shall I get dermal fillers tomorrow?

I am 57. I have never had anything like this done before. I booked to have it done ages ago and the appointment is coming up tomorrow and I'm getting cold feet. This is what is putting me off:

  1. I am worried the swelling and/or bruising might be visible. I am not telling anyone about it. DH and DD are pretty unobservant about me so I don't think they will notice, but I have a zoom meeting two days after. Will anyone notice then do you think?
  2. I was prompted to do it because of a party in about 10 days. I've noticed that swelling can be apparent up to a couple of weeks afterwards. Do you think 10 days is too soon for it to have settled down?
  3. I really hate to miss my yoga class that I do every day but apparently you should avoid exercise for two days. Perhaps that's a silly reason to not do it!

Does anyone have any experience or advice for me. Shall I go ahead?!

Save your money and use it for a relaxing spa weekend. Looking and feeling relaxed and refreshed is better for you than having fillers which always look obvious.

Horological · 03/01/2022 15:10

@BleuJay thanks for your reply and a spa weekend is a great idea!

I don't agree that fillers are always obvious though. I know a lot of people in the public eye go overboard with cosmetic work but I have been really surprised to find out from several people I know that they have had work done. It's not at all obvious, they just look fresher.

I say you go get them, they eventually dissolve over time anyway so aren't permanent. I've had lip fillers and loved them but unfortunately couldn't afford to keep having them done once they had dissolved but I think they are fabulous

I had them last year - they do a lot more for you than a spa weekend and mine aren't obvious at all. But the bruising was extensive and long lasting (took about 3 weeks to fade completely) - luckily we went into lockdown immediately after I had them done so I was able to recuperate in peace - I was having some serious crevasses filled though!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 03/01/2022 15:54

Where are you getting them done. I’ve never had any swelling in my jowls or cheek area but do have some selling in my above the top lip lines that lasts for three days. I’ve never told anyone I have it done each year. I feel I look a bit fresher and less knackered with them.

Newyearnewme2022 · 03/01/2022 16:01

I’m an old hand at having filler, ask to have filler through a cannula rather than the needle directly into your cheeks or wherever, I’ve never bruised enough that it showed through concealer.
Don’t have any numbing cream applied before hand, it swells the skin and most fillers have a little local anaesthetic in them.
My nurse recommends no exercise for 24 hours.
I can guarantee that swelling will be minimal after 10 days, I always have a review appointment after 14 days as the product has settled. Nobody will notice over zoom.
If you do go ahead you won’t be disappointed.

LuckyAmy1986 · 03/01/2022 16:36

I didn't have bruising or swelling when I had mine, I just had the nasolabial folds done though. And it wasn't obvious at all. I would go for it. If you absolutely hate them you can have them dissolved. You never know unless you try! (go to a reputable place!!!)

madisonbridges · 03/01/2022 16:38

What fillers are you having?

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 03/01/2022 17:05

Don't have fillers. No-one needs fillers and paying to have someone stick needles in you isn't fun.

Whenever I've felt unhappy about the way I look, a really good cut (and colour sometimes) at a good hair salon has made the biggest difference.

Simonjt · 03/01/2022 17:10

If you’re unsure I would say don’t do it.

I have a small amount of filler to fill in an injury from breaking my nose, once healed it just makes each side of my nose look even. When I have it done it is swollen to some extent for about a week.

Ohmygodyesthatsit · 03/01/2022 17:29

If your appointment is tomorrow haven't you left it a bit late to cancel. The clinic wont be able to fill the appointment so will either charge you anyway or lose the money neither of which sounds good.

I have a good cut and colour. My hair is lovely. But if I could get fillers to get rid of these marionette lines, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Excitedforthefuture · 03/01/2022 17:39

Go for Botox first

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 03/01/2022 17:46

@madisonbridges I don't even know what marionette lines are and I'm not going to look. Nothing the "aesthetics" industry likes more than inventing another imaginary problem for themselves to fix.

Thatswhatmamasaid · 03/01/2022 18:06

I say go for it and good luck!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 03/01/2022 18:07

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain no one needs a hair colour.

millypeggyandpandora · 03/01/2022 18:11

I say go for it! Have had it done about 3 times and it improves my appearance for longer than a hair dye and cut.Very little swelling either. I wouldn't do yoga for 24 hours though.

Horological · 03/01/2022 18:44

Thanks for all your replies.

It was an appointment for naso labial lines. I'm not sure what kind of filler, I guess it was going to be discussed at the appointment.

Anyway I cancelled. The main thing was the worry that there might still be bruising or swelling when I went to the party in about 10 days. I would be really embarrassed if it was obvious.

I have never had that kind of treatment before and until recently I guess it was something I didn't really approve and imagined it would make me look like a pillow face. I really think that it's much more common than many people imagine though and the result can be really subtly good. Some celebrities have over done it and that's what people think when they think of fillers.

I'm going to do it when I have at least two weeks recovery time afterwards so there's no danger of it being obvious.

If you didn’t even know what type of filler you were going to get injected, I think this is the right decision. If you decide to go ahead at a later date, you need to do far more research about what’s involved and your practitioner.

PeonyAndSweetpea · 03/01/2022 19:51

Before resorting to Botox/fillers, try CACI ....it's a non-invasive treatment and it's great for smoothing lines and lifting your face. You'll notice a difference after one but if you can commit to a course of 10 the difference is amazing

PandoraP · 04/01/2022 06:04

I have booked for a consultation for fillers and Botox today. I am nearly 50 and also want something done to my marionette lines. I am not worried too about wrinkles, but marionette lines and jowls are really ageing and bother me A LOT. I already have a good hair cut. OP, I think a consultation first is a good idea and you can ask the questions you need and also feel comfortable about your practitioner. One of my worries is also that I won’t be able to go to the gym for a few days as I never miss a session😅

Also don’t agree that fillers are always obvious. If it’s not obvious you are not able to tell are you?

MrsDThomas · 04/01/2022 08:43

Dont do it.

It sucks you in and it won’t stop. I have seen many women Ruin a beautiful face by doing it. No one needs them.

Guacamole001 · 04/01/2022 09:11

Go to a very successful practitioner. Not somebody who does as a sideline.

I have had done twice. I prefer Restylane to Dermalux (not sure how to spell it).

Drink plenty of water to make the fillers la st. I am 58 if that helps.

I use Arnica remedies to get the bruising go fast and after five days I am fine.

morechocolateneededtoday · 04/01/2022 09:17

On a forum like this, you will get answers from those who've had it done and are delighted with outcome or those strongly against and wouldn't even consider. It would make me struggle even more to make up my mind if I'm honest.

Fwiw, I fit into latter category. Have you looked at face yoga before? Takes some commitment and much longer to see results but combined with regular facial massage at home, it can take years off

PandoraP · 04/01/2022 10:07

I would be interested if posters out their ages and photosWink I also never considering botox and fillers before I hit late 40s and developed real lines and jowls almost overnight.
