Can anyone recommend a kids' comic?

My son has the reading age of a kid between six and seven years old (according to his teacher) but is a couple of years older than this.

I really need to get him reading more to try to increase his reading ability, but although he has loads of books, he has only ever voluntarily read two for pleasure (one on minecraft and one on nerf) so I thought I would try some comics to see if he likes those. Can anyone recommend any?

He likes Nerf, war stuff, minecraft, spies, being active and physical and is also a sensitive soul who likes babies and nature programmes.

Ps any other reading ideas to get him more engaged will be gratefully received!

Check out the Phoenix Comics (I bought on Amazon). DS1 is 7, we got him one of the books for last Christmas and he LOVED it - went off to his room and blitzed it and then begged us for the follow up one.

Beano? Or if he likes that style of writing the captain underpants series is good.

Thesearmsofmine · 20/12/2021 09:52

My 3 boys love the Beano. Also try Dogman books, they have been excellent for my middle son who reading doesn’t come so easily too.

maldivemoment · 20/12/2021 09:52

We subscribe to Aquila for our kids. First News good too, although perhaps not directly related to your sons interests.

maldivemoment · 20/12/2021 09:54

Would second @Thesearmsofmine recommendation of the Dogman books.

museumum · 20/12/2021 09:54

Third recommendation for The Phoenix. Go to their own site, there's a starting offer of 4 issues for £1

My daughter is 7 and is mad about the Beano.

ArsenicNLace · 20/12/2021 10:55

Hi. I had a reluctant reader at that age. I think mildly dyslexic but he's now in his 20's and reads loads now. At that age he loved 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' books. They are set out like a comic with lots of pictures and text.

SnowIsInTheAir · 20/12/2021 12:18

Mine is/was the same. Look at Barrington Stoke, they have books which are written for kids who have difficulty reading. Simplified text but topics which interest older children.
Else, mine liked the Treetops fiction short stories. Walker stories also, they're books with 3 chapters.
Comic wise he likes Tintin, Asterix, Gaston (that's the French name, can't remember the English title) and Leonardo the genius.

We used to get Aquila but it's really not suitable for a child who has difficulty reading, the pages are packed and noisy.

Dogman and Amulet are other comic type stories.

Was going to say Dogman as well.

Mine loves the Phoenix. Someone recommended it to me - I can’t remember who now. It’s properly funny, very modern humour and slightly surreal and silly.

I have another question on this theme. As a child i had twinkle, bunty and misty delivered and loved them. They had proper stories in them.
Is there anything like these magazines available now? Want to order something like this for my 9 year old DD.

Decemberfinances · 20/12/2021 14:57

@arsenicNLace thanks for the reassurance : )

@SnowIsInTheAir thanks for that link! That is brilliant! I will look that up! I love Asterix myself!

Twinkle! I read Twinkle!

And Mandy and Bunty. Loved them at the time but now I can see that the stories were themed on girls sacrificing themselves to 'do good' and make others happy. I wouldn't endorse that message now!

Apart from the usual comics (Buster and Marvel ones) the Discovery Channel ones and BBC Wildlife ones are good if he likes nature and animals.

Della1 · 20/12/2021 17:50

Beano. My six year old loves Beano comics and will read them on his own for hours. I’ve just bought him a subscription for Christmas (he asked for this as his main present). Charity shops often have Beano annuals for £1.

Swirlywoo · 20/12/2021 17:54

Phoenix, Beano, Dogman Smile
