Can anyone recommend a kids' comic?

My son has the reading age of a kid between six and seven years old (according to his teacher) but is a couple of years older than this.

I really need to get him reading more to try to increase his reading ability, but although he has loads of books, he has only ever voluntarily read two for pleasure (one on minecraft and one on nerf) so I thought I would try some comics to see if he likes those. Can anyone recommend any?

He likes Nerf, war stuff, minecraft, spies, being active and physical and is also a sensitive soul who likes babies and nature programmes.

Another vote for phoenix - my DC literally runs to see if it's been delivered! It's nice that it comes weekly, doesn't have 'gifts' attached which detract from the magazine and seem to be suitably random Grin

Another Phoenix fan in this house

Also if you are getting the Beano it’s loads cheaper by subscription and you can usually get a good deal for the first 3 months.

Phoenix and beano! And try 13 storey treehouse books, diary of a wimpy kid and dog man!

The phoenix has lots of spin off books (graphic novels) too so if he gets into reading the comic you can nudge him towards books very gradually.
We listen to a lot of audio books too. Just to embed that idea of stories and shit. (Sometimes I just go one pompous step too far!)

Phoenix is great

Thirtytimesround · 20/12/2021 19:57

The Phoenix and Beano are both great for that age. As are the Alien Adventures books (Project X series).

Personally I would avoid Dogman and Captain Underpants books, they’re written in incorrect spelling to be ‘witty’ 🙄😡🙄 and after reading them ds started spelling things wrong that he previously knew how to spell. So school became skool etc.

My DD (7) loves the Beano.

Pucarbuile · 20/12/2021 21:01

As above, the Beano and Dogman are firm favourites here. Ds recently discovered Bunny vs Monkey and the League of Doom and roars laughing at it.

Pucarbuile · 20/12/2021 21:03

I just reread your description of him, and your ds sounds like a really awesome kid Smile

Stellaris22 · 20/12/2021 21:05

Phoenix is fantastic, my DD enjoys it so much she's even read the full length Mega Robo Bros books because of it.

SummerInSun · 20/12/2021 23:17

Another vote for Phoenix. He'll start reading that and then want the various books along the same lines advertised inside.

RandomDent · 20/12/2021 23:22

My 8 and 12 year olds read Minecraft magazine: minecraftworldmagazine.co.uk/

EmpressCixi · 20/12/2021 23:25

There’s the Diary of a Wimpy Kid...several books that are graphic novels.

Calvin and Hobbes is a classic funny comic about a young boy and his imaginary friend who is a tiger.

Adventures of Tintin books

Avatar the Last Airbender books

Thanks everyone - went into town and bought him the Beano - he loves it - didn't want to go to bed as he was reading it and started again when he woke up! Success! Am going to order him a subscription to this and Phoenix! Feel hopeful for the first time that he might actually start to catch up with peers in reading skills!

Also bought him the Dogman book so he has that too.
