When Rando members of the public become part of the police and can go to suspects houses to talk to them.

Watching a show on Netflix. Woman goes back to old town after her parents are murdered and then a series of murders happen. She becomes buddy buddy with the local cop and then goes to all the interrogations, suspects homes, fucking joined them all in a rescue mission.

Drives me bonkers when they do this!

In hollyoaks where everyone can just become a teacher or a nurse

Scenes you'll never see on TV:
Woman with enormous bump is having dramatic late night discussion with partner. Suddenly she claps her hand to her stomach and gasps:
"Dave, I think it's the baby........it's coming!!!"
"OMG, do you need me to drive immediately at reckless speeds to hospital with a concerned expression!"
"No, I'd like you to try and find the number of the hospital maternity unit for me and then dig out the overnight bag I packed last week and put a couple of Tracker bars and today's crossword in it. I'll do the washing up while I'm on hold."
.....five minutes on hold later....
"OK, she says to take two paracetamol, have a nice bath and come in when contractions are X minutes apart, probably tomorrow morning. I'll put the kettle on and we could catch up with last week's University Challenge. That reminds me, I must text Angie to tell her I can't meet her at Starbucks tomorrow."

@IAmSantaOhYesIAm

The fact that In hospital dramas there’s no admin or support staff.
See also legal dramas.

Stacey in eastenders years ago suddenly appearing in a freshly decorated and furnished flat. Nobody mentioned it at all.

And none of the characters would be able to afford to live in "Walford" anyway.

Someone answers the door to a pair of police officers:
"Mrs Histrionics?"
"Yes?"
"Can we come in, there's something we need to talk to you about."
"Oh my god, he's DEAD, isn't he?"
"Maybe we can sit down and-"
"JUST TELL ME!"
(Police officer sighs and nods sadly)
"I'm afraid so."
"WAAAAAHHHHH NOOOOOO" (slides down a wall onto the floor and sobs in a suspiciously dry-eyed way).

Woman is hurriedly throwing clothes into a suitcase so she can leave her abusive husband, when said husband arrives home from work early and catches her at it. They both stare at the open suitcase for a bit, and then the wife claims she was "having a clear-out".

Someone is driving somewhere after having an upsetting experience, but they are still so upset that they have to pull over into a lay-by so that they can scream and thump the steering wheel.

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/12/2021 10:03

@QOD

Sex scenes where they’ve been out all day, probably had loads of wees and maybe a sneaky poo then of course spent 4 hrs running from the mob but then peel all their clothes off and have rampant sex Id be peeling my knickers off in a more literal way
🤣
BiscuitLover3678 · 24/12/2021 10:06

Another one is not eating or eating absolute trash (Gilmore girls!) And they still look slim and reasonably healthy

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/12/2021 10:06

And not constipated

tectonicplates · 24/12/2021 10:09

And nobody ever has a UTI.

GreenWhiteViolet · 24/12/2021 10:09

Unrealistic makeup. Just woken up in the morning? Fleeing from zombies? Been marooned on an island for a decade? It doesn't matter, your makeup will be perfect. And I'm not talking about natural-look makeup to make the actress look better on camera. It's deliberately obvious and just silly.

thereisonlyoneofme · 24/12/2021 10:11

Has anyone mentioned the fact that when a character is in hospital there are n o other patients in the ward !

Exactly this. No mum ever says "oh stuff it its oven chips for tea ". They always create something fabulous with pasta and a massive salad
bevelino · 24/12/2021 10:17

Call the Midwife where it looks like they use the same birth scene and baby in every episode.

Also women perfectly made up women will always wear short shorts and a spaghetti strap top to flee zombies, go caving with sharks or monsters, or climb mountains (or similar activities). Male companions must wear full length jeans, tee-shirt and flannel long sleeved shirt.
nordica · 24/12/2021 10:26

Women work in jobs where it's likely they'll be chasing after criminals or stand up all day working in a hospital, but always wear super high heels for work.

TyrannosaurusRights · 24/12/2021 10:47

@Cosywosy

In US films and TV shows characters seem to drink and drive. Drive to a bar, have a few (or more) drinks then drive home. Seems bizarre and I assume illegal in the real world.
Illegal yes, but really normalised in some parts of the states. Road safety isn’t as big a thing there - some areas still don’t have seatbelt or bike helmet legislation for example. Drink driving wise I’d say outside of the dry states and major cities it’s equivalent to 70’s Britain in terms of attitude. Totally normal to go out and have a few drinks then drive home.
Animood · 24/12/2021 12:09

@Lilyargin

When the whole premise of the drama is about women being frightened/stalked/threatened/murdered/there's a serial killer/it's the husband/boyfriend etc etc. Stop making it into entertainment. Drives me mad. And it's so prevalent.
Yeah I can't fucking stand this. I avoid everything like this- too close to home.
Animood · 24/12/2021 12:14

When a woman is about to have sex they never ever have their period.

This is one of the reasons I loved htgawm and Viola Davis. At the end of the day or when the character was going through shit the wig and eyebrows came off, as they would in real life.
PickledPeppa · 24/12/2021 13:30

@MirthlessChuckle

Has anyone else ever binged on NCIS? It's wonderfully stupid and one of my favourite shows - they do the coffee cup thing all the time, and the perfectly well behave children thing. But my biggest pet peeve is that they clearly don't know how to write characters out of a series, so they kill them!

They did this early on with one character and it was meaningful, but after endless loved ones and colleagues being butchered on an almost weekly basis, you'd think they'd all be looking into new careers.

There were some exceptions of course: a few people they obviously wanted to be able to come back and guest star, so out of nowhere they just move to another country for no obvious reasons. And one character simply vanished at the end of a series without any mention again.

But mostly just murder after murder.

Ah it's wonderful. Really cheesy garbage Grin

And the infamous scene where Abby needs help to hack into a computer system, so McGee jumps in and types on the same keyboard - because that will clearly speed things up. Confused
stupiduser · 24/12/2021 13:36

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz the one that always annoyed me was in home and away VJ had a huge story line about being deaf as a baby and getting hearing aids etc then he disappeared for a while came back grown up and fully hearing

Kanaloa · 24/12/2021 13:41

@SuspiciousScully

I'll admit I have only read half the replies so this might already have been mentioned but I get so annoyed by how everyone in film and TV seems to know the magic spot on someone's head and the right amount of force to use to knock people unconscious.

Characters are constantly 'knocking out' other people. They might knock out the bad guy (because they're a 'goodie' so wouldn't kill them but they need to be taken out of the action for a while) or - quite often - they knock out someone on their own side in order to 'protect' them from something.

They never hit the head too softly and just get an, 'Ow, what the fuck did you do that for??' in response. And they never do it too hard and accidentally kill the person or leave them with brain damage. No, no - always the magic hit that renders someone unconscious!

This is lampshaded in South Park when Cartman decides he needs to ‘get rid’ of Kyle for a bit. He gets a bit of pipe, bonks him over the head, and Kyle turns around and goes ‘ow! What are you doing?’

It made me laugh thinking of all the times on various shows I’ve watched someone magically sink to the ground after one bash on the head.

Gartanbou · 24/12/2021 13:46

I always liked the scene in Austin powers where there's an assassination attempt with a shoe.

"Ow that really really hurt! Who throws a shoe?"

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 24/12/2021 13:49

GPs who can diagnose, treat, perform any sort of test and even carry out surgery from their treatment room. Oh and have any result back the next morning. Plus they often work in the hospital and can carry out any major surgery.

The Doctor in Neighbours who was always on duty in the hospital when another character was brought in. He always dealt with their condition whether they were in labour or having a heart attack.
