What do think about Postmen working on a Sunday?

Just seen Royal Mail vans out on Sunday! Apparently this is a permanent thing delivering parcels. What do think about Postman working on Sunday’s if they wish too?

Sunday! I've literally just realised I had post today and it's Sunday!

Post shouldn't come on Sunday! If they brought back 2nd post, they wouldn't need to do Sunday post. Would create more jobs too

girlmom21 · 02/01/2022 15:53

@Smurf1984 I don't think that was a personal attack on you Hmm

CornishTiger · 02/01/2022 15:54

@Smurf1984 no need to be so aghast. I said it’s a bit annoying not enraged to anything. I rarely get a lie in. I am always alert for the kids but they do seem to deliver a surprise parcel when rare sleepy dust has hit.

I’d have no issue getting it from sorting office. It’s not far away. Hence why we are one of first drop offs.

Very aware of that 🙄
Is is however a poor attitude which I felt needed addressing 💫

Just a little reminder to be thankful for these services that’s all ✌🏻

Loads of people work on a Sunday.

In fact we I went to work in an office at the age of 30 it was the first time I’d ever had a job where I had two days off together and both at the weekend.

tigger1001 · 02/01/2022 15:58

@FawnFrenchieMum

Parcels, it makes sense. They need to try and keep up with other companies. Standard post not needed.
Totally agree with this.

They have to be competitive to survive and keep people in jobs. Other parcel companies deliver 7 days per week. If parcel force don't offer that service companies will just choose a different delivery company

Like Yodel? Who’ve been promising to deliver my parcel ‘today’ for the last 5 days

MarshmallowFondant · 02/01/2022 16:00

DS worked Nov/Dec for the Royal Mail on saturdays and sundays sorting parcels in the main distribution centre for our city. They get extra for working Sunday. DS was on a 12noon-8pm shift and was clearing something like £13.50 an hour.

Smurf1984 · 02/01/2022 16:00

@CornishTiger

Oh fuck off *@Smurf1984* I don’t need to be told to be thankful for these services.
Have a great day 😘
CornishTiger · 02/01/2022 16:03

They used to have a round on a Sunday that involved collecting mail from post boxes and transporting to nearest mail sorting depot over an hour away. That was a good shift to pick up pay wise.

A lot of the good terms and conditions have been eroded though. Posties used to be done by 1pm. 2pm latest. Not the case now.

PriamFarrl · 02/01/2022 16:09

Do Posties still get a half day on the Queen’s birthday?

OyCuntyChops · 02/01/2022 16:11

Nope, I think it’s a step in the wrong direction.

Where I live we get post delivered Mon-Friday. They only deliver on the last two Saturdays before Christmas otherwise, no Saturday deliveries.

I don’t see why everything has to be open 24/7. Most of our ordinary shops stay closed between Christmas and NY and only the supermarkets open. We have no 24hr supermarkets and we survive just fine. Even the garden centres and hardware stores never open on Sundays over here.

LubaLuca · 02/01/2022 16:16

I'm not bothered either way. I'm never desperate to get deliveries asap so it won't benefit me greatly, but if there's demand for it and the employees are keen to cover additional shifts then I'm all for it.

Herbie0987 · 02/01/2022 16:17

I was a child in the 60s and my dad was a postman, he worked Sunday on a rota, we also had 2 deliveries a day.

Kite22 · 02/01/2022 17:03

Why not? Are they super special and need to be protected from Sunday working?

Lots of people work on Sundays

Why not?

Maybe because we shouldn't be racing to the bottom ?
We should be looking to improve people's lives, not make things worse for people.

BlackberrySky · 02/01/2022 17:06

@HNY2022mam

Why is it something to have an opinion on?
Err, because this is the Chat section, where people, y'know, chat about things.
TippledPink · 02/01/2022 17:17

My friends OH does a Sunday shift every week with Royal Mail delivering parcels- he has a full time job in the week doing something else.

But it's also possible to look at it the other way. It does improve some peoples lives having deliveries available at the weekend. It means some can schedule deliveries for when they are home. People who are working at home can get things when needed. People who are being covid cautious can get things delivered. The more people buy online the more demand there is for deliveries.

Not everyone has a hatred of working at weekends.

Not everyone is the same. Some hate the thought of working weekends, some prefer it. Some want weekend work as it makes childcare easier and cheaper. There isn't a right or wrong way to live and it's certainly not a race to the bottom.

MrsFionaCharming · 02/01/2022 17:21

As long as it only applies to new staff who can choose whether to take the job or not, I don’t see the problem. Enforcing it on existing staff who may have chosen the role specifically to be sure they always had that day off (maybe for family or religious reasons) wouldn’t be fair.

Beautiful3 · 02/01/2022 17:31

I think delivering on Sundays is a good idea, it's moving with the times. Most people are working all week and would prefer parcels to be delivered at the weekends, when they're in. If they didn't, I think they'd go under. Too many competitors like amazon and hermes, who are more flexible when delivering parcels.

Georgeskitchen · 02/01/2022 17:44

Posting the letters into the correct letter box would be a start. Some of them can't even do that

tectonicplates · 02/01/2022 17:47

Hermes deliver parcels? They tend to lose them, going by what I've read here.

thecatsthecats · 02/01/2022 17:47

I'd rather the post office added the option of Amazon-locker style pick up.

I do live near a sorting office with very good hours, but lockers would be ideal.
