Getting blood out of white bedding.

Crunchymum · 17/12/2021 09:54

Little one had a nose bleed and its on the new white bedding.

DP helpfully put it straight in the wash (60c)

Is there anyway to get the blood out? It's not much but I'd like to salvage the lovely new bedding.

Sorry to be be clear the bloodstains are still there after washing. My understanding is we should have cool washed first?

Isn't cold water necessary for blood stains?
Bet dh isn't usually so helpful!!

SilverHairedCat · 17/12/2021 09:57

Crap, yes, cool wash was needed. You now need a protein remover and probably bleach....

Actually I've just asked and he said he put it on 20c wash first.

That should have worked shouldn't it?

Bleach? Occasionally DD has period accidents on bedding/pj’s. I use a stain spray (heavily spray), leave for at least 24hr, then put it in a bucket of napisan and leave it for a few days, then bung in the washing machine on intensive which is roughly 3.5hrs. So far that seems to do the trick and that includes on light pastels.

Soak in really salty cold water overnight, then a hot wash.

No, don't do this ^^ Shock
Salt sets the stain

I use hydrogen peroxide for blood stains (it’s rather fascinating watching it bubble). Not sure if it will work on a washed stain, but it maybe worth a shot?

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 17/12/2021 10:10

Vanish soap if there are any bits still left op..

StopGo · 17/12/2021 10:12

An Enzymatic spray might shift the stain. I use a pet stain enzymatic product for doggy accidents and tried on a human blood stain, worked a treat.

Mumoblue · 17/12/2021 10:15

Vanish Powergel usually works for me. I’ve definitely used it on blood before.

itwasntaparty · 17/12/2021 10:21

Did had a nosebleed the other day. I used carpet cleaner and rubbed bio powder on before washing and it all came out.

I don't think you'll have much luck now it's been washed without bleach.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/12/2021 10:34

Ace laundry bleach. It’s hydrogen peroxide. It foams when it comes into contact with blood. It’s fascinating. I put Ace on it and leave it 5mins then wash in a 30’ wash. Always gone.

I always have a bottle in the cupboard.

Redpriestandmozart · 17/12/2021 10:40

I have nose bleeds all the time, mostly at night. Quite by accident, I found the best way to clean, even blood that has been washed before.

During the first lockdown, I kept a bottle of diluted Detol by the sink and after finding a pillowcase with 'cooked' on blood I sprayed it with the Detol, rubbed on some bio washing liquid and fired it into the washing machine and it came out spottlesss.

I have used the same method time and time again, I don't know if it is the combination of the two but it works.

Legdaysucks · 17/12/2021 10:50

Have a child whose nose routinely explodes... Cold water and a good scrub with undiluted fairy washing up liquid and a washing up sponge usually does the trick. When most / all of the stain is gone a squirt of any ol' stain remover and into the wash at 30 degrees. Usually gets the blood out, but might be trickier if it's been washed through now .... Good luck!

minipie · 17/12/2021 10:55

A really good trick for blood is that person’s own saliva rubbed into the stain. Something to do with the enzymes. You can literally watch the blood fading.

Not sure if it works for blood that’s been cooked on though

DustyMaiden · 17/12/2021 11:14

Salt for blood, but probably too late.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 17/12/2021 11:16

I think now that youve done a hot wash you have ''cooked'' it and essentially set the stain. I did this after my niece had a nosebleed and any further attempt left a rusty orange stain.
Doesn't help you now - but for future - soak in cold water or just run the cold tap on the stained part .

RavingAnnie · 17/12/2021 11:23

I second hydrogen peroxide (although stain may have set with hot wash).

For future reference, cold water and a scrub with a soap bar gets all blood out.

@RampantIvy salt does set stains, with one notable exception, blood!

But the hot wash is an absolute no. That would set the stain.

I'd do a cold water soak with salt, then a 30 degree wash with a scoop of Vanish for whites. Ideally then dry on the washing line on a sunny day... (ha, I know it's December 🤣).

RampantIvy · 17/12/2021 11:32

Oh, I didn't know that. Thnk you for putting me right.

Vanish and cold water

Haveacoldnotcovid · 17/12/2021 11:36

If fresh, a cold water salty solution then a wash almost always works. I accidentally also found out that fresh blood can be got out of carpets and fabrics with bicarb and water. Blot the stain, spread the bicarb sprinkle with water leave for 2 mins and scrub. I was sceptical but it was like a miracle!
