Is it ok for teen dd to wear a sports bra everyday?

Dd (almost 15) has asd and find regular bras uncomfortable. She’s been wearing sports bras from primark but has asked to try regular bras again. After an unsuccessful trip to m&s she’s said she’d like to stick to sports bras after all.

Are sports bras really ok for her to wear everyday? I can’t put my finger on why she shouldn’t…maybe because they aren’t good for her developing breasts? Dd argued that they’re MORE supportive than bras and I didn’t have an answer for that! Are they too restrictive?

Any advice would be appreciated 😊.

I suppose it depends on what level of sports bra, one for yoga doesn't really compress anything whereas one for high impact sports does, I'd probably avoid the high impact one for everyday.

Also are the proper sports bras or the crop tops that Primark sell. DD likes the crop top ones and they don't compress at all.

Your Dd might prefer a bralette as a combo between the two, Hollister sell non-lacy ones I think of lace texture is an issue.

I’m autistic and only wore sports bras - I’m in my 40s now, no harm appears to be done.

I liked that they didn’t shift around, my boobs didn’t move, the shoulder straps were wider and sat more comfortably, and they tend to be made out of non-itchy material.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, they’re the proper sports bras from primark as opposed to crop tops.

I hadn’t considered a bralette, I’ll have a look.

My DD is quite busty (30DD) and I've had her measured and bought "proper" bras for her, several times, but she prefers sports bras and says they are more comfortable. I think she prefers that they give more coverage under a school shirt as well. Very few bras are available in her size but she chooses the plainest (non lacy) ones and then doesn't wear them. Ive given away plenty of her (unworn) old ones that she grew out of. I can't physically make her wear them.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/01/2022 08:48

I can't see any reason why she shouldn't.

She doesn't have to wear a bra at all if that is more comfortable for her.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 04/01/2022 08:50

Yes she will wear "proper" bras when she is ready. Lots of women/cultures don't wear Bea's at all.

GougeAway · 04/01/2022 08:59

This is very reassuring as my 14 year old with ASD won’t wear anything except sports bras either. I’ve given up trying to persuade her.

sheroku · 04/01/2022 08:59

I think bralettes might be the answer. I would have her try a few different styles to figure out what's most comfortable. I have one that I've worn to death as it's so comfortable. Sports bras are normally designed to be quite restrictive and I wouldn't want to wear one all day, let alone all day every day.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 04/01/2022 09:01

I think when I was growing up, we were told to wear bras or it would make a breasts ‘saggy’ and dd seems to have got this idea from somewhere too. I have never said this to her so the opinion must be out there somewhere!

I hate wearing Bras too. My eldest daughter wears crop tops like the ones sloggi sell, or sports Bras. I think its a great idea, I wear sports Bras myself because they give me both comfort and support.

ldontWanna · 04/01/2022 09:13

She doesn't have to wear one at all , unless she's uncomfortable with one or it causes back pain. Sports bras depend on the type , too tight/restrictive isn't good both for tissue and the actual skin. She could give bralettes a go as they seem a good mix between sporty/comfortable and bras.

SusannaQueen · 04/01/2022 09:14

DD always wears M&S high impact bras, the ones with the zip at the front. It had never occurred to me that she shouldn't, she's tried other bras, but she's funny about how things feel and these are all she likes.

rubyglitter · 04/01/2022 09:50

I wouldn’t wear a high impact sports bra everyday because they compress the breast tissue. I hate underwire so I’m still looking for more non-wired bras. I have a few bralettes, but I want other style bras that are non-wired (I’d appreciate any recommendations!)

Trisolaris · 04/01/2022 10:23

I have nerve damage and hate the feel of regular bras - I like the Calvin Klein bralettes. Many have a similar look to sports bras.

EightNationNavy · 04/01/2022 10:39

I wear sports bras - shock absorber run bra- most days ; excellent support, very comfortable, means I can run or jump without any discomfort or embarrassment, and I don't have to wear 2 bras if I'm going to exercise later on. I am in my 50s and have done this for over 10 years and I hope this gives some reassurance (middle aged ladies not being prone to doing daft things to themselves on a whim!).

The model I wear doesn't compress my boobs, just has a very sturdy underband, wide, soft shoulder straps, and an extra back clasp. Boobs aren't flattened, just held in place.

forressttheouut · 04/01/2022 10:43

I wear sports bras or bralettes everyday apart from rare occasions where my outfit requires a proper bra. Never had any issues but I'd agree high impact ones are not great daily to much compression. I wear low impact soft ones which are no different to a crop top. Also like m&s bralettes and have recently been eyeing up kim Kardashians new underwear brand but yet to take the leap.

amusedbush · 04/01/2022 16:20

I have ASD and I can’t bear wired bras, they feel terrible to me. I either wear sports bras or this bralette from M&S.

I’m a 36GG and it’s surprisingly supportive with no monoboob.

HPLikecraft · 04/01/2022 17:01

I also have a teenage autistic DD who hates regular bras! She wears crop tops and basic sports bras but I try to avoid anyhing to tight or compressing.
I think as long as it's not too squashy/squeezy it should be OK.

Champagneforeveryone · 04/01/2022 17:11

I've worn them for years and still have two fully functioning breasts.

As a PP says, I'd perhaps avoid the high impact types. GymShark are very good in the sales and I quite like OddBalls bralettes too which might work if DD is not too big.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 04/01/2022 19:03

Thanks all, very reassuring to hear from those who have worn them with no issues. 😊

@Exhausteddog I think dd is a 30D. Would you be able to link to some that suites your dd please? Pm me if you feel more comfortable x

She has 2 different styles from Tesco (size small) and some from primark (XS) im not sure if they're the most supportive but it's what she finds comfortable. I've been a bit loathe to spend £30+ on a shock absorber for example because she seems to grow so quickly.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 04/01/2022 20:32

She might like the seam free bras from uniqlo, I find them super comfy.

MarieVanGoethem · 05/01/2022 12:32

Sloggi Zero Feel bralettes & tops - soft material, same shape as a sports bra, support but don’t compress. (And there’s currently a big sale on on the Sloggi site.)
