Why are some people snobby about Baylis and Harding?

hollielouise66 · 26/12/2021 19:03

I remember a thread this time last year from a mum whose daughter had given her a Baylis and Harding gift set for Christmas that she planned to regift Sad.

My daughter (14) gave me one yesterday (the Mulberry Fizz set). It looks pretty and smells nice. More than that, I knew she'd have been chuffed to bits that she had found something affordable, which looked festive and which she knew I would like. Granted, it's not the poshest brand in the world but it couldn't have made me happier...

This is interesting www.ethicalconsumer.org/health-beauty/shopping-guide/shower-gel. B and H score higher than MB.

So please could someone tell me what makes a soap posh/high end?

Itstheprinciple · 26/12/2021 20:47

I love Molton Brown. I find the fragrances really last, which I know not everyone likes but I do and I find a bottle lasts for ages as you only need a little squirt. Other brands such as Bayliss and Harding don't do that.

MarshmallowFondant · 26/12/2021 20:55

I hate B&H with a passion. SO much single use plastic.

Clearly not snobbery though as in the shower I am currently using bar soap which cost about 79p.

Price doesn't equal quality.

I'm happy to use anything that's of good quality, it can be from anywhere providing its good.
Baylis and Harding are a perfectly lovely gift, to turn your nose up at shower gel or hand wash is hilarious.

I love that link Bitofachinwag, I will use this for checking other products,

The price tag?
DroopyClematis · 26/12/2021 21:01

The snobbery around Baylis and Harding products astounds me.
How can anyone think less of them ? They're soap!

Why would anyone want to spend even more money on effing soap?

Most people put carex or supermarket own brand soap in the lavvy. B&H is vastly superior so just use it.

If you feel the need to scent your bog in Jo Malone's ( or whatever) lungwort and dock leaf soap , costing £47.99 then carry on.

Herani · 26/12/2021 21:02

I used to buy MB a lot, but have now switched to B and H. It all goes down the same plug hole. That said, I see it as every day soap/ shower gel, so as a present I’d have hoped for something a bit nicer. But if it was my DC buying it for me, I’d still love it as I know they would have bought it because it looks pretty Smile

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 26/12/2021 21:03

"I think though it's the lack of thought"

"I would most definitely regift a Bayliss and Harding gift set."

What I find funny is the people who will regift something right after bemoaning the fact that it's a shit, thoughtless gift.
Well it's more thoughtful than than giving someone an unwanted gift from the back of your cupboard 🤣

Suchalicklepumpkin · 26/12/2021 21:04

I am here visualizing your lovely daughter’s delight choosing her gift for you! I would’nt blame you being happy! Happy Christmas

tortiecat · 26/12/2021 21:04

I really like Baylis & Harding, so actually would be very happy with a bottle of their stuff. After DS was born I got terrible eczema due to all the hand washing after nappy changes - I tried all manner of unscented soaps and soap substitutes but found that the B&H white liquid hand soap is the only thing that works for me... so it is next to all our sinks now, I don't care if people judge me!

tortiecat · 26/12/2021 21:06

& that is a lovely gift from your DD, OP. Really good from a 14yo, it's so nice and refreshing to hear that someone has put so much thought into a gift and the recipient is happy Smile

Sideorderofchips · 26/12/2021 21:06

Utter snobbery

I love the stuff

SilverHairedCat · 26/12/2021 21:08

Baylis and Harding is dreadful cheap tat which strips the good oils from the skin and leaves you with dry, painful skin. Every time. If you're lucky enough to get on with it then good for you but much of the population can't touch it. Although I feel the same about more expensive tat.

frogsbreath · 26/12/2021 21:09

My online shopping order substituted my usual liquid soap for a big bottle of Baylis and Harding mulberry fizz hand wash.

Ds (10) questioned the fancier than normal hand wash and I said it was a sub, "it's a bit festive isn't it?"

He refused to use it, insisting I put out a bar of normal soap until Christmas morning when he lavishly lathered up with mulberry fizz and declared, "ahhhh! I've been looking forward to that!"

I will continue to buy Baylis and Harding hand wash now I have a fan of washing hands about Grin

User2638483 · 26/12/2021 21:10

I think it’s just the feeling that it was/is trying to be something it wasn’t. So the similar packaging shape and font to Molton brown which was much more expensive.

User2638483 · 26/12/2021 21:10

For me, anyway.

SilverHairedCat · 26/12/2021 21:13

And yes, it looks like Molton Brown which is also shite and strips the skin.

Cosywosy · 26/12/2021 21:13

I received a set in a family Secret Santa. I personally thought it was a crap gift, I don't love B&H and it's pretty generic. I would only gift toiletries if I knew it was a brand/scent that the recipient would like or has asked for.

I bought a gift that I knew my family member would like, based on their interests and its insulting that I'm worth a thoughtless toiletry set and a bag of chocolates.

If my young daughter bought me a set with her own money I'd be more grateful.

Fetchthevet · 26/12/2021 21:14

I like it.

I hope your daughter doesn't get to see these comments.

Me too!! I had that warm and fuzzy feeling reading it. I hope my son is that sweet and thoughtful as a teenager (I'm sure he will be, he's an angel 😉)
alwaysneedanap · 26/12/2021 21:18

I didn't realise there was such vitriol about Baylis and Harding until seeing so many threads about it recently! I leave loads of it in my holiday let for guests to use. It looks nice, smells nice, and washes your hands. What's not to like?!

Livpool · 26/12/2021 21:18

It is just snobbery really. I don't get the hate either and I was bought Molton Brown for Christmas. I would have been happy with either

😂 your son is excellent!
A580Hojas · 26/12/2021 21:19

@JustLikeaJingleBell

I'm happy and I like to use it but I'd hate to get it as a present as it's often in my weekly Tesco shop. It's a bit like being given a bottle of shampoo imho.
I agree with this but, like OP, I would have been really touched if my 14 year old dd had given me a special gift set for Chriatmas. From anyone else it's a lazy present - I'd prefer a pot of hyacinth bulbs or a pair of bamboo socks or something.
PoshWatchShitShoes · 26/12/2021 21:20

I hate B&H toiletries. It gives me the ick just looking at the packaging.

Having said that, if one of my DCs gave it to me as a gift, I'd treasure it and make a big fuss about how awesome it is 😆
