Have your pets ever stolen any food they really shouldn't have, e.g. a roast chicken, a bag of flour ?

Our dogs generally only ate what was given to them; I concede there were some less than healthy titbits like cheese and chocolate. One Christmas, one of our spaniels decided to help herself to a box of chocolates that was wrapped up under the Christmas tree. What she didn't know that these particular chocs were the liqueur variety and she was decidedly off-colour the next day. Served her right, naughty pooch! These days, such an event would likely mean a trip to the vet for a stomach pump and other horrid things. But she lived another twelve years and didn't pinch anything ever again.

I remembered also our DSpaniel getting pissed on my dad's home brew beer which had sprung a leak in the night and had been dripping steadily onto the kitchen floor. Ddog licked it all up, went back to bed and woke up with an almighty hangover the next morning Grin

@YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp

Oh, and one Christmas everything was out on the table for dinner when we had a call to say the cows were out. Someone DH didn’t shut the dining room door so we came back to 3 dogs finishing off the entire dinner.
I think the dogs had let the cows out.

@Chanel05

I was eating a dinner on a coffee table once and before I knew it, my old cat went up on his hind legs and took the whole piece of steak from my plate in his mouth and ran off down the hallway.
A previous cat of mine did something similar.

I was making fish and chips and had plated it up and placed it on the table. I turned around to clean the worktop and turned back to find a plate with chips but no fish.

The fish was now on the kitchen floor but not being eaten as the cat was loudly complaining it was still too hot.

So, she had cooled fish and I had egg and chips.

Last Xmas our year old dpuppy ate 5 mince pies...
No ill effects.
As a dc my ddog ate a dozen easter eggs with the boxes... No ill effects.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/12/2021 16:17

I once had a chicken who stole a chicken kebab off the barbecue. She was running round the garden with it in her beak with me chasing her.

@plominoagain

When we took on our Dalmatian, we didn’t realise she could open oven doors . Until we saw her disappearing across the patio with a pretty much done roasting chicken in her jaws , wings akimbo . She ran into our field and we had egg salad for dinner .

Same dog used to lay behind you when cooking , but she was like a ninja , and would sneak up and then flump to the ground like a comatose sausage , so you would trip over her . One Christmas she did it just as I had got the turkey out of the oven , turned round and fell over her . This catapulted the turkey out of the tray and aided by butter and roasting juices , it them slid the length of the hallway , pursued by not only the spotty demon , but by the clueless but enthusiastic greyhound cheerleading alongside . DH then wrestled it from her , crying “ I didn’t spend £35 to feed the fucking dog “ and we rinsed it under the tap , bunged it back in the oven for a quick blast and in-laws who were two sherries up didn’t notice a thing !

Not human food, but our Lab x once got into the shed and ate 5kg of chicken feed. He was so bloated and ill he nearly didn’t make it and was in the vets for days. He’s never shown any interest in it sinceGrin

UserError012345 · 26/12/2021 17:38

No. My cat only eats her food and is not allowed to jump up on counter tops.

ISpyCobraKai · 26/12/2021 17:43

My cats go wherever they want!

AdditionalCharacter · 26/12/2021 17:54

My cat comes home often with a slice of bread. She never eats it, just sits there, looking very pleased with herself that she has yet again saved us from the savage loaf king.

LadyCleathStuart · 26/12/2021 18:00

Tge youngest of my 2 dogs will steal anything he can, he is also quite big and can stretch really long so can reach anything on the counters. In our old house he could open the lower kitchen cupboards by using the handles so all food had to be moved high up. He hasn't figured out the handless doors in the new house yet.

On DS's birthday we had taken one slice of the birthday cake, turned around to put it on a plate and he jumped up to the counter, pulled the rest of the cake down and ate it all within about a minute. This was a four layer cake to serve 16 people so he ate 15 peoples worth of servings and surprisingly enough had us up most of the night with a sore tummy and needing out every 5 mins.

Bushkin · 26/12/2021 18:02

An entire banana loaf as a puppy then half a chocolate orange yesterday. According to vet because dog is large and it’s milk chocolate all should be fine but felt v guilty

WildRosie · 26/12/2021 18:07

Are these animals displaying a keen survival instinct by stealing all these things - edible or not - or are they just greedy so-and-sos?

As a puppy DH caught him once sat at the kitchen table drinking my mug of tea.

But otherwise he is very good and doesn't steal food but looks constantly at the floor because 'things sometimes fall there for him' Grin

Letsnotargue · 26/12/2021 18:24

Our greyhound ate loads of things he shouldn’t have, but it was usually our fault for leaving them in his reach. Dark chocolate gingers (wrapped Christmas present), half a guinea fowl, three mini onion baguettes, a punnet of plums (through the plastic netting which was unbroken), chewed through many pockets of trousers and jackets to get
to the dog treat in the pocket. Not to mention the bag of knitting, new sponge mop head, work mobile phone, t shirt for my dad’s birthday, and my nan’s power of attorney paperwork.

StillMedusa · 26/12/2021 18:58

Our old cat once sauntered in on a sunday afternoon with a huge slice of beef ..hot, in gravy. We didn't like to mention it to the neighbours!

Another time my Mum had cooked a chicken and it was on the side while she put the washing out... came back a few mins later to a carcass and a spherical cat!

My dear oldest cat.. a tiny 5 pound mini cat, was a fabulous thief. And loved pasta and pizza... she must have swiped SO many pieces over the years, and in fact managed to steal a piece just two days before she died (of a stroke..not pizza!)

Brigante9 · 26/12/2021 19:41

Puppy just ate a dropped shallot.

The cat once brought a packet of bacon home, then a whole roast chicken the next week. I have no idea hope got it over the fence.

Lizlou85 · 26/12/2021 20:18

Christmas 2020 our Schnauzer snuck in to the dinning room and ate a 1/4 of a Turkey. The turkey had been cooked the day before and carved so thankfully still some safely out the way for the humans. She looked please with herself but regretted it when she saw there was a cheese board and salmon at tea time and she didn't get any.

onlyhereforthefood · 26/12/2021 20:19

my old cat ate an entire jam roly poly

he also demolished a 6 year old's birthday cake...

just as well he was cute!

OrangeBananaFish · 26/12/2021 20:31

I was sat down to eat my steak that DH had cooked. Had taken a couple of bites and the cat jumped up and swiped the steak off my plate. I got up to chase him, he ran away leaving the steak in the middle of the floor which the dog then ate.

DH gave me half of his steak.

alwayswrighty · 26/12/2021 20:35

My eldest staffie has stolen 2 mince pies from my daughters hand and 2 Easter eggs and scoffed them. Now we are really careful where we put food, but she's a naughty bully!

eosmum · 26/12/2021 20:40

Our new dishwasher opens about 2 inches at the end of the cycle, DDog has learned to open the door and climb onto the counters, walk to the hob and ate two lovely ribeye steaks from the frying pan last week. He also ate bolognese, curry, stirfry from pots on the cooker other days until we figured out how he was doing it.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 26/12/2021 20:55

I had a cat as a teen who used to bring home all sorts of stuff. I remember a whole jacket potato wrapped in foil, half an onion and a grilled half chicken.

He also started bringing home baby socks. No idea where they came from!

savagebaggagemaster · 26/12/2021 21:43

My Turkish van cat is a greedy puss. He managed to open 3 windows of the dc advent calendar and eat the chocolate. Luckily it was a very small amount so not toxic but ds wasn't too impressed. He will eat anything he can get his paws on so we have to be very vigilant!

savagebaggagemaster · 26/12/2021 21:46
