Those with tinnitus - how many 'sounds' do you have?

Whatdoyawannado · 21/12/2021 13:08

Others who suffer from this seem to only have one 'sound' to deal with. I have about 4 and developed a new one over the last few days. I wish it would stop moving the goalposts. I was starting to adjust and 'live with it', now it's just horrendous all over again.

Aw that is tough. I have one sound, kind of like a hissing. Some days are easier to manage than others. I’ve just started to do a bit of meditation. Hopefully that will help. I spoke with a lady who has tinnitus for more than 10 years. She said she is hardly ever aware of it now. That’s the dream.

TellingBone · 21/12/2021 13:16

One constant sound and an occasional additional one.

The constant [over ten years now!] is a sort of high pitched 'white noise' like a radio out of tune, and when I get the additional one that's a lower continuous sort of musical note which adds to the general joy of it all.

Confused

This is what I have. Constant high pitched then like a low droning hum (which I kept thinking was a car engine/helicopter) until it clicked

Mines also been over 10 years. Joyous!

ShinyHappyPoster · 21/12/2021 13:18

It changes. I've never counted but at least three. Sometimes only one. Other times, more. More tends to coincide with being stressed or rundown. It's called a tinnitus spike and will usually adjust again. Try not to worry that it will stay like this. Tinnitus is quite a fluid condition so it might revert back to the previous noise and volume.

Snailhaterz2 · 21/12/2021 13:30

One constant: a permanent rustling/high static (like a radio not quite being on-station). There all the time, but much more noticeable when I'm stressed.

crj123 · 21/12/2021 13:33

Rumbling. I hate this one.
High- pitched squeeeeeee noise
Drumming occasionally

They rotate and I have no idea why, any suggestions very gratefully received. I don't think people without it realise what a cock it is

Whatdoyawannado · 21/12/2021 13:40

The new one sounds like a low rumbling like a low flying helicopter. I'm finding it much more bothersome than the usual higher pitched/musical ones. My head feels like it's vibrating with the sound! It might be due to stress, DC tested positive for covid three weeks ago and now have flu!

Normally its a high pitched EEEEEEE, it went a few months ago and I had blissful silence but now its back.

Are you sure thats tinnitus and only in your head? Some parts of the country get a low pitched noise called The Hum.

Tenpintonpin · 21/12/2021 14:02

Have you recently been boosted? I developed permanent tinnitus when I caught Covid in 2020; I've just had a booster (first exposure to Pfizer jab) and it's caused my tinnitus to flare like crazy, with a new rumbling tone.

Witheringtong · 21/12/2021 14:05

I just had the booster!

CherryRedDMs · 21/12/2021 14:06

I have two, but one is pulsatile tinnitus and the other is normal. I don’t notice either but I’ve had them for 34 years.

Ginqueen456 · 21/12/2021 14:06

Mine has been on and off since I was a child(in my 30s now). My main noise is like I can hear my own heartbeat, less often I'll get a low level ringing. It was a lot worse when I had glue ear, luckily it has eased a lot after I had a gromit put in.

Whatdoyawannado · 21/12/2021 14:06

I know the usual noises are in my head, not completely sure the new low rumbling is as when I block my ears I can hear the usual sounds but not the new one. It's very distracting whatever it is! I can usually sleep fine with my usual noises but I couldn't settle at all last night.

@Tenpintonpin no booster yet, I had my vaccinations late for various reasons so won't be due booster until start of Feb at the earliest. DC and DH have just had covid and I managed to avoid it!

I just have a ringing sound (it's been about seven years) - I really hope I don't get more!

TheRealMrsJelly · 21/12/2021 15:23

Constant one I've had since forever, is a high bell ringing 'eeee' sound. I don't really hear it unless I think about it. Sometimes (like right now) a bigger, deeper ringing sound kicks in (feels like I've gone deaf for a second when it happens) and that's very loud. It can feel like it's physical, like it's grating on my spine, not sure how else to describe it.

I occasionally get a low hum, like a car engine running/helicopter hovering, it's awful, but doesn't last long and only happens when I'm stressed, thankfully. Hopefully it's the same for you.

Sideswiped · 21/12/2021 15:27

Mine started off as a pure, quite high-pitched tone. (In one ear only.)
After about twenty years it developed a warble, but was still the same pitch.
The other ear sometimes joins in too, with a lower warble. (Sometimes they merge so it's like it's coming from the middle of my head IYSWIM.)
Occasionally I also get pulsatile tinnitus.
I avoid total silence when I'm not busy as I find it more intrusive.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/12/2021 15:28

I have 2 or 3 low tone rumbling ones which are constant and intermittently every few days a high pitched alarm.

Derrymum123 · 21/12/2021 15:31

Just one low, white noise type that changes volume and lasts for a few days then goes, only to return, for no particular reason, when I least expect it.

whitewashing · 21/12/2021 16:13

Like a strong wind blowing

SkankingMopoke · 21/12/2021 16:24

I mostly get the high pitched EEEEE sound, but I'm also occasionally treated to pulsatile tinnitus. I've had tinnitus for as long as I can remember, and have childhood memories of finding it deafening at times. These days life is rarely quiet enough to hear it.

awaynboilyurheid · 21/12/2021 16:35

Just one noise, a hissing noise constantly for coming up to a year now.

Was so hard to adjust to at first, really struggled for about two months then found strategies to help me sleep.

Occasionally I have had it suddenly change to a much higher pitch and I’m always v worried and think dear god don’t tell me this is a new one!

Thankfully it settles again back to the noisy hiss I have become accustomed too, it’s such a horrible condition.

I have other health issues but if I could get rid of one of them it would be this in a heartbeat.

AdaColeman · 21/12/2021 17:06

Years ago I only had one sound, a continuous hissing.

But gradually other sounds have entered, one like a male voice choir humming or a few notes being repeatedly played on a church organ mainly on my left side.
Then on my right side I have a noise like old machinery clunking round, like the thump of a damaged water wheel. These are sometimes joined by high pitched squeals.

I've had them for years now, always much worse when I am stressed or worried, I can't say that I've got used to them. Once every few months, I wake to a few moments of total silence, and think what bliss it is, before the hissing clunking humming noises start up again.

Hen2018 · 21/12/2021 17:33

4, though rarely all the time.

Right ear has a medium pitch hiss (constant)

Left ear has a higher pitched hiss (constant) with an occasional “siren”. Like a police car but the nees and the naas aren’t evenly spaced!
It’s new noise this year is to go Wheeeeeeeee, getting higher in pitch. This is incredibly loud but lasts only a few seconds, every few days.
