Dessert ideas for Christmas meal. Cheesecake?

SnowIsInTheAir · 20/12/2021 18:10

What are your alternative desserts for your Christmas meal. We won't be having turkey and nobody in the extended family likes mince pies or Christmas pudding.
What would you serve?
They like cheesecake - how could I make it Christmassy?

Chocolate clementine cake. Like a giant Jaffa cake.

@VanillaYuletide oh god yes because with ‘helpers’ it takes ages! I have seen simpler recipes for them and the one I use does seem to go on forever but I always try to do it on 23rd and have it Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Did this one on Saturday as had in laws coming on Sunday.

Trifle is nice.
This year is winter fruit compote with homemade celebration ice-cream.

My mum makes a delicious choux wreath, with salted caramel cream and chocolate on the top-it's like a giant profiterole.

RedRobin100 · 20/12/2021 21:29

I’m making rasp and dark choc cheesecake and a lemon meringue.
Maybe also buy a Yule log.
Feel like I need a 4th as some extra folk coming and I hate my mums trifle

RedRobin100 · 20/12/2021 21:29

Ooohhh maybe I’ll also do an apple crumble.. yum

rosiebl · 20/12/2021 21:35

Pear and Amaretto cheesecake. So delicious

Frizzyfrizz · 20/12/2021 21:41

Thinking sticky toffee pudding in a pudding mold so looks like Xmas pudding. Not sure though

DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/12/2021 22:04

I can never think about Nigella's ice cream cake (and sauce) without remembering the year my sister made it and forgot to defrost before serving. It was so hard (and she so determined) that she put a sharp knife through the cake AND the cake dish while trying to serve it up.

marly2 · 21/12/2021 07:46

Ooh @rosiebl which recipe do you use? That sounds delicious. Maybe I will copy!

loveablequalities · 21/12/2021 07:56

I'm doing a fair few puddings over the next few days. Tonight is a mango and ginger cheesecake, Thursday is tahini and halva brownies, CD is praline meringues and a lemon tart, Monday is chocolate mousse with orange cream, Wednesday is mango sorbet with something I haven't decided on yet.

BBC good food website has loads of reliable recipes. I would check on there for something straight forward.

Happyface120 · 21/12/2021 07:59

We are doing orange panacotta with brandy snaps. Easy to make before, nice and light.. Although everyone here will probably have Christmas pudding as well as panacotta Grin

Bearsbearsbears40 · 21/12/2021 08:05

If you do Instagram, the Jane’s Patisserie account does a lot of cheesecake recipes such as white chocolate and chocolate orange, some of those are very Christmassy. I think I am going to make one of them between Christmas and new year (running out of time to do one before now Wink).

lollipoprainbow · 21/12/2021 08:06

I've got a chocolate Yule log with brandy cream.

I made this the other day- was delicious and easy. I supposed to serve 8, but I think could definitely serve 10- especially after a Christmas dinner!

Doubleraspberry · 21/12/2021 08:11

Nigella’s Yule log is not hard to make, and very forgiving if it does cracks when you roll. It’s very intense, and delicious.

My DH’s family would never forgive me for not making Xmas pudding so that (Delia’s recipe) was steamed weeks ago. I can take it or leave it myself so I’m also doing a Cranberry Curd Tart (from America’s Test Kitchen) and Clementine Ginger Jelly (from Jamie Oliver). The jelly is meant to be served in individual glasses but I’m going to try setting it in a bread tin mould and turning it out so it can be sliced. I’m thinking I will need slightly more gelatin than if I put it in glasses, no?

If I were feeding more people I would do one more dessert, something with chocolate in it, but the crowd I’m feeding (8 in total) isn’t really into chocolate except for one person.

Lots of wonderful ideas here - I may pick one up for Xmas eve dinner, which DH will be cooking with some sort of fish.

Doubleraspberry · 21/12/2021 08:41

One last suggestion from me is this lush pudding DH makes. It’s called trifle but isn’t what you’d think a trifle is!

Such a lot of desserts. I can't do a Yule log as that is FIL's signature Christmas dessert and I don't want to even attempt to compete! It did make me remember he mentioned the battenburg cake by Mary Berry last time we met, so I might try that. Will still need something for the DC as I don't think they'd like coffee and I hate battenburg
I like the idea of sticky toffee pudding, it's ages since I ate that.

Has anyone tried the Mary Berry spiced ginger pudding? Does it taste of ginger as it doesn't seem to have any actual ginger in it Xmas Confused

Reindeer cheesecake. I like that idea!

Have decided on something really easy for Xmas eve dinner - Vanilla Bean Ice Cream with Pedro Ximenez soaked raisins. The raisins are soaking as I write this and I will pick up some posh vanilla ice cream next time I go grocery shopping. I’ll scoop it into glasses and freeze it before dinner and then top it with the raisins at the last minute. Recipe from Delia’s Christmas.

Crankley · 21/12/2021 17:19

I'll be making profiteroles filled with Amaretto cream and fresh raspberries and the tops dipped in caramel. Makes a nice change from the usual chocolate sauce.

Theforest · 21/12/2021 18:34

Have you seen this? I would definitely make this if I didn't already have stuff in already. Not that sophisticated I guess, but everyone would love it. Grin

I make this millionaires bombe every year.

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/millionaires-ice-cream-bombe

It's actually really simple. Takes up a lot of space in freezer once the Maltesers are on but can make in advance.

Obviously only as good as the sum of its parts so use decent ice cream.

WhyDoesItAlways · 21/12/2021 18:56

We're having rocky road cheesecake pudding this year. Not had it before but looks yummy!

Syllabub, with crushed amaretti biscuits.
