DS NYE announcement

DS18 just casually mentioned that he preferred it when he was younger and we put the clocks forward 3 hours over the course of NYE so we could all go to bed between 9 and 10. I never knew he knew. I am hysterical (might be the Champagne). Great tip for parents of young ones though hahaha

I think lots of people let them off early so the kids can see them . Lots going off here at 8pm

Fantastic username.

I think explosive farts is potentially firework themed Grin

Ha! We did that tonight. 5 year old DS insisted he could stay up. He couldn't. So we watched the Countdown live in Athens and he was asleep by 10:15. Next year we're going with Russia!

Fireworks illegal where I live also, except organised public events. Most local areas have two lots of fireworks organised - family event that goes off at 9pm, then families go home and put kids to bed, then the midnight ones for adults. They were all cancelled last year due to Covid, back on this year but everything scaled down as not many people going out. Unless you go to where it’s being held you are lucky to see them but irrespective you can always hear them, pets hate it.

If you don’t want to go out, they televise the ones on the harbour, again both a 9pm and midnight show so kids at home watching can do their countdown and HNY at 9pm then go to bed.

tcjotm · 01/01/2022 06:38

@HoppingPavlova sounds like you might be near Sydney too? They started the 9pm family ones when I was a small child. It’s so much more civilised, families can get home before all the drunks are out. As a little kid who was forever falling asleep in parks only to be poked awake ‘look! Look!’ the early ones were delightful.

Haven’t been in years though. Could walk home after when I was young but further away it’s a total faff and you can never find a loo.

HoppingPavlova · 01/01/2022 07:07

Yep, Sydney. I can’t remember when the 9pm came in, it was after I was an adult, some time around when I had my first from memory (mine are adults now). I’ve never lived anywhere that hasn’t also had a local community version including 9pm for kids, we never took ours into the harbour for the 9pm. Funnily, two years ago we decided we would go in to harbour as a family and I purchased tickets to a venue with a meal and fireworks view service (eye watering cost). Something came up with work and I couldn’t make it so we decided to leave it a year (line of friends who happily took our bookings at cost). Then Covid for 21/22 …. We will definitely do it for 2023, just hoping all kids will still be up for it as have their own lives/plans - hopefully paid tickets will be the inducementGrin.

this happened to me as a child, but my older cousin knew he was most put out

Adifferentcorner · 02/01/2022 17:53

Unfortunately, we’d never get away with it, my daughter asks Alexa what the time is practically every 5 minutes 😏

Nailsbythesea · 02/01/2022 18:19

We don't party here -we put recorded movies on and the kids potter in the lounge -kiss and happy new year and watch the neighbour's fireworks if they want to out the front door and then bed.

Love it though.

Alexa needs a 'New Year's with small kids' mode that you can activate for the evening, where she speeds time up and then shouts 'Happy New Year!' at 9.
Jaxxy · 02/01/2022 18:47

My next door neighbours do thus for their two girls, I think it’s a brilliant ruse, they celebrate the bells at 8pm……

ShabsLovesTiff · 02/01/2022 19:03

Fireworks on and off all night but always know it’s 12 without looking at any clock phone or whatever. I wasn’t sleeping but lying down poorly and the fireworks confirmed New Year’s Day!

No need to change clocks if you wanna go to bed go to bed it’s so overrated staying up now anyways unless your young and like to party or whatever.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 02/01/2022 19:09

So we watched the Countdown live in Athens and he was asleep by 10:15. Next year we're going with Russia!

You get a 9-minute speech from the overlord himself at midnight in Russia, and then eat a huge meal involving mayo and vodka. I'd, er, reconsider your options.

ArabellaScott · 02/01/2022 19:49

We used to do this. Blissful ignorance of younger kids without phones/devices that advertise the bloody time at them.

How sad that the internet's down next year! I liked the way that Ed Sheerhan said on the Joels Holland programme that his wish was for Ipswich to do better in 2022 as they were losing to Barnet 'at the moment', a match played on December 15th!
