Have your pets ever stolen any food they really shouldn't have, e.g. a roast chicken, a bag of flour ?

Our dogs generally only ate what was given to them; I concede there were some less than healthy titbits like cheese and chocolate. One Christmas, one of our spaniels decided to help herself to a box of chocolates that was wrapped up under the Christmas tree. What she didn't know that these particular chocs were the liqueur variety and she was decidedly off-colour the next day. Served her right, naughty pooch! These days, such an event would likely mean a trip to the vet for a stomach pump and other horrid things. But she lived another twelve years and didn't pinch anything ever again.

the turkey i could forgive but stealing my banoffee pie, nope! i sulked all night, bloody miss that dog though

Manc2 · 25/12/2021 20:30

Oh yes my collie ate an entire Easter egg at once and was fine. And an advent calendar

Hellocatshome · 25/12/2021 20:34

Our now dearly departed Ddog stole a huge bag of Haribo, when we got in and discovered the evidence we filled her bowl of water as she was panting she drank a huge bowl of water in one go, her belly swelled up like a beach ball and she promptly vomited EVERYWHERE I have never seen so much vomit in my life. We called the vets who said given the length if time betweeb the eating and the copious vomiting she would be fine.

Caught the cat eating the bacon out of the sprouts and later licking the beef joint just a few hours ago.

Only turned my back for a minute.

Years ago my childhood dog stole and ate a whole box of chocolates. It was so out of character and I just don't think it was common knowledge that chocolate kills dogs?

Anyway presumably there was very little actual chocolate in there because she lived to be nearly 20...

A whole carrot cake off the side.
The carrot and mince pie for Santa last night.
An entire dish of sausage and mash that DH for some insane reason left on a low bench when he got called away suddenly for work.
An assortment of high heels, slippers, and trainer heels.
The eyes of all the stuffed toys she can find.
Every bed she's ever had she's eaten half of.
She even managed to eat part of a Kong, and half of one of those reindeer antlers they say are indestructible. Tennis balls don't stand a chance!

Oddly, for a lab x GSD cross she's very relaxed around her real food and will often leave half the bowl and come back later.

One of my previous spaniels once came home with a whole roast chicken in her jaws. I have no idea where she got stole it. I know I should have but I didn't dare go and check with the neighbours Blush

A cat of ours years ago figured out how to open the fridge and help himself to whatever he fancied. My mother had to tie the door shut with a scarf. Thieving cat still managed to attack the turkey one Christmas, much to my mother's fury.

Another old spaniel once ate DC's Easter egg that he'd stupidly left on the floor. DC was most upset but thankfully pooch was fine.

One of this generation's spaniels has long legs and an attitude and will snaffle anything in her reach off worktops if we turn our backs. We've got wise to it now and usually remember to push things out of her reach.

My cat once are a batch of raw duet dumplings I had waiting in a bowl to top the need stew. 8 of them.

Yes... our dachshund is renowned for being the greediest, naughtiest dog ever! He's had a giant bag of chocolate raisins (needed the vet after that one!), he's managed to jump to the worktop and get crumpets, bread and a box of jam tarts. He also snuffled a whole box of gravy bones in one go out of a shopping bag. He was like a little barrel walking round after those! I think he might actually have something wrong with him as he's constantly hungry and looking for food!

Buytoomuchonebay · 25/12/2021 20:39

My dad used to make 3 sandwiches, cut them down the middle to make 6 smaller sandwiches and then he’d leave it all on the side to nip to the loo
For weeks he’d come back and find 5 sandwiches
He thought he was loosing the plot until he did the making them and nipping to the loo-only he didn’t-he hid out of the way and saw his larger dog was swiping one half and sharing it with my granddads smaller dog!

I once hid a large cream cake under my duvet away from hungry teens-came home looking forward to it and my dds dog had eaten the lot-leaving a corner of the box behind

Love dogs but not that bit!

My 7lb Jack Russell ate a 4lb roast chicken, still hot, whilst I was in the shower. She spent the night feeling very very sorry for herself.

