If you went to a "posh" school, what was your experience?

I went to a local girls grammar which was considered to be quite fancy.

School song in Latin
Wool blazer
Ridiculously expensive uniform
Very strict rules on hair clips etc
Skirts measured from the knee with a pen!
4 languages Inc. Latin (Caecelius est in horto... Wink )

Great extracurriculars
Sheltered feeling
Good library for quiet girls to hide in

Positive peer pressure- studying was seen as a good thing
Other pupils didn't swear
Mild teasing about my broad country accent

Others went on lots of holidays, some had second homes, went skiing etc.
Parents were much older than in my primary
Ambitions were higher than in my primary

Negatives:
V v stressful in later years. Intense pressure
Constant threats about "not getting back in" for sixth form
Nasty behaviour due to stress
School prone to forcing out under performers, rather than helping them.
School very image conscious. You had to be pretty and well-connected to get on head girl team etc.
Fawning over rich girls. Prizes handed out to girls whose mothers were on the judging panel Hmm

@Tournaments66 that’s interesting, I have issues with both of those but had never connected it to boarding. I do have deep seated food issues which I can certain relate to boarding and being hungry for the best part of 5 years.

The grammar school I went to had 0 pastoral care, though a couple of kind teachers.

One of the brightest kids had repeated a year in primary and thought she was shit, though she went on to get grade A's in all her A levels. Her lack of confidence in 6th form was so sad, just because she needed a bit longer when she was in primary.

There was a girl like that in my grammar, she was tiny and had been born right on the date line, so she was the very youngest in our year. She struggled a bit and probably would have been better off being held back, bless her.

@MrsMoastyToasty I think you went to my school! Is it in a place beginning with B?

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/01/2022 15:59

@KindergartenKop the uniform was red and it was in a city starting with B in England.

I thought I had a great experience as a working class girl in a public school on an assisted place, but in adulthood I’ve realised that almost all my friends weren’t as cool as I thought, and they turned out to be cliquey, judgemental snobs. It made me reevaluate everything. I wouldn’t send my daughter to one of those schools now.

@MrsMoastyToasty yes! I was there too! Late 90s/early 00s though. Good times!
