If your baby had severe reflux, did they grow into a very pukey child?

Ds is 3 and if he so much as gets a mild sniffle he hurls like the exorcist at night.

If he's got something in his mouth that he wants to take out, he will reach with his hands to remove it but alas, too late he will hurl.

If the wind changes from north to west, he will blow chunks all over the house.

He's the pukiest kid I know, even the childminder is relaxed the 48 hour rule for him because only once has it been a true stomach bug.

He had severe reflux as a baby and wondered if it was just a continuation of that. Although he had silent reflux and there's nothing silent about this volcano of yak.

On Christmas night he puked into my hair and he ran down my back.

It was hot.

Yes totally. DS is nearly 3 and loves any excuse to hurl his guts up. He has incredibly severe reflux for around 8 months and only came off lansoprazole fully around 6 months ago.

Any cough, cold, minor illness, any minor changes in his diet, a bit of Christmas chocolate etc will all set off absolutely exorcist style projectile spewing for ages. Nursery have also given up bothering and just give him a wipe down and change his clothes.

SheWolfOFFrancee · 27/12/2021 10:54

Not from my experience no. Ds2 and DD both had awful reflux but now as toddlers only been sick once when had a stomach bug.

ItsAllAboutTheLighting · 27/12/2021 10:54

I'm glad I'm not the only one, this reassures me. Although he's had investigations so I should have been reassured already.

Ds suffered with reflux until he was 1.5 and on Ranitadine.

Yes - my DD did but she grew out of it by 3.

ItsAllAboutTheLighting · 27/12/2021 10:56

He just turned 3 a few days ago so hopefully he will soon.

The other thing is, he's incredibly unbothered but it, where as the other two found being sick traumatising.

My son had silent reflux as a baby. It was horrendous as we didn’t get a diagnosis immediately so had months of people telling us it was colic. He grew out of it by the time he was about 18 months and is now a happy, healthy 12 year old who was last sick a few years ago when he came down with the norovirus. It did feel like it was going to go on forever but you wouldn’t know now.

haba · 27/12/2021 11:02

Unfortunately, yes!
My other child has thrown up once in his whole life (even when noro is rife in his school). My refluxy one will throw up at the drop of a hat or the smell of a drain, or the sight of a mouldy orange they left in their school bag, or seeing someone else vomit

haba · 27/12/2021 11:04

But- as you intimate- she's not the least bit disturbed/upset by vomiting herself.
Bonus!

TeaspoonOfDoom · 27/12/2021 11:04

No. DS had reflux so badly that he couldn't keep his milk down. He would projectile vomit all over me, DH, the carpet, the sofa. Everyone and everything stank of vomited milk 🤢 until we were advised by his paediatrician to wean at 4 months. We did that and he began to keep stuff down. And I no longer needed several changes of t-shirt daily Grin. Hard to believe that my hulking great nearly 13 yo DS who is almost the same height as me was such a tiny pukey little thing. He loves his food and is rarely ever sick now, except for the occasional bug.

JulieGoods · 27/12/2021 11:05

Opposite for me thankfully.

Although it was silent reflux with DD.

She's hugely emetophobic now as an older child and only been sick a few times in her life. (Although manages to worry about it most days poor girl.)

Mrsjayy · 27/12/2021 11:05

My Dd is Almost 30 she was the pukiest child ever she had various allergy test but nothing just loved a puke !

Snoopsnoggysnog · 27/12/2021 11:06

Yes mine is a twin, she’s not bothered about vomiting, whereas her twin is completely freaked out when it happens to him (hardly ever)

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 27/12/2021 11:08

Dd now 18 had horrific reflux - it was like the exorcist after every feed. She was still spectacularly vomiting for no reason when she was 4 and was diagnosed with cyclical vomiting syndrome which she still has.

Plantstrees · 27/12/2021 11:17

My DD had bad reflux as a baby. She grew out of it but as a teen she discovered she is lactose intolerent. She was bottle fed as a baby for (my) health reasons but I do often wonder if there is a link.

I pondered cyclical vomiting last night as I held the puke in a towel under his chin at 2am as he exclaimed "finished!"

