A ghost just whispered in my ear

Just snoozing away happily when someone whispered in my ear and I jolted awake. Thought it was my DH and something was wrong but he's also happily snoozing.

It was something exactly like in a film - clear as day, "wake up." Shock

Now, obviously it wasn’t a ghost. I don’t believe in ghosts. Except maybe when they whisper in my ear at 4am. So now you all can tell me there's no such things as ghosts so I can stop being freaked out. 😆

I’d check nothing is on fire or smouldering in the house

Sourwolf · 28/12/2021 04:04

I did get up and have a wander. Had a thorough check of the biscuit cupboard too. Grabbed mobile phone just in case. Not sure of what but it seemed like the right choice!

It could be an auditory hallucination.

You could have dreamt it. I’ve had similar where someone is calling my name clear as say and it wakes me up and I answer, but everyone is still asleep.

Caka2 · 28/12/2021 06:01

I do believe in ghosts although not had a similar experience myself. Years ago, My sister had a dream about a rucksack that was hovering in midair but it kept inflating and deflating a bit like lungs would when breathing. After a while the bag deflated and then fell onto the floor and someone said very clearly 'be strong' immediately after this happened.
A few days later my dad had a stroke and the family were gathered around him as he died. I believe it was someone warning her of what was going to happen and to prepare herself.

Quite normal to have sound accompanying hypnopompic/hypnogogic imagery.

SameToo · 28/12/2021 06:25

Auditory hallucination/ sleep paralysis. I get it. Varies from voices to deafening music.

Snowisfalling33 · 28/12/2021 06:40

Yep I came on to say it's an auditory hallucination. They're scary until you know what they are and sound very, very real. I go through phases of getting them regularly and you do get used to them.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 28/12/2021 06:47

I know I'm going to suffer sleep paralysis some point that night when I hear someone in my ear. That's usually how it starts and it's normally someone shouting my name. Freaked me out the first time it happened, then trying to force myself to open my eyes but unable to, while the room feels like it's spinning and I feel an "evil" presence somewhere in the room.

I thought I was going mad but a lot of people say they have the same experience. Are you stressed? 4

TheSandgroper · 28/12/2021 07:08

My dc’s name came to me that way, just as I was looking at the dipstick confirming my pregnancy. “This is what it will be and this will be the name”. All came true.

CuriousMariette · 28/12/2021 07:26

Don’t know your age OP but I started experiencing something like this during menopause-it was as if someone had shouted “wake up” in my ear. It scared me at first, then it just pissed me off as I could not get back to sleep. Hopefully it won’t keep happening to you.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 28/12/2021 08:00

Yep, auditory hallucination. Very common. I've had this - someone saying my name, but super close to my ear. Only ever happened once!

GoodnightGrandma · 28/12/2021 08:02

I heard the land line ringing and it woke me up.
The phone hadn’t rung, yet I’d have sworn it had.

GoodnightGrandma · 28/12/2021 08:03

Oh and I don’t believe in ghosts, but I had an incident in a hospital at about 3am once which made me open to the possibility of something.

flapjackfairy · 28/12/2021 08:03

I get auditory hallucinations as well once in a while. Sometimes it is someone shouting my name but mostly it is someone knocking on the door. I am used to.it now though it makes me panic each time.

Rubyupbeat · 28/12/2021 08:58

All my life I've had this. It's bloody scary, mine aren't just whispers, they are shouting.
I also get sleep paralysis so maybe its connected?

Faevern · 28/12/2021 09:12

Happens to me all of the time, my name clear as day or a few words, sometimes in a voice of a family member so I think they are in my home.

I also feel (rather than hear) footsteps in my bedroom, like as if my DP is walking across the floor to the wardrobe or around the bed. So realistic I actually look to see who is there.

Usually when I am in some stage of sleep but it wakes me up. I just assume it’s in my head. If it’s a ghost they are friendly as I never come to any harm.

Faevern · 28/12/2021 09:18

@HopeYourHighHorseBucks oh I’ve had sleep paralysis like that, fortunately very very rare. The first time I was terrified, actually every time was terrifying and yes under immense stress at the time.

I also often know I am dreaming and can talk to myself in the dream or change it or wake myself up if I don’t like it. Apparently that is rare too, so I’ve been told.

Nishkin · 28/12/2021 09:24

I had a weird sleep paralysis thing where the bed was shaking, then it felt like someone was lifting up the side of the mattress- it felt very evil- I sort of croaked out ‘fuck off’ and it stopped. Odd

Theunamedcat · 28/12/2021 09:28

Someone has just knocked my door and woke me up except they didn't

LadyCleathStuart · 28/12/2021 09:31

When my youngest DC was a baby she didn't sleep (I don't mean she was a bad sleeper I mean she did.not.sleep) anyway I was exhausted and used to have hallucinations like this. Someone saying 'wake up' if I was falling asleep or some kinds of sleep paralysis, once I was feeding the baby when I closed my eyes and suddenly couldn't move, I could feel the baby on me and I could hear someone start to move slowly around the living room, then something grabbed my arm and tried to pull me me to a standing position but I still couldn't move. Then as quickly as it began it all just stopped and I was still just sitting in the empty house feeding the baby.

Your brain can play a lot of tricks on you.

flapjackfairy · 28/12/2021 09:31

It tends to happen when I am in that drowsy drifty sort of sleep. I am sure there is a technical name for it but it is that lovely dreamy stage you reach going into or coming out of sleep. We have a child with severe epilepsy and that is the prime time for seizures as well. Something about that phase of sleep lowers the seizure threshold and I would imagine it is the same for this phenomena.

Hotyogahotchoc · 28/12/2021 09:37

These sound terrifying!

TweenWrangler · 28/12/2021 10:06

I've frequently woken up because I've heard the doorbell, except the doorbell hasn't rung. I've also had sleep paralysis in the past - didn't know that hearing things could be part of the same thing, but it makes sense.

CoraPirbright · 28/12/2021 10:08

I’ve had this! When dd was tiny, I had given her the first feed of the day and laid her down on the other half of the bed and accidentally nodded off again. She chose this very time to learn how to roll over for the very first time Hmm. Someone said my name, very clearly and loudly in my ear and I awoke with a start to find her teetering on the edge of the bed. Another second and she would have fallen off! No idea who said the name but I like to think someone was watching over me that day.
