Last year we had no option but to go first thing christmas eve and buy our food (covid). I think it's made me so laid back about it this year as, actually, ly we got everything we needed, in one supermarket, and it wasnt busy.

So I'm just going to try the same thing again.

We are fairly relaxed about what we have - ideally Turkey and all the trimmings but if they've ran out, well, we will have beef. And if theres no traditional trimmings we will have something else.

Previous years I have been early Christmas Eve and it has been absolutely fine. Only sorted things earlier this year due to the possibility of self isolation. Just have to collect turkey tomorrow then can pull up the drawbridge!

ReginaaPhalange · 22/12/2021 22:36

Did ours yesterday. Went onto our Asda click and collect order to add something else in and £30 of items were suddenly out of stock, so went to Tesco and got the lot. It was heaving! Including an older gent stocking up on toilet roll and declared in the pasta aisle "well you never know what other restrictions that witch in parliament is going to impose next, so I'm stocking up"......!! Hmm

I did get everything I needed and cancelled the Asda slot, but I imagine it's gunna get busier tomorrow and Friday!

I've got a 10 inch pizza from Sainsbury's. I can't cook and Sunday dinner ready meals are awful.

bert3400 · 22/12/2021 22:50

We are flying in from overseas tomorrow to our holiday cottage, on route we are picking up our click and collect shopping - I'm so excited about all the food I have missed for the last 2 years since we moved abroad, never mind all the Christmas food....oh and I get to see my mum and dad too Grin - so damn excited 😊

RedSoloCup · 22/12/2021 23:04

I work work in a local co-op and we have loads of turkeys veg potatoes everything all delivered fresh today 😁

delilahbucket · 22/12/2021 23:21

Meat all pre-ordered from the butchers and seafood from the fishmongers to collect Christmas Eve. Shopping getting delivered tomorrow evening, same as every year, giving us Christmas Eve to mop up anything missing like the cranberry sauce that I forgot to order and it's now too late to add on

DontGiveAFlyingFig · 23/12/2021 06:52

DH and youngest teenager is going today, they will be armed with a menu plan and list.

To be honest it's nice for someone else to have the responsibility of it all, I bet he remembers the booze and forgets the turkey WinkGrin

SpookyScarySkeletons · 23/12/2021 09:59

DH is going first thing Christmas Eve. Already got Turkey, stuffing, sausage meat, chipolatas and streaky bacon oh and the parsnips and sprouts. So hopefully should be able to get everything else.

justaddcandlelight · 23/12/2021 10:05

I'm going tomorrow. I've not had a problem before with getting things I need. I do have Ed have the turkey already.

that's good to know.

DH went to Aldi yesterday - only so early because we're a bit twitchy in case we test positive. The only thing they were short of was smoked salmon, so we are muddling through with gravadlax Grin.

poorbuthappy · 23/12/2021 10:21

We went to Aldi at 7am this morning.
The only thing they were short of was a choice of desserts. Still managed to buy 3 though.
Although DH did do a veg shop yesterday cos he was worried they wouldn't have the choice. But they did.

MsEmmeline · 23/12/2021 10:26

3 is the right number of Christmas desserts 😄.

Squirrelblanket · 23/12/2021 11:21

I had been planning to do mine this morning but we ran out of a lot of household basics by Monday so I went early Tuesday morning. Got everything I needed and the dates were all fine.

Moonface123 · 23/12/2021 11:31

l work in a supermarket, the best time to shop in my opinion is xmas eve, the food is fresher as it comes in every night, l do it every year and always manage to get what l want, today l have been doing the online picking, we were in at 4.00 am, the huge night team are there till 7.00am so already you probably have well over 100 staff on shop floor, night team are still trying to put the overnight deleiveries on the shelves, isles are full of cages, yet so many customers think its a good time to shop, when actually you cant move. Dot.com finished picking at 10.30, night team had long gone, and store was quietest it had been all morning. So my advice would be mid day onwards best time to shop, not early hours of the morning, and l find xmas eve the quietest day as most people have done their shopping by then.

bippityboppity87 · 23/12/2021 11:33

I did mine this morning. I went to Asda at about 6:30am. It was like ghost town, probably saw about 4 other customers the whole time I was there and fully stocked shelves. It was quite nice actually!

bippityboppity87 · 23/12/2021 11:36

I came to this conclusion too haha. I have a chocolate Yule log, cheese cake and Vienetta and way too many varieties of cheese
Nosnowthisyear · 23/12/2021 11:40

I’ve got everything except the turkey! They were the wrong size and date at Tesco so going to try Morrison’s later.

MadisonAvenue · 23/12/2021 11:46

I’ve had my Tesco delivery this morning but I’ve still got to go shopping because some of the basics were out of stock with no suitable substitutions available. No bread (Hovis medium FFS), bread rolls, bananas, cream, cucumber…

PineConeWar · 23/12/2021 11:46

I've got nothing yet! I'm going tomorrow when DH has finished work and I can take the car. I'm not dragging the DC in on the bus to do the big food shop in the city centre.

garlictwist · 23/12/2021 11:58

We always just go to the supermarket on christmas eve. It's never busy and we can always get what we want.

Orreries · 23/12/2021 12:00

Christmas Eve.I don’t really get the panic.