Floralnomad · 25/12/2021 20:44

A cat we had as a child stole a whole roast chicken from the house over the road and my sister had a mastiff x ridgeback dog that are whole boxes of chocolates ( including wrappers ) and a whole turkey carcass with some meat left on it another year .

HippyChickMama · 25/12/2021 20:45

We have a very greedy ragdoll cross that likes to steal food. The day we got him we shut him in the lounge to keep him apart from our other cat while we were having dinner, came back in to find he'd ripped open a packet of Dreamies and was eating the lot. Made the mistake of leaving shopping bags unattended once and he stole and opened a pack of meatballs and once turned my back for a second while making dd's lunch and he stole half a ham sandwich from the worktop. He will eat or drink anything given the chance and I now have to put something heavy on top of the bread bin because he's worked out how to open it

Moonface123 · 25/12/2021 20:47

My rehomed lurcher has embarrassed me beyond belief in the past. Good job l love her. Thankfully she is much better behaved now.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 25/12/2021 20:55

Unwrapped and ate a selection box. Swiped a roast chicken off the side and ate it and copious amounts of bloody sea salt butter!!!! I get it out of the fridge mean to put it in the butter dish and then boom I get distracted and the bloody dog swipes it!

WildRosie · 25/12/2021 20:55

I don't care for the stealing but I do admire the brains and resourcefulness of these beasts. It's widely acknowledged that Labradors will eat anything but it seems spaniels are similarly inclined too.

Beagles.....known food thieves. Our boy has stolen a tin of baked beans and chewed them open, demolishing the contents. How he didn't cut himself I have no idea. He's stolen defrosting food from the worktop when my back was turned (pork chop and chicken quarter on separate occasions), a Christmas cake (which I got back without him actually getting a bite), a dozen eggs from the cupboard (we have child locks now), a bag of self raising flour, a raw jacket potato as I was putting it in the oven, and numerous apples. He's slowed down a bit now he's 12! Our female doesn't steal, but 'shares' his spoils (barks until she gets what she wants). Get a beagle they said, it will be fun, they said....Grin

We have whippets……

PoopySalata · 25/12/2021 20:59

Years ago my friend house sat for me to look after my dog while I was on holiday. Her mum gave her two roast chicken breasts in a sandwich bag and she left the on the kitchen counter.

When she went to put them away they were gone. She thought she mustn't have brought them over and promptly forgot about it.

Two days later the dog was straining to poo on its walk. A sandwich bag came out Envy

2reefsin30knots · 25/12/2021 21:04

Our greyhound used to think it was hilarious to steal the tub of butter off the counter and run to the end of the garden with it. You can't catch a greyhound. She'd be joyously licking it by the time we got to her every single time.

StopSkrikin · 25/12/2021 21:05

The cat went next door and ate the old fella's chicken dinner off the kitchen counter. Came back with crumbs around her mouth.

Same cat helped herself to lamb chops left out to defrost. They were bagged up, but she still got at them.

She lived to a ripe old age of 20. Bloody miss that cat 😊

WildRosie · 25/12/2021 21:08

Some stupid animal will one day glue their jaws together when they are clueless enough to steal flour.

In 10 years the only thing our doodle has ever pinched was half a iceberg when he was a puppy and father in laws haul of strawberries he'd picked and left on side when we were on holiday. Only side effect was he spent the whole day weeing afterwards!

TroysMammy · 25/12/2021 21:10

My as a kitten my cat nicked a piece of buttered malt loaf and took it to his bowl for later. That was my malt loaf and I took it back and ate it.

He stole a marshmallow from a packet yesterday and thought it would be a good toy.

He was lapping at my sponge mix recently. He tries to steal quite a bit but is usually caught in the act.

Dacquoise · 25/12/2021 21:11

One of my miniature schnauzers stole a whole pack of chocolate croissants off the kitchen table and disappeared down the garden to enjoy his stash. That cost me a bit in vet's bills although not enough chocolate to make him ill.

Both schnauzers disappeared into the bushes on a walk and reappeared carrying a loaf of sliced bread in a bag. Little whatsits made me chase them to get it off them. No idea why someone had put up it in the bushes.
