Do you eat well and how do you feel?

My diet is quite frankly shocking and I think it's really starting to affect my health. Im tired and lethargic all the bloody time.

I live off sandwiches, toast and pizza. I can honestly go days without a piece of fruit or veg. The only time I have a 'proper' meal is when I eat out.

So 2022 is year of the diet overhaul. I'm on Sainsburys ordering fish, veg and fruit. All a bit daunting!

So I suppose my question is do you think you have a healthy diet? What do you eat? (Inspiration needed!).how do you feel? Energy levels?

Ugh. I need this thread too. I'm so guilty of skipping meals and then filling up on crap. I usually cook healthy food in the evening but by then I've eaten so many snacks that I'm not hungry for it. I definitely need to get a better handle on things as I feel really sluggish and gross.

I signed up with Gousto recipe box to get out of a horrible unhealthy eating funk and it's been brilliant for rebooting our nutrition and me realising there are lots of straightforward delicious meals to cook with loads of flavours and veg.

I always sneered at recipe boxes and couldn't fathom why anyone would use them and not just buy the ingredients but then I hit a crisis & was so short of time I went for it and am so glad I did.
Have now got a few recipes I absolutely love I would never had tried dead quick to cook and vegan and delicious.

I'm the same re not eating enough healthy wholesome food., Keep intending to try Gousto or Hello Fresh. But haven't got round to it yet. And now there's Mindful chef Ive seen advertised.

Really interesting thread. My diet is rubbish and even if I do cook veg with a meal I will more often that not leave it. I do like salad though.

Do you think you can make yourself like foods if you eat it enough ?? I think I just don't give some foods a chance

Hi OP

I had a bit of a health scare a few months ago, all okay thankfully, but it was the kick up the arse that I needed to sort my diet out. I would go weeks without eating a single piece of fruit and veg and because I'm not overweight I just didn't care what I was eating. Since then I've cut out sugar (I do have a tsp of sugar in my tea 2 or 3 times a week when visiting a friend or family but other than that no added sugar to my food. No biscuits). I try and have a big salad for lunch with plenty of veg and a green juice a few times a week. Cruciferous veg are your friend! I have cut down drastically on processed foods and upped my lentils, pulses and nuts intake. Never smoked or been a drinker so that's not changed.

I usually do intermittent fasting of 18 hours and a 6 hour eating window. This has really helped my health. I have mentioned on MN before that I was having abnormal BT test results almost all last year and GP was asking for monthly BTs. After 2 months of healthy eating and IF, in December the BT results came back normal. I also watch dr Berg on youtube for inspiration although he's a big advocate for keto and that isn't for me. But I find his health advice really helpful.

For anyone interested... There is a thread on chat where we list our daily fruit and veg intake. I feel it really helps me keep on track and is great for ideas and inspiration.

I don't always eat well but I have a chronic condition that is much easier to manage when I do eat well. A good day for me is:

Breakfast:

  • Porridge with skimmed milk, a piece of fruit and a small potion of nuts. I tend not to vary this day to day as it sets me up well for the morning. The odd Sunday I will eat an Almond Croissant instead (got to love them) but am then hungry an hour later!

Lunch:

  • Omlette with a little feta, olives, peppers, maybe a little meat if I'm using something up and a large portion of home made coleslaw or green salad
  • Home made veg soup (veg and lentil, spicy squash, leek and potato) and a small portion of bread
  • Salad bowl with raw mushroom, picked onion, olives, carrot sticks, celery, avocado, nuts, seeds, peppers. Sometimes with a small baked potato or some roast squash. Normally have a low fat cheese triangle with it or some hummus or something.
Dinner:
  • Stir fry veg with noodles and tofu or sometimes left over meat (chicken or something). I tend to use sweet chilli sauce or soy. Sometimes I make teriyaki but that is too good and I eat buckets of it!
  • Cous cous, bulgar wheat or rice along with a big helping of veg (tenderstem broccoli with soy sauce on is a favourite or roast butternut squash with some chilli or a home made salad) and a protein. I like roast chicken or tuna steak or steak. I'm not a salmon fan
  • Traditional meal - e.g. sausage, mash and peas but I tend to do a second veg and go lighter on the sausage and the buttery mash.

For snack:
Fruit, a hot chocolate before bed, rice cakes or veg sticks, low fat cheese triangles, hummus etc..

I drink lots of water and probably too much coffee.

What I don't eat is; crisps, sweets, cakes (I make my own sometimes and then I enjoy them but it's not a daily thing and I don't eat shop cake), biscuits, cola / fizzy pop, cream, full fat milk, lots of cheese (I LOVE cheese but it's all fat so I limit it), take aways (I do now and then but it's rare), ready meals (same as take aways), alcohol.

I also walk twice a day with the dog and get at least 8 hours sleep per night.

Sometimes I slide into bad habits and normally it's feeling exhausted and ill that drags me back to eating more healthily.

Scallops and prawns in white wine sauce with roast potatoes and green beans for tea.

Not the most healthy but a proper meal....

It’s the crap carbs your having.
Try this and you’ll feel better within days:

Drink 2 litres of water per day
2 eggs and Wholemeal toast for breakfast
Tuna salad for lunch/ Homemade soup (carrotts/parsnip/veggi
Chicken & pasta for dinner
