We took in a dobo hamster and my 12 year old absolutely loves him.
My son is autistic and selective mute and suffers from terrible anxiety, I have posted about the struggle it is sometimes. Anyway it has been so great to see him with the hamster. Talking to me about their needs looking after him and he has started talking to his hamster asking him “what do you want” and “what are you up too’ etc etc.
In the short time we have had him he has brought my son so much joy!
My son likes his research and has been researching how to look after D properly and has got a bit miffed that the cages sold in pet shops for small animals mostly are too small.
So he signed this petition and got the rest of the family to sign it.
He asked how can we get a few more signatures I told him I would try.
So please if you can sign , it will make him so happy to see that he managed to get a few more people to sign.

I'm going to spoil things a bit.

I totally get the needs for an animal's home (I used to have mice and the cages for mice are totally inadequate but they can get through the bars of hamster cages) but one of my mice needed an operation and after that had to be limited to a small area and I was able to buy a cage the size of a shoe box.

Would your DS add an amendment to allow small cages for medical need?

Also for transportation? We put cats in carriers that would be far too small to live in but are fine for a trip to the vet.

Signed.I've been campaigning for this for years and never got anywhere.

Please tell your son a huge thank you from a fellow hamster-lover for being supportive of this cause! :)

Signed. I spent £50 on a gerbil tank in pets at home and from doing my own research realised how inadequate it was.

Good for your son. What a lovely boy he sounds. Ive got a hamster, have had any over the years, it infuriates me that places like Pets at Home get away with selling the cages and wheels that they do.

JenniferWooley · 28/12/2021 06:13

Signed & have sent to DD to sign too - One of our piggies doesn't like being out of the pen except for snuggles in DD's oodie pocket so she'd never cope in the tiny cages available in PAH

I agree. I spent a fortune in pets at home when we got our hamster, only to discover about a week later that they only sold one cage that was actually big enough. We went and bought the bigger cage but how could they knowingly sell us the too small cage at the same time as buying the hamster? Ridiculous

Signed and please thank your son. I have worried about this for years (also autistic fwiw) but never thought I could do anything about it
