Best fully electric family car

Any recommendations? We’re only a family of 3 but would like extra space for camping/ driving holidays and ferrying DS’ friends around when he’s older. We’re currently looking at the Kia e-niro or Audi Q4 and likely to run it into the ground rather than upgrade.

Can I bump this for the OP as I am also interested in any responses. We are buying a house with an already installed electric charging point and are hoping to buy an electric car.

WouldIBeATwat · 02/01/2022 12:25

I drove the Skoda enyaq the other day. Was quite impressed.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 02/01/2022 12:26

Friends have the eniro and like it but say the boot space isn’t amazing. If you like camping and are likely to need to take equipment around with you, you might struggle (roof box is an option of course to increase capacity when needed).

(Take the range figs with a massive pinch of salt though if you ever drive when it’s cold/dark/hot. And the batteries aren’t likely to be functional past 8 years and need looking after to get them to that point. Just not practical for our lifestyle.)

WouldIBeATwat · 02/01/2022 12:27

Enyaq has a big boot. (It’s based on the Karoq which has the biggest boot in class.)

WouldIBeATwat · 02/01/2022 12:28

Would probably do about 30 miles to a charge with a roof box!

I don’t have much knowledge about electric cars, but I know where you might find some useful information. Try Pistonheads.com, it’s a very popular car forum. They have a section called ‘EV and Alternative Fuels’.

Here's a really nice video on electric cars I just watched:

The KIA EV6 wins here and Skoda Enyaq comes in 2nd. I think the Skoda has the biggest boot which would be useful for camping trips etc.

Also check out Robert Llewellyn (he used to be in Red Dwarf) - he does a programme called Fully Charged where they review electric cars (think it's on Youtube)

We have the Hyundai Kona and it just about fits us and two kids with associated paraphernalia in for day trips. Anything overnight we need the roof box which as pp have noted, does decrease the range. We get around 250 miles on a full charge, dropping to around 160-180 with the roof box.

It's a nice car to drive and we have no regrets about switching to fully electric, although we do live in London and charging is relatively easy relying on on-street or carpark charging points.

We are a family of 3 (and a dog), we are putting in an order for the Volkswagon ID3, after lots of research! It does depend a bit on your pocket obviously This is the most affordable car that fits our lifestyle. We did a test drive and it felt lovely. Has about the same amount of space as our Audi A3 which we manage fine in..

Shade17 · 02/01/2022 15:19

Definitely take a look at the Polestar 2 if it’s in budget. Basically an electric XC40 underneath. The XC40 is good as well.

coogee · 02/01/2022 15:38

Would probably do about 30 miles to a charge with a roof box!

Tesla gave the police a Model 3 to evaluate as a police car. They found that just fitting the flashing lights on the roof noticeably reduced the range.

Topsy1976 · 02/01/2022 15:39

We just got a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and it's a great car. Very spacious, decent sized boot and a real range of about 275miles.

Twospaniels · 02/01/2022 15:45

We have looked into changing to an electric car but after much considerstion have decided against it for the moment. We feel the network of charging points needs to be improved first. Also when we had an electric car as a courtesy car recently we struggled to find a charging point that was compatible, and one charging point wouldn’t allow us to charge because the server was down 🤷🏼‍♀️
We managed to get it back to the dealership with about 8 miles left on it.
I think it could be frustrating if you want to use it for holidays, having to stop for an hour or more to charge up before continuing your journey.

WouldIBeATwat · 02/01/2022 15:57

The Enyak has a 330 mile range. But only if you drive perfectly, at the right ambient temperature, with no lights/heat/air con and with no passengers/luggage. Confused

YesitsBess · 02/01/2022 16:30

I've ordered a fully electric car for delivery in February. I have no way of charging it at home or work and will be relying solely on public chargers and the help of friends and relatives. It's either going to a be a huge and fun learning curve (I currently drive a 2.5 V6 Diesel!) OR an absolute shitshow. Either way it will make a good story Smile

CrimbleCrumble1 · 02/01/2022 17:00

We have the Audi Q4 e-tron on order and will have it in a few weeks. It looks good, we’ll be able to charge it at home and don’t normally go further than 100 mile trips.

mobear · 02/01/2022 17:00

@YesitsBess That’s kind of the way we view it, we don’t drive a long distances often and live in London so I’m guessing we’ll figure it out as we go along!

@CrimbleCrumble1 How exciting! I was told if we order one this month not to expect it until October. What version did you go for?

Thank you for your responses everyone, and thank you to @croon979 also for bumping the post!

mobear I sound so stupid as all I know is it’s purple and cost 50k.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 02/01/2022 17:05

We ordered it about 5 months ago.

Would highly recommend getting the Zap app and searching your local charging points, the community are very good at reporting issues and it's already helped me form a mental map of chargers to avoid! I'd also recommend registering and setting up accounts with all the major suppliers so you don't end up having to do it using 4g in the pouring rain whilst trying to enter your card number (I learned this from Zap also).

Please keep updating as I'm very curious about all this. Whole new world!

mobear · 02/01/2022 17:13

@CrimbleCrumble1 I didn’t realise they made it in purple! We have a test drive booked in a week, and then will have to persuade DP if I think it’s a winner. He has no interest in cars.
