Trigger warning. This sounds pretty awful frankly.

The question remains: would you acquit someone famous who you believed had abused children? If not, why do you assume everyone else would?

Of course you would, and should, if the prosecution had failed to demonstrate their guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Which can be very, very difficult.

You can believe that someone committed the crimes they are accused of and still rightly vote not guilty as a member of the jury. The bar in criminal prosecution is high.

Agree. Such an interesting point, and highlights the thought and commitment jurors have to put into a case. Yet acknowledging that the burden of proof rests with the prosecution is different to suggesting a jury will always acquit because they're dazzled by celebrity. (pp "He was popstar royalty people are biased because they are fans it was never going to be a fair trial for the victims.")

@OliviaBensonStabler

Why wait 17 years to report someone for rape.
Seriously? Hmm
Dearblossom · 19/12/2021 22:42

To those questioning the womans texts rather than the stitches from medical report, really?!

I want to say give your heads a wobble and never expect a girlfriend to trust to tell you she has been raped eh! Sheesh, I mean he is known as Mr Big or a tough police Detective from tv, he ran at least one night club in real life as a previous poster mentioned I think (which ended badly in court I believe) and so would clearly of had some heavy contacts too. Poor girl was terrified. Tried to be polite but honest and avoided him thereafter. Stitches vs texts, sheeeeesh.

I've just tried to do a deep dive into American law for bringing a criminal case for rape and its different in different states. NYC is I think 25 years changed in last few years from shorter but they have different degrees of 'rape' and it gets a tad confusing.

Whereas in UK there is no statute of limitations, for good reason. That people are left traumatised or trapped in awful situations for years and it can take a long time to be brave enough to speak out and in some cases, literally life/career threatening.

I think some people on this thread have some kind of cognitive dissonance going on about some of the brutal realities in the world and a severe lack of critical and independent thought.

Oh and someone also mentioned Vanity Fair with a question mark, they are surprisingly good with such matters, their legal battle with Roman Polanski in 2005 a case in point and their 2020 article on Ghislaine Maxwell 'On the Lam' (hilarious title Grin) is another.

SJP just made a statement on her Instagram account. In stories.

She said ‘we are deeply saddened to hear the allegations against Chris Noth. We support the women who have come forward and shared their painful experiences. It must have been a very difficult thing to do and we commend them for it’

Signed Sarah, Cynthia and Kristen.

stalkersaga · 21/12/2021 10:00

It's a bit mealy-mouthed as a statement, it's very carefully worded to express sympathy with the women without any confirmation that SJP, CN and KD believe that CN raped them. It stinks of "we'll see which way the wind is blowing before we say anything".

The wind appears not to be blowing due Noth; BBC says he's been dropped from a bunch of stuff.

Pickledlipstick · 21/12/2021 10:05

Wow with friends like that eh? Think she is obsessed with him as I’ve noticed her comment on loads of his Instagram posts. Funny how up until the other day they all really liked him? What has changed as surely you believe your friend unless he has done something to you in which case why are you even friends with them ? They have thrown him under the bus to tell the public what they think they want to hear and save their own reputations. To hell with whether he is guilty or not.

stalkersaga · 21/12/2021 10:41

That's basic social media strategy. They had a show together (for one episode anyway) so to help drive engagement with it, SJP's social media manager will have made a point of interacting a lot with Noth's social media, knowing that it gets attention and feeds shipping.

I hate to break it to you, but when two actors who work together have a social media love-in, it doesn't necessarily reflect their true feelings for each other.

TV and film is business first and foremost. I'm a little saddened but not surprised by the obvious calculatedness of the statement and the fact that an army of publicists have vetted every word and stripped every shred of honesty or vulnerability from it. But this is how Hollywood works. Noth isn't being dropped because Hollywood people are morally outraged about what he's done. They all knew. He's being dropped because he's now a commercial liability.

mastertomsmum · 28/12/2021 15:26

Well it seems like he was quite predatory, using his fame to try it on fairly openly. The allegations are fairly damning and at least one might be in the date limit for a legal case.

I see why things come out in public in this way and if someone is a serial offender then it will all come to public domain at some point now that women feel more empowered in the post me too era.

The next step of empowerment is for womankind to try to get justice without the trial by media being necessary. Sometimes that does seem like it’s not gonna work but you’ve gotta hope things are changing and it will.

Hospedia · 29/12/2021 10:19

Two more women have come forward, one is a singer-songwriter and the other worked on SATC. One of them has said that she didn't come forward at the time because he threatened to ruin her life and career if she did.

Theunamedcat · 29/12/2021 10:28

They can't put out a statement condemning him or supporting him he hasn't been found guilty or innocent yet

At least they acknowledged the women coming forward

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 29/12/2021 10:39

He had a bar when I lived there and was well known for getting behind the bar and showing off by grabbing at the female bar staff. I had friends who used to perform there. He also used to come into the club I worked in at the time with the SATC crew. Weirdly he was quite nice to me- I didn't know who he was when I first met him so just chatted to him normally. Not surprised in the least by these allegations though.

Pickledlipstick · 29/12/2021 11:22

He is very handsome still and has a family. World at his feet.. such a shame is it is true.

Pickledlipstick · 29/12/2021 11:22

If it is true that should have said
