Help me pick some wine

Calling all wine lovers!
I need to buy a bottle of wine as a gift for someone but I am not a wine drinker so I am clueless. Can folks suggest a nice and relatively in-expensive white or red wine please?

For red wine, Merlot, Malbec, no Zinfandel or Shiraz. Drinkable white wine is more expensive than red.

I like mine in a bottle, with a label on the front, otherwise I’m not too picky!

Fatandfifty49 · 21/12/2021 06:59

I don't mind if the label has come off i still drink it Grin

I wouldn't randomly buy 'white or red' wine unless you know what they like, as people frequently only drink one of the two.

In your case, I'd buy a bottle of fizz, because it's festive, and even if people rarely drink wine, they often like to have/share a bottle of fizz at Christmas or New Year. Is also good for regifting.

Lots of offers in the supermarkets at the moment. Obviously don't go for bargain basement prosecco unless you're on a really tight budget, but there's lots of good cavas for about £8, various Cremants (like Champagne but produced in other parts of France, just as nice and much cheaper) for £10-12, Morrisons have The Best English Sparkling wine, which is very well regarded on offer for £18, or obviously you have champagne if you have a larger budget. Unless you know the recipient hates fizzy wine, I'd go for one of those.

I agree with this. I'm a red, white and rosé drinker but I'm quite particular so regift a lot that I'm given!

I find Yellow Tail brand Malbec very drinkable. It has the advantage of a distinctive label so I can remember what it is for next time.

Well I like it, and they seem to shift a lot of the stuff so me and my poor palate are clearly in good company.

Cheers.

Fatandfifty49 · 21/12/2021 07:08

White tends to be more popular. A lot of people don't like red. Personally, I'll drink both.

For whites, go for something in the Marlborough Valley, New Zealand. Tikki Ridge is one that stands out.

For reds, I agree that merlot and malbec is nice. Beefteak Malbec is very drinkable.

eyeoresancerre · 21/12/2021 07:09

Oyster Bay whites are lovely and easy drinking especially the Sauvignon Blanc. Think it's £12 but often on offer for £10.

DeloriesGinBitch · 21/12/2021 07:11

It’s pretty damn harsh viques

Ekofisk · 21/12/2021 07:12

I’d suggest a Chablis for white or a Cremant if you’re looking for fizz. I don’t drink much red but like the occasional Malbec.

VerbenaGirl · 21/12/2021 07:17

Tesco Finest Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is very good, or Waitrose Cremant de Loire for fizz. Paco & Lola Tempranillo is a nice red. Both DH and I enjoy all of these, despite having quite different tastes.

DeloriesGinBitch · 21/12/2021 07:19

No wait, I’m thinking about a different yellow tail brand I had. Not Malbec

MrsDThomas · 21/12/2021 07:20

Whites. I only drink pinot. But not all pinots are nice. Ive tried £10 bottles and always go back to my trusted Tesco brand at just under £5.

Wasn’t a red drinker at all until 2 years ago. I’ll happily drink merlot but malbec is my choice. Argentina.

Trivento (any supermarket) and Grand Lomo.

I also drunk Aldis, they have an amazing selection

IKnowAPlace · 21/12/2021 07:24

M&S has some lovely wines. Their standard prosecco is nice, they have a great malbec and most pinot grigio I've had from there has been great.

forressttheouut · 21/12/2021 07:25

would agree a fizz is a safe option if you don't know what colour they usually drink at home.
I don't know much about white wine but would agree malbecs are a safe bet for red because they are generally easy drinking. Italian reds such as chianti or primitivo is also often pretty safe in terms of being nice but unoffensive. M&S have a couple of nice chiantis currently.

There's a lot of very nice australian cabernet sauvignons but these are a bit more hit and miss unless you know exactly what type of wine they like.

normanthegonk · 21/12/2021 07:25

chapel down.....English sparkling. ....its delicious. .I was surprised!

Blueuggboots · 21/12/2021 07:27

This is lovely red wine!

DeloriesGinBitch · 21/12/2021 07:30

I’m sorry viques

RJnomore1 · 21/12/2021 07:31

Honestly, it’s such a personal choice you’re better just picking a label you like. I wouldn’t be keen on anything mentioned (nice Malbec perhaps!) - I drink white but don’t like new world or Sauvignon, I prefer an Italian gavi or a fiano personally. However I’d drink whatever you bought and be chuffed you thought of me.