But he always appears to have a reason, mild cold, something on his tongue, etc where as I'm assuming cyclical vomiting appears to have no reason at all? I should look it up really.

I had severe reflux as a child. I still have severe reflux now.

Luckily I don’t have the puking thing you describe!

Justajot · 27/12/2021 12:25

My DD2 didn't have reflux, as far as I know, but was a puky baby. If you lay her down within 30 min of a bottle, she'd puke up the lot of it and when we started weaning, anything with lumps made her puke the entire contents of her stomach. It caused problems with the HV's weaning expert who was dogmatic about 'no smooth purees'. I thought that was fine if she was willing to pop by and clear up the pools of sick every day. DD2 is a much pukier kid than DD1 - occasionally she'll gag on something or eat too much, particularly at restaurants - there are some I can't face going back to.

Bloatstoat · 27/12/2021 12:50

This is really interesting, have never thought of it but it's true for my DS. He was prem and had bad reflux, gets very car sick and was always sick with colds etc - he's 6 now and had a coldy virus thing (PCR negative) and yes, cue the sicking! He ended up off school for four days even though he was fine just because we had to wait 48 hours from the last sick. I wonder if he will ever grow out of it? It doesn't bother him at all, in fact he usually perks up and feels better afterwards, he's so used to it and he's very practiced at getting it into a bucket which he has to have by him when he's ill if he can't make it to the loo on time. I never connected it with the reflux, just accepted he's always being sick.

Gumps · 27/12/2021 12:54

My ds had horrific reflux - omeprazole, ranitidine and dom peridole. Up until he was around 5 if he didn’t like a food he would just vomit it. Very rarely had stomach bugs though.
He is now 13 and the only over hang is that he can burp the alphabet Grin

MonicaGellerBing · 27/12/2021 12:55

Yes. My DD now 5 had reflux and colic as a baby it was horrendous. She now gags and pukes all the time, when she's coughing, when she runs, if she sees something gross, when she has a cold, the list is endless!

Porridgeislife · 27/12/2021 12:57

I had severe silent reflux as an infant and still have a hypersensitive gag reflex as an adult (will throw up quite quickly). I’m pretty awful around certain smells but the actual act of vomiting doesn’t bother me.

I’m pregnant and my gag reflex has gone into hyperdrive

elliejjtiny · 27/12/2021 13:06

Not sure whether this was classed as severe reflux (would be interesting to know) but dc3 had reflux until 18 months and was on gaviscon, ranitidine and domperidone and still puking. He is still a very pukey sort of child aged nearly 11.

Dc4 had mild reflux that was mostly gone once he started on gaviscon but he was diagnosed with rumination syndrome aged 6 so he pukes multiple times a day.

Oldraver · 27/12/2021 13:11

In my sons case no. He had severe Reflux (never 'grew' out of it) and was on Omeprazole until he was seven

Apart from the odd sickness bug I have never known him vomit

grassisgreen · 27/12/2021 13:14

Yes, DD2 was known as Mrs Pukey. Very refluxey as a baby. Vomiting episodes continued at least every 2 months, and would last for 3 days until she was 6 years old. She is very travel sick and has vomited all over Heathrow security scans, every taxi she's been in, every holiday she's been on. We curtailed our travel beyond 15 mins so she could stay at home. Took her to a paediatrician aged 6 as I suspected gluten and lactose made it worse - the Paed said the coeliac test was negative and I should not be paranoid. I was not happy (to say the least) and told the Paed she should try looking after a constantly vomiting child. Anyway I did it using maternal instinct, cut out gluten and reduced lactose for her and gradually the vomiting has reduced. Her stomach is just super sensitive and we have learned to live with it. She is now a teenager and hasn't had a vomiting episode for 11 months! She knows not to have too much sugar too, always to sit in the front for car journeys, keep her stomach going with carbs. Now I forget that she ever had an issue.

itssarcasmjoan · 27/12/2021 13:24

Sort of. Very reflux as a baby, projectile vomit if she overfed, sick hours later etc.
As a smaller child she would be sick from coughing too much, sick if she chocked even a little bit. Swimming was fun- she'd swallow too much water and be sick.

She's grown out of it thank goodness at15 I can't remember when she grew out of it though sorry
