Why are some people snobby about Baylis and Harding?

I remember a thread this time last year from a mum whose daughter had given her a Baylis and Harding gift set for Christmas that she planned to regift Sad.

My daughter (14) gave me one yesterday (the Mulberry Fizz set). It looks pretty and smells nice. More than that, I knew she'd have been chuffed to bits that she had found something affordable, which looked festive and which she knew I would like. Granted, it's not the poshest brand in the world but it couldn't have made me happier...

I think it’s because it’s a direct rip off of Molton Brown. The packaging of the bottles of soap are very similar.

Also, I think perhaps the fact that you can just pick the B&H gift sets up in Tesco with your shopping smacks of very little effort or thought for the recipient. Now clearly your 14yo didn’t do that, she thought of you and found something pretty and affordable. But that doesn’t change what people think of the brand itself.

I don’t even think it’s snobbery. I’d prefer to wash my hands in some baby soap, than B&H. In fact all we have is baby soap (and carex for dirty jobs - although I’m not keen on the smell of that anyway).

OhWhyNot I said upthread about not understanding why people call Baylis and Harding 'cheap'. I got some this year from Waitrose because I had a gift voucher. As you say if it's Waitrose is not 'tacky'. This is hilarious - buy a branded product from somewhere like B+M or Wilko and it's 'cheap and thoughtless tat'. But exactly the same branded product from Waitrose then it's 'quality' Xmas Grin

My son got me a set however it’s not really what I use however it’s bubble bath etc so I’m sure it’ll be used anything in it I don’t I’ll take to work for use by parents of patients as most are emergency admissions so No toiletries in with them

Lego what I meant was Waitrose did a copy of Molton Brown the pepper one smelt exactly the same

Was smaller bottles. I looked at their website they don’t seem to sell it anymore

But I doubt it will be sneered at in the same way … because well it’s Waitrose

I am sniggering at the posters who say it's not about snobbery but go on to explain exactly why it IS about snobbery Grin
Also at the amount of MNetters who are allergic to B&H Grin

Iv never really tried b and h before. The hand washes b and h in Tesco look nice but I just usually buy the white Tesco own make hand wash. I love the Aldi lacura moisture plus shower gel, it’s lovely. Better than any of the more expensive shower gels I have tried

OhWhyNot · 28/12/2021 17:30

Yes who would have thought paying £20+ for a bottle of shower gel isn’t anything other than paying for quality

Some people are so taken in by having the right branded goods regardless of price/packaging/quality

We have B&H liquid soap bottles in all our bathrooms as they look nicer than Carex bottles, and we refill them with unscented soap from our local eco refill shop. The same bottles have been going for over 5 years now. The snobbier end of MN would be horrified!

Personally, I find that the 'posher' a brand, the more likely it is to give me eczema.

RoseMartha · 28/12/2021 19:31

There is nothing wrong with them. OP I would be pleased if I was given one.
I tend to use liquid soap refills to save on packaging for hand soap so it is not something I go out and buy myself. Before that however I would use Lidl or the cheap (under a £1), tesco one.

I have never owned a molton brown hand soap. My ex in laws used them a lot so when visiting them I used them as they were out for general use.

But there is no way on earth I would buy that for me. I hate the perfumes and the price.

The posters who dont use Bayliss and Harding, do you use Molton Brown regularly?

I get that if you have the money you might do so. But MB is an extortionate amount for something similar you can get for £1-£2.

Most of the population myself included cant afford this.
