Oh I’m so glad my Christmas tree and decorations are away!

Just took all my Christmas lights and decorations down today. All packed away for 11 months.

I love Christmas and I love getting the lights up but I just feel really fed up with it now and I was sick looking at my decorations. I was going to keep them up to tomorrow but I just thought no way, I’m going to have to take them down today.

I’m hoping in 11 months time I’ll be ready to put them back up again!

Anyone else the same?

Ours came down today too. I have fresh flowers and may light a candle later!

Normally our house feels stark without the decorations but this year it just felt less cluttered.

No I feel like it looks all bare now! I miss the cosy fairy lights

I also feel all weirdly melancholy when putting them away… like who knows what might happen between now and when I get them out again. What losses or major events might have occurred, hoping that we’re all still here fit and well. Is that weird?

I feel exactly like this, every single year. Always in my head I'm thinking "what will life be like when these boxes come out next?" It's a strange feeling, I suppose a mixture of anxiety, hoping that everything will be ok in our lives and that of excitement and intrigue as to what lies ahead in the next 11 months. We took ours down yesterday and I feel the house is calm and relaxed. As much as I love all our decorations, they do make everywhere seem busy and congested and we have quite a spacious home!! Happy New Year everyone 🎉

I'm another staunch keeper of the 12 days. I find the trend to put up early and take down early quite crass. It makes the run up and the presents the theme of the event. For us the ongoing festivities, games, family time, songs and feasts throughout the 12 days culminating on the 5th jan is the theme.
But all that said- who the hell am I to judge others? Do what makes you happy and I completely understand the feeling of clean and clear you get after the take down. It's fabulous to have them up and enjoy the festive season but it IS exhausting and that snap back to normality is also lovely.

I'd donate them all to the charity shop if I had my way.
Everyone else is game when it comes to putting them up, but when it comes to packing them away I'm having to almost beg for help to pass them up to me in the loft Angry
I may have made them a little more inaccessible for next year as pay back....

Oh there’s no way I could bear having my decs up any longer!

How long have they been up? [/quote]
Since the second weekend of December so about 3 weeks now. Long enough for me!

I don't understand this at all. I love my Christmas tree and will miss it when it's gone! Those of you who feel like it's clutter and driving you crazy, is it getting in the way of things or in space that you need? I'm just trying to understand why you'd want to get rid of the pretty twinkly lights. We only have a tree and some lights on the fireplace so maybe that's why I don't feel desperate to get rid. Everywhere else still looks normal.

Newyearoldyou · 02/01/2022 18:50

No I'm still loving them and will keep them up for a good while yet

Newyearoldyou · 02/01/2022 18:50

I've got Dec's everywhere.

InFiveMins · 02/01/2022 18:50

I take my decorations down early - I take mine down before New Year so I can start the year afresh with a clean house. Ever since being a child I've found Christmas decorations up after Christmas a bit sad and depressing - I love Christmas including the build up to it, the day itself and the following days - but after 29th-ish I feel like I need them out of the way.

I used to hate taking the decs down for the very same reason for some reason this time around, once Xmas day had passed, I couldn’t wait to get them down!

Mine came down today, as next week we will all be back at work /school. With obligations and activities starting up again I won’t have another chance to do it. It’s been fab though as had longer off than usual. How do people have another week of feasting and fun? Are you independently wealthy without children? Who are you doing it with? I feel like I’m missing out!

itsgettingweird · 02/01/2022 18:58

Mine came down NYE. They do every year.

I like to start the new year all tidy away and organised.

It usually lasts until school goes back 🤣

Snowiscold · 02/01/2022 18:59

No, the tree comes down at 12th Night. But decorations, lights, holly etc stay till Candlemas in February- as should be traditional.

Yes I'm the same, I always feel very sad and weird about taking them down. I split it into two halves to soften the feeling a bit, so the decorations etc are down and there's just the tree left. It needs lugged outside so it's a bit of a pain to do.
Icantremembermyusername · 02/01/2022 19:04

I over decorate my small house every year! We de Christmassed today and I feel like I'm living in a mansion, lol!

There's no 'should' about it; it's what fits around people's lives.

Everyone I know is feasted and funned out. Like it or not, the modern way is to have Christmas parties and dinners through December now with the final day being New Years Day. No one told my kids school the twelve days of Christmas lasts until the 6th and I'm not sending him in to a new term with the Christmas tree up.
cptartapp · 02/01/2022 19:08

Ours come down on the last day of the darts, so it's tomorrows job.

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2022 19:08

I'm normally a keep them up until twelfth night kind of gal, but I've decided they are coming down today/tomorrow. DH is away next week and I won't be able to get the tree out of the house without his help, so it needs to go. I might leave up the lights in my conservatory for a while because they look so pretty.

user1471443411 · 02/01/2022 19:09

Remember not to put them up so early next year Wink

Our garden lights will stay for the winter on timer! We love having those on as soon as the nights draw in!
LadyCleathStuart · 02/01/2022 19:11

I also feel very melancholy when the decorations go away. A year is a long time and so much can change.

However I was glad to take them down, we had ours up really early this year as I was worn down by DH and the kids with their whinging to put them up so by 2nd Jan they had to be away.

I'd still take them down before going back to work in the new year if I put them up later. It's about fitting it into our schedule! Xmas Grin
Ffsmakeitstop · 02/01/2022 19:14

I was going to take mine down tomorrow but found these two pretty vases at half price in a mill shop today so will have to leave it all out until Wednesday. Oh well.

Oh I’m so glad my Christmas tree and decorations are away!

Twelfth night rarely works with our schedules. We are back to school / work by then.

All of ours was done today (kids tree, decorations, lights, candles, festive twigs) all that remains is the 7ft, beast of a tree which we'll take to the collection point tomorrow.
