Do you know a Randy?

I was thinking about names that are common in the US but that you would rarely find over here in the UK. I can't imagine meeting a Randy.

Similarly:
Hunter
Patty
Lincoln
Booker
Gunner

I went to the States a few years ago and was surprised at how many men under the age of 30 were called Trevor.

Has anybody come across any babies that have names more common in the US?

I know a teenage Hunter (he's in the UK).

I worked with an American Randy at camp. He told me he had introduced himself to some Brits once. Conversation went:
Him: hi! I'm Randy.
Them: you are?

Gingerbreadrules · 01/01/2022 00:45

I know a baby Hunter

I used to work with a Lincoln. He must be in his 60s now.

thefamous5 · 01/01/2022 00:59

I have a friend with a son (3-ish) called Hunter and another friend with a son called Lincoln. Not American. Lincoln's dad is German if that makes any difference though.

Chuck is also one you would rarely hear outside of the U.S.
I knew a Randy at college in Scotland some years ago, one of his parents was American and he'd spent a good but of his younger years living there.

violetbunny · 01/01/2022 02:58

I met an American once whose name was Randy Farmer! Grin

hannsmum · 01/01/2022 02:59

I know one and he's African

RobertSmithsLipstick · 01/01/2022 03:03

Randy Ponce?!?Grin

Loveinacoldishclimate · 01/01/2022 03:07

I know a Herb in his 40s. When I was 16 I had sneaked into a nightclub and was dancing with a man who told me his name was Randy. I told him I didn’t believe him so he whipped out is monogrammed medallion to prove it to me! Grin

Isn’t it usually a nickname for Charles in the US? Which is interesting in itself that they have nicknames for common names that we don’t.

I’ve never met a Randy. I have met a Barbie but she was from the USA. McKenzie is another name which seems common in the USA but not here.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 01/01/2022 03:17

There are a lot of McKenzies around here. UK.

Stichintime · 01/01/2022 03:23

Meet a toddler Ike very recently. There was a Hunter in Eastenders a while ago, so must be pretty common. Never met a Randy but know a Wally.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 01/01/2022 03:25

Ike is a great name.

Bloodybridget · 01/01/2022 03:33

Is Ike short for Isaac? I used to know a British Travis (name mentioned upthread), and there's a Lincoln in a UK children's book that was published decades ago (Castaway Christmas, Margaret Baker).

ShippingNews · 01/01/2022 03:35

I'm in Australia - I guess some names are used more depending on the country. The names Hunter, Patty, Lincoln are quite normal here. Booker , no I've never heard of one. And Gunner wouldn't ever be used since it is an insulting nickname for someone who is always saying " I'm gunna do that one day " . So his friends will call him Gunna or Gunner.

ShippingNews · 01/01/2022 03:36

I know a couple of US men called Chuck - nickname for Charles.
ThiagoSilvasToe · 01/01/2022 03:39

I knew two people named Randy... One male, one female. I also knew a Lincoln. Love Lincoln- think it's a great name!

KloppsTeeth · 01/01/2022 03:53

I love the name Randy for the chortles. I have also come across Randy Ponce.

GrinI once spent some time at a cemetery in Toronto for a relatives funeral. I always like reading headstones as i think it is interesting with some of names on there and I was pregnant at the time and looking for name inspiration. I remember seeing

Randy Keckz (kecks for pants)
Randy Hornblower

And
Ivana Mandic

Eric seems to be a very popular name for young me. in Canada and I don’t hear it often here on anyone younger than 70.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 01/01/2022 03:55

I'm too childish and pathetic to ever meet a real life Randy Hornblower.
I'd never keep a straight face Grin

Loveinacoldishclimate · 01/01/2022 08:08

Randy Ponce? From a long line of Ponces? Oh dear Xmas Grin

IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 01/01/2022 08:28

I know an Archer (11 years UK). I like it alot. It's always Archer too, never Archie.

Oblomov21 · 01/01/2022 08:37

What do American names such as Randy and Lincoln get shortened to? Because the English always try and shorten any name to 1/3 of a syllable? Wink

Gufo · 01/01/2022 08:46

From the names on this thread, I only know a Hunter. Do like Patty though.

Tenpintonpin · 01/01/2022 08:47

I've known a Hunter, Lincoln, Chuck and Patty, all English. I also once met an American pastor called "The Rev. Randy Bishop" which completely floored me.
