16 year old DS walking home alone at half 8/9 oclock, would you be happy?

So he has always been a stay-at-home gaming type, but has suddenly found a love interest and is now out all the time! So maybe I just need to relax and get used to it. He is planning on leaving his girlfriend's house at half 8 to walk home, and whilst half 8 isn't that late, I'm just feeling a bit twitchy. Would you be ok with your 16 yo walking home at half 8/9? Do I just need to give myself a metaphorical slap?

Yes, you really do

OnlyAFleshWound · 18/12/2021 19:56

Is this a genuine post?

vastgrandupgrade · 18/12/2021 19:56

Yep

HeddaGarbled · 18/12/2021 19:57

This is a reasonable time for a 16 year old to be walking home.

confettiballoons · 18/12/2021 19:57

Lol yes you are being totally ridiculous

MrsAukerman · 18/12/2021 19:57

I was walking home from the pub drunk at 11pm at 16!

GiveMeNovocain · 18/12/2021 19:58

I'd be fine with that. Unless you live in the ganglands of El Salvador? In which case no. Absolutely not

MadameFantabulosa · 18/12/2021 19:58

Jesus, get a grip! He’s old enough to have sex, get married. The DDs used to stay out till Midnight at that age - sometimes we’d meet them at the station, other times they would walk or get the bus home.

rach2713 · 18/12/2021 19:58

I think you do. My 14 year old walks home around that time..

RonniePickering · 18/12/2021 19:58

My 17 year old is walking home from work at 8pm, by herself 😬 I offered to come and collect her and she said no 🤷🏼‍♀️

santaclothes · 18/12/2021 19:59

There are some places I wouldn't walk in broad daylight alone, can you add any context? There is nothing wrong with walking home at 8:30pm under usual circumstances though. No noise cancelling headphones but I'm sure he knows this. At 16 DD was out until 11pm most night of the week.

Rollerbird · 18/12/2021 19:59

I'm not liberal about these things and I would without hesitation

Weihnachtsmarkt · 18/12/2021 19:59

Do you live in a particularly problematic area? Gangs? Knife crime?

If not I would relax.

LittleBabyCheeses · 18/12/2021 19:59

This is genuinely insane.

Clymene · 18/12/2021 19:59

OMG. Get a grip

TaraSiligel · 18/12/2021 19:59

No, I would not be happy about this. Are you able to go and pick him up?

Twixxed · 18/12/2021 20:00

Assuming no LDs or anything else you haven't mentioned, I would definitely be fine with it.

Pinetreesfall · 18/12/2021 20:00

Urm what?!
My 13 year old will happily walk to the shop in the dark at 8.30/9pm. Really unless you live in a gangland I really wouldn't be worried. Do you normally drive him everywhere? You realise he will legally be an adult in not very many months!

pastypirate · 18/12/2021 20:01

Have you got life 360 installed or similar? As long as he keeps in touch it's fine he will be fine.

Flustered4 · 18/12/2021 20:02

LOL that told me!! Fair enough! I'm just not used to him being out and he is really not streetwise! But he won't learn if he doesn't do so I'll chill Grin

My (now) 18 year old had a midnight curfew from 16 on (weekends obvs)
She often did after school stuff when younger which finished 7-8pm. That'd be from about 11-14.
I think his girlfriend might find it a bit weird he has to be home so early tbh.

Have you taught him not to use noise cancellation when he is outside walking? Not just at night, any time of the day. They need to be aware of what is going on around them.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 18/12/2021 20:09

Eldest DD was waking home from evening classes at that age, usually at around 9pm. Eldest DS was working at that age and walking home at gone 10pm when the little Co~Op he worked at closed. They often were out much later on a weekend!

lottiegarbanzo · 18/12/2021 20:09

What? Aren't they commonly out until 11-12pm at weekends at that age?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/12/2021 20:13

I was working as a waitress at that age and walking home at 10/11 alone after my shift! Of course it's fine.
