Christmas gifts from work

As I tuck into my solitary quality street from the box that my team of 15 have to share which was a gift from my employer, I'm wondering, does anyone get christmas gifts/bonus's from work anymore??

OP posts:
TheCreamCaker · 24/12/2021 09:27

My husband's workplace (20 men), for the past 6 years, has given them £100 Tesco gift card, which was very handy. This year, they said they can't afford it - despite the 3 bosses having brand-new cars. The workers didn't get so much as a fiver each. Tight bastards.

Kshhuxnxk · 24/12/2021 09:29

Yes. My boss bought me a bottle of wine and bought her nicer wine! I bought my team a box of chocolates each. My team club together to buy me something which is lovely but unnecessary.

nordica · 24/12/2021 09:32

Small business and I wfh permanently so the gift arrived in the post... a novelty mug in a grey plastic packaging directly from China. It's definitely the thought that counts though but almost wish they'd just sent a £10 Amazon voucher or something 😏

chocolates/biscuits - to share

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 24/12/2021 09:34

@Kshhuxnxk I bought some goodies for the team to share, no personal presents.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/12/2021 09:37

out of our own team of 5, 3 gave presents, but 2 didnt

The company I work for gives a weeks wages as a Christmas bonus (BUT it's advertised as part of your salary when you apply, so is it really a bonus?). However, on this year's email saying when we would get it, it said "legacy associates" which makes me think newer employees no longer get this bonus.

From my boss I had a parcel arrive with sone after eights, a small bottle of wine, a cook book, a couple of Malteser Reindeers and some Christmas glasses (as in the sort you wear). We also got a £30 voucher each for cote de something or other to order some food. At a team meeting just before the WFH order came back in, we got a gingerbread house building kit, a chocolate Santa and a load of little chocolates too.

Oh and as a team we did this thing where we all made a 15 second video to say which associate inspired us and why, which is a nice idea. We are part of a global business with tens of thousands of employees across the world. The GM of our UK business said I was the person who inspired him (I'm literally bottom of the food chain - there is no-one in the business at a lower level than me). That meant more to me than any of the gifts!

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/12/2021 09:41

We normally get things like wine chocolate or bath smellies One year I got an orchid plant and I think a mug to use at work with my name on
But they do pay for a night out and I don’t have to work between Christmas and new year

MummyInTheNecropolis · 24/12/2021 09:41

I got a l’occitane gift set and a box of chocs from my phase leader, I got her a gift too. I’m a teacher so no bonus but lots of lovely gifts from the children and their families which I love getting and am so grateful for. Lots of wine, Prosecco, chocolates, biscuits and smellies, all of which will be used/consumed over the next week or so. Oh and a fantastic Italian food hamper from one family which I’m already working my way through! Plus John Lewis vouchers which will be spent in the January sales.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 24/12/2021 09:43

Oh plus 2 weeks off over Christmas of course, a major perk of the job!

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 24/12/2021 09:44

I work in the domestic sector, (housekeeping/nannying/house management etc), and have been fortunate to have some incredibly generous employers over the years. Current employer gives an extra months wages in cash, plus a personal present, (often jewellery etc). They also buy hugely generous gifts for all their employee's children. I am very lucky I know; it's lovely to feel so appreciated.

Chemenger · 24/12/2021 09:44

I work in a university now so no. When I worked in industry we used to get a random selection of food and drink - chocolates, wine etc. Most memorably we once got a fresh pineapple, I went on holiday before it arrived so it sat on my desk in a very hot office for a week and a half, when I came back it was inedible and stinking.

MrsTimRiggins · 24/12/2021 09:45

Previous employer, I used to get between £400 and £600 as a Christmas bonus, plus a few bottles of booze and they’d pay for our Christmas do as well. Add to that the gifts my customers used to buy me, and Christmas was certainly a good time to work there! Used to get all sorts from my customers, the standard booze, chocolates etc but examples of slightly more unusual gifts; one gave me a roll bar for my truck which i’d mentioned I wanted to get one year and another bought me a new tv as I’d complained mine broke a couple of weeks before! I did do a lot for them and it was a friendly relationship rather than purely professional and serious but still!
Current employer, I got £155 last year, and nothing this year. Not sure if that’s because they’re just not doing bonuses this year or whether I’ve been left off as I’m on maternity (which would be a touch unfair, I only went off in November!)

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 24/12/2021 09:45

I chip in £20 for a gift for the secretary. I don't get a Christmas bonus or gift though. When in the office the bosses would normally buy chocolate and mince pies etc on the last day but obviously not at the moment.

Most of my jobs have been similar. You might buy something for your secretary but there isn't a Christmas bonus. Maybe one place did a small bonus in your December pay, I think it was £100, one small firm the boss bought everyone a bottle of wine, another bigger place the manager bought everyone an advent calendar.

When my DH was a postie he used to get a Christmas bonus paid in stamps, we were still using them up years after he left!

Hippywannabe · 24/12/2021 09:48

Academy trust-paid for school Xmas day(we all had to help with serving so by the time we had finished we only had 15 minutes lunh break to eat it but was lovely t see their faces with their crackers and hats).
Bottle of wine from the Head, she pays for that.
Bag of presents from the children, vastly down on previous years-I know that because I have had this class before but Covid hit us hard through December and parents are struggling.
Best present? I genuinely believe we will back together in the classroom on the 4th unlike last year!!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/12/2021 09:52

The company I'm working with atm, sent all it's employees a hamper. They also sent a smaller one to us temps, which I thought was a lovely thing to do. A day after that I got a gift from the temping agency of chocolates, wine and a £200 payment into my account. When I worked for 12 years for a well known luxury handbag maker we got nothing.

WeAllHaveWings · 24/12/2021 09:52

Not usually, but last 2 years we have all had £50 to spend in the staff shop instead of the Christmas party that only a handful of people go to.

There is a bit of a social clique with longer term employees (15 years plus) and they also invite their ex employees mates (who pay for themselves) to catch up. It has morphed from the company Christmas party to their party where, of course, anyone is more than welcome to "join them".

TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 24/12/2021 09:52

I think it used to be that Christmas gifts from an employer weren’t taxable, but now they are treated as a taxable benefit if above a certain value.

We get 2 separate £50 vouchers from different departments, so I’m guessing £50 is the tax limit.

lastqueenofscotland · 24/12/2021 09:56

We get Amazon vouchers

When I worked in London we got large 4/5 figure bonuses. Those were the days!

PangolinPie · 24/12/2021 09:57

Was that REALLY necessary @Kshhuxnxk?

PangolinPie · 24/12/2021 09:57

Your comment about tax

WeeFae · 24/12/2021 09:59

My boss took us all out to a lovely little pizza place, treated us all to pizza, prosecco and cocktails. It was lovely, and we are just a small team of 5.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 24/12/2021 09:59

I work in a school, so no "official" gift or bonus. But the SENCO (who's my line manager) got all of us TA a pair of socks and a bath bomb. I have presents from most of the other staff in my year group, and some from children too (including an orchid which I'm trying not to kill).

My mum is on a placement for a course she's doing and got an email about a Christmas bonus. She assumed she wouldn't get it because she's unpaid on her placement, but she got £100! So she's very excited.

WeeFae · 24/12/2021 10:00

We work for a charity, so don't get bonuses/gifts etc so the above treat was from our boss herself.

Alwaysconfuddled · 24/12/2021 10:04

We get notified of any promotions or pay rises at the end of the year so sort of like a Christmas gift, I got a pay rise.
