Help me pick some wine

Calling all wine lovers!
I need to buy a bottle of wine as a gift for someone but I am not a wine drinker so I am clueless. Can folks suggest a nice and relatively in-expensive white or red wine please?

Don't buy white wine in the uk unless you have ££ to spend. It's dreadful stuff especially produced for export.
Whith red, you can never go wrong with a chianti ... but again they are pricy!

WingBingo · 21/12/2021 07:35

@Blueuggboots is onto something!

Both the red and white 19 Crimes are bloody lovely!

PickAChew · 21/12/2021 07:36

The last time I had a 19 crimes wine, it gave me rotten guts.

And I hate fizz. I've had a bottle of prosecco sitting untouched for a year.

I'm a big fan of coop Pure Trapiche Malbec - Malbec us often a safe bet at that price, anyhow. Sainsburys taste the difference wines are often good, too.

M&S wine in the £8-10 range tends to be decent.

It totally depends on their taste - as a PP has said fizz is a good choice for Christmas.

I hate people buying me wine. It's always wrong. I like white but only Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. Hate hate hate Chardonnay. Can't stomach red as it gives me an awful headache. Rose is nice but only if it's a dry rose like a Pinot blush.

I used to like barefoot Malbec before I switched to flavoured gins and and vodkas. But the best way to pick a wine is probably for you to try some in a pub. You will hate them accurately being unbiased

I like Jam Shed for red. Only about £7

Ekofisk · 21/12/2021 08:16

Jam Shed do a Malbec and a Shiraz - the Shiraz is very rich and plummy, almost like a port.

Albarino from aldi is my favourite white wine, 6.99. Lidl also do a good chablis, or chianti classic for red.

Oh 19 crimes is awful (IMO). Good story about the name but for ne, it ends there.

Hoorayhenryyah · 21/12/2021 10:40

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I went with the idea of a bottle of fizz, thought it a safer bet plus most folk like a glass of bubbles at Xmas. Hopefully this thread helps anyone else who’s looking to buy wine but is clueless like me 😆
