DS NYE announcement

DS18 just casually mentioned that he preferred it when he was younger and we put the clocks forward 3 hours over the course of NYE so we could all go to bed between 9 and 10. I never knew he knew. I am hysterical (might be the Champagne). Great tip for parents of young ones though hahaha

Fantastic idea!
I’m definitely doing this next year

whachatalkinaboutwillis · 01/01/2022 00:38

I thought they were utterly fooled! We even recorded the fireworks in Sydney and showed them at 'midnight' hahaha - apparently he guessed when he was 12 but was exhausted so keep quiet Grin

12??????

Did he not have access to his own watch/phone? Bless him 🤣

Mumdiva99 · 01/01/2022 00:44

I wish we did that. Hubby told the kids they could stay up. Now I'm over tired and won't sleep. The cats were scared from all the fireworks and now they've calmed down are running around like loons making loads of noise....(like overtired children!). 10pm would have been perfect....

whachatalkinaboutwillis · 01/01/2022 00:45

it was great whilst it lasted, and we are all agreed we're back to it next year Grin

I did that tonight at 10pm for my 6 year old. She'd seen a program about Hogmanay and decided we're celebrating it, despite not being Scottish.

I'm shattered from working all week and need some peace so we sang auld lang syne at 10 and said "bed time now" feel slightly tight, but worth it.

Kookookachuu · 01/01/2022 00:51

This is a fantastic idea Grin

CovidPassQuestion · 01/01/2022 00:51

That is really sweet. My 15yo went up at 10, but the 12yo is watching Sherlock partying hard!

RussianSpy101 · 01/01/2022 00:55

My 3 DC were all asleep for 8pm.
It’s my middle aged next door neighbour keeping me up. 35 minutes of fireworks. For some unknown reason, he felt obliged to shout “wooooooo” with each one.

He can wheel his own bin up next Thursday 😑

MajesticWhine · 01/01/2022 01:03
Grin
ErrolTheDragon · 01/01/2022 01:05

Won't the fireworks in the neighbourhood be a giveaway? I thought they'd finished here half an hour ago but I think they've only just completely stopped now.

NannyGythaOgg · 01/01/2022 01:08

I did that when my kids were young in the 80s.

I also used to do it in the children's home I worked in during the early 90s. These were teenagers and it still worked - so long as we did it gradually. I can't see it working with teenagers today when they all have phones

SinoohXaenaHide · 01/01/2022 01:08

There'd be no point in such a deception around here. The amount of fireworks explosions at actual midnight are impossible to sleep through and the cats need to be coaxed down from the ceiling and soothed to calm placidity once the bangs stop so there's no point attempting to go to bed early.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/01/2022 01:30

fireworks started about 8 here. went on for four hours on and off then massive numberr at 12.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/01/2022 02:05

That was not what I expected your 18yo DS to announce Xmas Grin

He sounds lovely BTW .

(My own DS 22yo announced today that he was going to apply for his Masters , not that I've been "advising " aka nagging him for months )

GoGoGretaDoll · 01/01/2022 02:23

I just admitted to DS16 that we did this at a massive house party of overexcited kids 6 years ago. The host just went 'fuck this NOISE' at 1030 (kids were just overwrought, overdone and over loud), moved the clock, did a countdown and a toast, put the kids to bed and we were back partying (though very quietly) by 11. DS refused to believe that he'd been taken in though, unlike yours!

MenoMom · 01/01/2022 02:28

I used to do this too - the relief of having a countdown at 9pm and going to bed!

immersivereader · 01/01/2022 02:35

This is a fab idea

JaninaDuszejko · 01/01/2022 02:44

Wish I'd done that. In our house the adults are all in bed and the teenager cousins (12, 14, 14 & 17) are still up and watching Despicable Me. The 9yo made it to midnight then went straight to bed.

LondonQueen · 01/01/2022 02:58

That's a great idea! Mine are only just settling back down :/

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 01/01/2022 03:21

Can anyone shed some light on why people start letting off fireworks before midnight?

Local fireworks spanning from 8pm until after midnight sounds like a living hell!

Is it people who are going to bed earlier?

Explosivefarts · 01/01/2022 03:47

I have a house of hyper kids I thought a nap in the afternoon would keep them up to 12 not turn them into all nighters .

Possibly people with family abroad/ whose homeland is abroad? I know a Latvian family well, they live here now but they celebrate a huge part of new year at 10pm because Latvia are 2 hours ahead of us and that’s when all their family are celebrating. Got to be very, very many people in that position.
SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 01/01/2022 03:57

@SleepyMathematician

Hm, I see. It still seems odd to me. I am an immigrant and I just celebrate the new year of the time zone that I am in.

Mind you, fireworks are illegal here. So I wouldn't know if other people were celebrating at a different time!
