NYE at home with a 7 year old

Inspire me! I'm working on NYE (NHS) and won't be home before 5.30 so no point trying to book anything last minute. Do you let your 7 year olds stay up until midnight? I've always put DS to bed but now he's getting older I'm not sure. What nice plans do you all have that I can pinch!!!

I let mine stay up but he rarely makes it to midnight

Cattitudes · 27/12/2021 18:01

We do different meals for each country, so BBQ at lunchtime when Sydney goes into new year, curry for tea etc. Plus warching the relevant fireworks for that country. By the time they have celebrated lots of other countries new year they don't feel the need to stay up till midnight.

Mine are 8 and 6 and I put them to bed at normal time! Has never occurred to me to keep them up TBH, they’d be tired and grumpy.

PineConeWar · 27/12/2021 18:04

Change all your clocks so he thinks he's staying up late! Go to bed early Grin

LadyCleathStuart · 27/12/2021 18:05

Im going to let my DC (8 and 5) try to stay up for the first time this year although I don't see them making it past ten.

I have really bad memories of new years from childhood so I've always just ignored it and not celebrated but this year I have realised that I am just clouding my own DC's view of it so I have bought baloons and party poppers etc. and we are going to have a small party just DH, the DC and I then have the IL's for lunch the next day.

trevthecat · 27/12/2021 18:06

We have always put ours to bed as normal! Don't think they younger two would make it to midnight!

Terminallysleepdeprived · 27/12/2021 18:07

@PineConeWar

Change all your clocks so he thinks he's staying up late! Go to bed early Grin
Absolutely this!!!

Dd (8) is meant to be with her dad so will come home about 7 watch a film amd them go to bed. I have no intention of seeing in the new year so will be asleep too

mugoftea456 · 27/12/2021 18:08

I always change the clocks!!

itwasntaparty · 27/12/2021 18:08

Mine are allowed to stay up but they've never made it to midnight and they're 10.

dimples76 · 27/12/2021 18:13

My son is 8 and has stayed up the last 2 NYEs and loves it.

GigantosaurusRex · 27/12/2021 18:15

I think clock changes, a slightly later bedtime and balloons/party poppers may be the way to go. I think I may have some sparklers in the shed. I'd like to make a bit of an effort for him as I've never done much before.

Let them stay up! We usually play board games, watch a film they love ready for the fireworks. They feel very grown up!

Pegasussnail · 27/12/2021 18:17

We have a 7 and 8 year old and will put them to bed usual time but I have sparklers etc and will have a little party before they go to bed.

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 27/12/2021 18:18

My 7 year old is going to attempt to stay up! I don’t think he’ll make it personally but I’m happy to try!

RandomDent · 27/12/2021 18:19

I never did anything till my son was ten and he started asking to stay up. I’m a New Year’s grump though and wouldn’t stay up myself if my son didn’t ask. 😂

DJatthechristmasparty · 27/12/2021 18:23

At 9pm I change the clocks, tell them it's midnight and show a YouTube video of another fireworks display Grin

Stompythedinosaur · 27/12/2021 18:43

We have let our dds stay up the last couple of years - dd2 was 7 last year and managed OK. We have pizza and play board games all night, then get the dds to "first foot" the house before bed.

SkankingMopoke · 27/12/2021 18:55

Normally we host or go to a house party with other familes. We set up air beds and sleeping bags in the bedrooms and put each child to bed as they need it (by staggering times you can get a few children in the same room if they're reliable sleepers). The kids have a great time hanging out together and eating a copious amount of crisps. We usually set up a disco room for them. When they were really little, we did midnight at 9pm and watched the London fireworks from a previous year on YouTube. This stopped once the oldest could tell the time and became a bit more savvy to parental tricks.
Last year we were at home, just the 4 of us (obviously!). We bought a small disco light and a huge bag of party poppers, and threw a kitchen party for 4. They had a great time Grin

1forAll74 · 27/12/2021 19:05

My two always went to bed earlyish when younger, we tried not to wake them up, if having a few drinks, and some music on,or if a neughbour called round whatever

Doublechins · 27/12/2021 19:09

If we have the DC at home we usually all camp out in the living room and watch films

PieMistee · 27/12/2021 19:10

We usually have a party with about 8 families and they kids stay up. Though one of ours used to take herself off to bed when she had had enough! Done this since the youngest was about 3

NavigatingAdolescence · 27/12/2021 19:15

DD(11) has seen in every new year with us.

We usually eat dinner at around 8pm then play a game or watch a film till about 11:30pm then put the London and icelandic fireworks on at the same time and have champers at midnight. Lush.

foxgoosefinch · 27/12/2021 19:19

At that age we put DD to bed then woke her up (as promised) to see the NYE fireworks. This year she is adamant she's staying up for them!

foxgoosefinch · 27/12/2021 19:19

(The TV fireworks I mean, not actual ones!)
