. It was a gift from work colleagues because they saw me always reading on my phone during the lunch break Grin

The backlight is good for me. But if it's not enough, I've seen those little lights you can use that grip onto the kindle. So that's an option

Kangaruby · 06/01/2022 09:20

I love my kindle much prefer to the app. Just get it, don't really see what is has got to do with your dh ( unless you are both broke) if you want it just get it especially if its only going to cost you £19

SoupDragon · 06/01/2022 09:22

Kindle beats a phone/iPad screen IMO.

The app is great for reading when you're stuck somewhere without your Kindle though - it's great to be able to pick up your book wherever you are.

SoupDragon · 06/01/2022 09:25

I have a Paperwhite but it's an old Paperwhite so I don't know how the current versions compare.

ExtremelyDetermined · 06/01/2022 09:46

I actually prefer the feel of reading off the phone screen to the kindle itself, it's crisper and clearer, the kindle screen seems sort of dull by comparison. definitely no eye-strain or similar for me from the phone. I have the font fairly small so I get plenty of text per page too.

However, I find the kindle very useful when travelling because of the long battery life. It's too bulky to carry around day to day but I do take it on holiday. It is useful to have when my phone is flat, as it sometimes is by bedtime, I use the kindle then so I don't have to lie in bed with my phone plugged into the charger. So overall I'm glad I have it and would miss it if it broke, but it's not an essential in my life.

HilaryBriss · 06/01/2022 09:48

I'm another one who much prefers my Kindle to reading on my phone. Even on a train I would take my Kindle with me rather than try and read on the app on my phone.

My Kindle is pretty essential and one of the few things that would need to be replaced immediately if I ever lost or broke it!

reluctantbrit · 06/01/2022 09:50

I have a paperwhite and while I use the phone app once in a while it definitely. doesn't replace the actual. kindle.

The screen is better, no glaring, the phone one is too small and I don't get distracted with messages, emails or calls.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 06/01/2022 09:52

I have the basic kindle (this is actually my 4th in 10 years after 1st broke, 2nd got sat on and 3rd got pinched by dd). The basic one has a backlight, and is easy to read in the dark. I much prefer it to reading on my phone.

kylie122 · 06/01/2022 09:59

Get the kindle its sooo good please it doesn't hurt your eyes it's not the same screen it's like the actual papers

onedayoranother · 06/01/2022 10:01

Absolutely.
I have a full size kindle and while I can read Mumsnet and emails on my phone I don't want to read a book. Plus wouldn't a kindle app eat your storage? And isn't the technology behind how the kindle is lit much better for your eyes?

Wellhungdonkey · 06/01/2022 10:11

Can you turn your phone on to airplane mode? You can use it but you won’t receive any notifications.

Footle · 06/01/2022 10:41

I spent about a fiver on a stretchy strap that sticks on to the back o my kindle so I can hold it very easily. I have some arthritis in my hands and this really helps.

KatharinaRosalie · 06/01/2022 10:44

I hate reading on my phone or tablet but Kindle (I have Oasis) is something else entirely, the screen is like paper. Just with light so you can read in dark. Your DH is wrong.

Oldandcobwebby · 06/01/2022 10:48

Having tried both, I would highly recommend having a proper Kindle. There really is no comparison, e-ink is so much easier on the eyes, and the whole experience is more book-like. I progressed from an early Paperwhite (now being used by my daughter who is a less avid reader than me) to an Oasis. I found the Oasis was much more evenly lit. However, the new Paperwhites have excellent reviews, so I am probably a bit behind the times, as usual!

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/01/2022 10:51

I use a kobo Clara so I can borrow library books for free and it’s much better than a kindle app.

I love it.

Mapletreelane · 06/01/2022 10:52

Kindle all the way!

I rarely read on my phone . The kindle is so superior where do I even start. Matt screen, so much kinder on the eyes, less harsh glare on eyes.

And means I put my phone down, especially at night in bed.
