London theatre tomorrow? Wwyd

Shall we go stay?
If people are staying away hopefully the theatre won't be packed, apparently they have good air ventilation which cleans the air?
We can drive in and get a taxi to avoid public transport. Not sure what to do.
All boosted a week ago, perhaps not long enough?
Dc recently had covid in late Sept /October.

Sick of this ‘that there London’ attitude as if we are all running around like slavering covid infested zombies all over theatre land and the west end to ruin everyone’s Christmasses! It’s a bit ridiculous. It was like this last Christmas too when everyone was slating Londoners leaving the capital (BEFORE the lockdown announcement, we played by the rules and we stayed here) for bringing covid home to their families.

FWIW I’ll be at the theatre today, travelling by public transport from one part of London to another, hopefully watching the show I want to see, no drama.

tangyandsalty · 17/12/2021 08:14

Have you got any of the decent N95 masks? They sell them in boots, I would get those and go.

I'm not sure why you're taking it so personally. It's because London is a big city with lots of people who commute in and out.

Here's the other thread:

And remember to check tomorrow if the performance is going ahead - some shows have had to cancel performances at short notice.

Hbh17 · 17/12/2021 08:22

Just go! There is absolutely no reason to stay away, and theatre badly needs all our support (I have been twice in London recently).

WheelieBinPrincess · 17/12/2021 08:23

Yeeeess @Clymene I’m aware of that…having been here for ten years. It’s more reflecting the attitude of these kinds of posts.

WheelieBinPrincess · 17/12/2021 08:24

If anyone wants to support the music or theatre industry last minute this Christmas, Twickets has absolutely loads of stuff going for a song as people desperately try and offload their tickets. Royal Albert Hall, Frozen, the Libertines, Madness and lots more.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 09:09

Plexie it's Mary Poppins Prince Edward.
Apparently they have very good ventilating system??

reluctantbrit · 17/12/2021 09:12

We are going next week Wednesday to the Royal Albert Hall. I am waiting for months for this, Christmas doesn't feel right this year again so I am desperate for something normal.

We won't go to dinner beforehand and avoid the tube. We also have to show our vaccination passports and if people don't have one they have to show a LFT result.

We don't have plans for Christmas, won't see anyone until NYE so I am willing to take the risk.

Proper FFP2 masks instead of cloth or the blue ones.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 09:13

How very dare you question my attitude.

Of course people are wary of going into one of the most densely crowded cities on earth which has sky high rates of the most incredible fast moving virus, days before Xmas.

I'm just trying to gage how busy it is.
I don't live far away and usually travel in A few few times a month.
Risk assessment.
I'd be more than happy to give feedback if someone was aksing about visiting our town which is a huge tourist destination!!

We're going to theatre in Edinburgh today. Only change in plans is that my elderly mum has dropped out but the rest of us are going.

Bunnycat101 · 17/12/2021 09:15

“Sick of this ‘that there London’ attitude as if we are all running around like slavering covid infested zombies all over theatre land.”

I work in and love London but the reality is for me the risk is much higher just by the nature of the population size and movement in and out of the city.

The current situation is just such a disaster for the arts and hospitality industries and I’m sure many people will be torn this weekend re what to do for the best.

YerAWizardHarry · 17/12/2021 09:16

I was at the Edinburgh Playhouse last weekend with a sold out performance with 3000 people. Didn’t feel anymore risky than walking down the Main Street in Edinburgh

santasmuma · 17/12/2021 09:17

I would plan not to go at this stage, so many shows have been cancelled over the past few days it's not worth the risk

FazedNotPhased · 17/12/2021 09:21

I live in London and I wouldn't be going to the theatre. I've cancelled most stuff. I don't want to be isolating, I don't want to be ill, I don't want to do things I don't have to do right now.

Not sure why @WheelieBinPrincess thinks this is derogatory towards Londoners. We've got high cases. We should be careful, and visitors should think twice. It's not personal FFS

WheelieBinPrincess · 17/12/2021 09:27

Ok sorry. I’m personally vested in the arts industry which is crumbling around our bloody ears.

The comment that ‘everyone in London’ could have omicron also rubbed me up the wrong way, because that did sound a tad dramatic.

Babdoc · 17/12/2021 09:28

A third of Londoners have had no vaccination at all. They have the worst uptake in the country. Their Covid numbers are surging, unsurprisingly.
If you still want to go, OP, avoid public transport and restaurants/bars. Get the best medical grade mask you can, but be prepared for the fact that you are still taking a considerable exposure risk in a crowded theatre for a couple of hours, sharing air where up to a third of the audience are unvaccinated.

WheelieBinPrincess · 17/12/2021 09:29

@Babdoc

But a third of the theatre goers won’t be Londoners will they.

They’ll be tourists and out of towners, mostly.

TikTokBitches · 17/12/2021 09:31

I went to a London theatre last night, there was no empty seats, they was asking all adults to wear a mask and most did. I don't have any plans to see anyone at Christmas so I was happy to go. I actually forgot about covid for a bit whilst there. It was nice to do something "normal".

rookiemere · 17/12/2021 09:33

It may have felt no different risk wise, but the reality is that when you're walking down a crowded street at most you'll have a couple of minutes contact with infected people with the open air to disperse the germs.

Indoors for a couple of hours if you were beside someone with covid is clearly going to run a higher chance of catching it.

I'm not saying don't go, but it's important to risk assess accurately rather than based on feelings.

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 17/12/2021 09:39

I was at Hamilton Tuesday night, the tubes were not busy, it was easy enough to keep our distance from others. In the theatre there were very few empty seats everyone wore masks, we also needed covid passports to get in.

The shows have been canceled since though as the cast have covid issue now.

Keep an eye on the show your going to some have been cancelled very last minute in the last few days for different shows due to covid.

superram · 17/12/2021 09:39

You won’t want to miss Mary poppins, it is great. I went last week with someone who has since tested positive and I didn’t catch it, we were also on the tube and had dinner together. Only you can decide but I’d go-we are in for a miserable winter.

dreamingbohemian · 17/12/2021 09:40

If your Christmas won't be ruined if you get it, then I'd be tempted to still go

I'm in London and it's crazy how many people I know have tested positive this week, and lots of friends saying the same, so personally I'm not offended by people thinking we're all slavering COVID zombies :) we kind of are!

HundredMilesAnHour · 17/12/2021 10:00

Of course people are wary of going into one of the most densely crowded cities on earth

OP I appreciate you're nervous but please give the hyperbole a rest. London is far from being one of the "most densely crowded cities on earth".

I live in central London and I've cancelled all my pre-Christmas plans. Part of why this variant is spreading so quickly in London is because so many people are insisting on coming into town to shop, eat and see a show as if Covid never existed. And then they blame Londoners for spreading it!
