If your baby had severe reflux, did they grow into a very pukey child?

Ds is 3 and if he so much as gets a mild sniffle he hurls like the exorcist at night.

If he's got something in his mouth that he wants to take out, he will reach with his hands to remove it but alas, too late he will hurl.

If the wind changes from north to west, he will blow chunks all over the house.

He's the pukiest kid I know, even the childminder is relaxed the 48 hour rule for him because only once has it been a true stomach bug.

He had severe reflux as a baby and wondered if it was just a continuation of that. Although he had silent reflux and there's nothing silent about this volcano of yak.

On Christmas night he puked into my hair and he ran down my back.

It was hot.

It’s interesting that the ones used to regularly vomiting aren’t bothered by it. DS is the same- almost immediately carries on with what he’s doing be it eating his lunch or playing a chasing game. He can now say when he’s finished “all gone sick!”.

She'd also get noro every 6-8 months. 24hrs of vomiting every 20mins like clockwork.
She never missed tho bowl or toilet though - well trained in knowing the pre feeling and getting to a safe space

No, ds1 had shocking reflux. And once he was out of the baby days he had a cast iron stomach. He's 14 now and only puked a few times with chicken pox when he was 4 and again when he had noro when he was 10 and that's it.

Do other people catch it?

It's just that that sounds more like cyclic vomiting l.

Yep. My middle DS was like this, it was murder and he was sick in cafes and the like all the time so we were constantly embarrassed.

He's nearly 5 now and actually seems to have grown out of it, he's not been sick for ages. So hang in there!

@JulieGoods

Opposite for me thankfully.

Although it was silent reflux with DD.

She's hugely emetophobic now as an older child and only been sick a few times in her life. (Although manages to worry about it most days poor girl.)

This is interesting. DDs reflux was horrendous she was under a Gastro consultant and on various meds but she just didn't stop puking for about 2 years when she seemed to grow out of it.

She's now nearly 17, has been sick 4 times since she was 2 but also now has a terrible fear of being sick.

Yes generally me as I'm the one she wants when she's sick

Luckily not! DD (3) had silent reflux and an extremely sensitive gag reflex. She started solids a whole 6-10 months later than normal because even bread or biscuit crumbs in her throat would make her puke. Between 15-24 months she would have random puke/spit up episodes if she ate too much or something accidentally getting stuck in her throat. However she grew out of it entirely between 2-3 and hasn't been sick for at least a year now which is miraculous for a toddler.

Interesting note about emetophobia and reflux kids. I'm emetophobic and have no idea if it was related to reflux when I was younger (or whether this is hereditary). DD's puking was a challenge but I've had enough treatment to know how to handle it normally so I didn't let my phobia affect her. Also I'm not really triggered by "non-infectious" puking such as baby spit-ups and gag reflex/reflux issues.

My DTS1 was a champion piker. I lost so much weight BFing him and his sister as I was effectively feeding g triplets as he vomited so much. He was not great 1-2 but better once he was in his feet and then pretty good from about 2. Now I can’t remember the last time he was sick. A couple of years at least (Covid protocols and less contact with people generally has also helped)

huuskymam · 27/12/2021 14:16

Mine didn't, she's 21 in a few months.

liveforsummer · 27/12/2021 14:55

Nope. Dd had horrendous reflux and has never been sick or had a sickness bug in her nearly 9 years since the baby days . At age 3 though so you might be looking at a different outcome 😬

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 27/12/2021 15:15

PP mentioned their child would vomit every 20 mins for 24 hours and it was every few months. As Op said that definitely sounds like CVS. When dd has an episode she can't even keep water down.
There are different triggers for it - in her case it's anxiety or getting over excited, She has a Christmas birthday so that always guaranteed an episode of vomiting and she spectacularly puked over Mickey Mouse in Disney when she was small!
Some children grow out of it, unfortunately she hasn't but has learnt to manage it and recognises when she is going to have an attack so can take medication to lesson the symptoms.
