What do you do with the wee?!

Toilet training my 2 year old. He's fairly good, but I'm struggling a bit when we are out and about. I keep a potty in the boot of the car, but I'm wondering what to do with the wee when he's used it.

I want to buy a travel potty, where the lid seals the wee inside until you get home. My husband says just chuck it in a hedge/down a drain. This is fine if we're out somewhere like a wood, where no one will notice, but not so fine on the school run, where we park and walk in housing estates etc.

Husband says just take a large Tupperware box to tip the wee into for these occasions. I think a proper travel potty would really help.

What does everyone else do?

Potty liners are great- plastic bags with like a lining at the bottom,
Similar to a nappy or sanitary towel.

Or I used a cheap brand nappy as a liner to the potty. Worked a treat. We also had the travel potty that double as a toilet seat

Potette

The bags have an absorbent pad that soaks up the wee & tie handles. The frame can also be folded flat to make a smaller loo seat as required.

We still have ours in the boot of our car even though DD are 11 & 15 (& I'm 48) as we found it very hand when stuck on in a massive traffic jam on the motorway when the youngest was 3! Can be used in slow moving traffic (in the dark) by a grown woman if necessary.

Ime of ds's (8) teach your ds to aim and wee in a bush or behind the car - a great skill to master...

Yep, potette for poos, just tie up the bag and go. Wees - hedge usually, as we’re rural, or public toilet if in town.

Travel potty. Sure, some kids ‘get’ potty training in a week and never need to wee outside the house ever again. Others take a bit longer and staying at home for months on end isn’t practical. I keep it in the back of the car for longer journeys and pop it in the buggy if we are going to the park (might be out for 2 hours by the time we’ve walked there and back and no loos). In the first few months it got a lot of use; 7 months in only a few times a month. Note, I am not advocating getting the potty out in a restaurant or shop.

They are expensive but they are convenient.

alisonsattic · 04/01/2022 23:44

Never used a travel potty, or took one with us. We picked a week to do potty training that was planned in advance that we knew we didn't have to be anywhere.
By the end of the week they had almost got it. When we did go out we make sure they went before we left and they managed to hold it in during the short excursion.

If you are going through all the faff of bringing a potty with you on an excursion, well honestly? Your child isn't ready to be toilet trained.

Mine used to wee into a jar or a bottle. Screw lid on. Dispose later. Job done

BleuJay · 04/01/2022 23:54

My mother never took a potty out for us and neither did I for mine!

We had to go to the bathroom before we went out and that’s what I did with mine.

The funny thing is that my father is in his 80s and he still says asks me to go to bathroom before I leave his!

toddybell · 04/01/2022 23:56

As others, toilet trip before leaving the home and once again when back. The rest of the time, weeing down an alleyway/tree/hedge (at the park for example) but I always carry a big water bottle with me so would wash down any walls, etc. once dc was finished.

LakeFlyPie · 04/01/2022 23:57

We bypassed the potty, it seemed like unnecessary hassle!
2 DSs peed in bushes or down drains if in built up area. At home we had 'family' toilet seats that have a smaller seat that folded down inside the normal one.

Sally872 · 05/01/2022 00:02

We didn't carry a potty around. Very occasional pee outside if unavoidable, an accident once or twice but generally taking them to toilet before leaving then routinely when out and about until the could reliably tell us with some notice.

AutisticLegoLover · 05/01/2022 00:06

I have a school run friend who just lets her year 1 (6 year old) just pee anywhere. Need a wee on the footpath from school, no problem just face a tree and go dear, ignore the parents and children walking past. Need to go at the bus stop on the main road, just go five paces away from the queue and pee on the gatepost of that house. I make ds wait 5 minutes until we get to the woods where no one needs to witness it and he won't be worried about anyone seeing. I wonder what the poor boy does on school trips around the local area when he would have to wait a few minutes? Some cultures are more of a wild wee culture than others I've been told but a child of 6 should be able to wait until they get to a place of relative privacy surely? Additional needs aside.

Menmy3 · 05/01/2022 00:10

My poor kids have spent their entire lives been shoved in bushes and held over grates 🤣

Wheredidthequietgo · 05/01/2022 00:24

We only ever took a potty and loo roll if it was a long journey. Soaked wee up with toilet roll and flushed/binned at earliest opportunity

RedCandyApple · 05/01/2022 00:29

I never used a travel potty didn’t realise so many did!

Hairyfriend · 05/01/2022 00:32

If its mainly for urine, I recently saw a toddler using something like the 1st image in the attachment. It was discreet, and covered the genitals. I did a double take, as thought it was a water bottle and seemed like an odd place to have it!

Training to be. Hermes delivery driver Teach them to throw them onto the verge as well

I have two boys. Never travelled with a potty, but after getting stuck in a city centre traffic jam for over an hour, the 'wee bottle' was born. Get a decent sized bottle with a hole they can poke their willies into and screw the lid on afterwards. No mess, no fuss and easy to pour away and wash afterwards. Cheap and recyclable too. Ours lived in the car for years (washed!).

I didn’t use a potty with any of mine, at home or out. And I can count on one hand (ok, maybe two) the amount of times they did a wee in a bush at the side of the road or in the park. As a few other posters have said, if this is a frequent issue, then perhaps they aren’t quite ready yet. I guess k toilet trained my kids quite late by other people’s standards (about to turn 3) but it was over and done in a weekend with very few accidents.

Laserbird16 · 05/01/2022 03:42

A bush wee, luckily no poos but I do carry spare undies and wipes if needed.

Oh nonsense. We used a travel potty for 2 years for long walks, parks and playgrounds etc. Not every child can hold their wee for hours or wee outside without getting their trousers wet.

I wasn’t going to stay inside or not toilet train my child for 2 years 🙄

Giggorata · 05/01/2022 03:58

If my DC were desperate and we couldn't find a shop or public loo, they would go discreetly behind a bush, tree or in a drain.
It's only pee, not nitric acid.
All these pads and bags can't be good for the environment.

KloppsTeeth · 05/01/2022 04:09

No wonder the planet is fucked with all these wees being bagged up in plastic bags.
