If you had someone staying on your sofa on the spur of the moment

What would/could you provide them with?

A friend stayed after a night out. I really struggled to give them much at all. I had to take a pillow off my bed, give them a child's sleeping bag. I did find a towel and was able to give them a new toothbrush.

Are you properly kitted out to receive guests, even if it happens rarely and you don't have a guest room?

We camp quite a lot so have the pillows and sleeping bags we take camping and also cushions and a big heavy throw that live on the sofas. Also have several air beds and self inflating mats that could be used on the floor. We never have anyone staying over though

emmathedilemma · 16/12/2021 14:34

I have a spare double bed, a double airbed and a single airbed and could equip them all with sheets and a duvet at the same time, plus a sleeping bag if anyone needed to use the sofa, but might have to pinch some pillows off the beds. Plenty of towels too although I don't have any spare toothbrushes apart from an airline freebie one at the moment (I've literally just put them on the shopping list).

Mabelface · 16/12/2021 14:34

I have a couple of spare duvets and pillows, but my adult kids stay over sometimes so I need to be prepared.

Jourdain11 · 16/12/2021 14:35

We had DH's brother staying on the couch spur of the moment about 10 years ago. He stayed for 6 months! When I got pregnant and incredibly moody and hormonal, I got super moody and he decided not to stay any more Blush

BIWI · 16/12/2021 14:35

Loads of extra bedding/pillows/towels. Several airline freebie toothbrushes.

BlingLoving · 16/12/2021 14:40

Yes, we would have no problem. Have a few spare duvets and duvet covers and sheets lying around, too many pillows on every bed, lots of towels. I don't routinely keep spare toothbrushes so that might be a problem unless I'd happened to buy a pack the week before. But otherwise it wouldn't be a problem.

I'm a bit surprised that most people don't have at least a few spares. What happens if you're unexpectedly ill or something gets spilled on your bed or whatever?

RampantIvy · 16/12/2021 14:41

We have 2 spare bedrooms as we don't have family near us, so when they visit they have somewhere to sleep. One bedroom has a king-size bed and the other has 2 IKEA chairs that unfold into beds. I have enough bedding, duvets and pillows to accommodate 4 guests.

bigbluebus · 16/12/2021 14:43

We've got 3 spare bedrooms so wouldn't be an issue here. But if there wasn't a spare room we have 2 x airbeds or 2 x campbeds as we go camping every year. We also have 3 sleeping bags and multiple spare double duvets (due to DS never bringing his home from Uni to wash and me buying him new ones to take back!)
There's always spare toothbrushes and toothpaste and an airing cupboard full of towels so it wouldn't be a problem here.

LittleBabyCheeses · 16/12/2021 14:43

We don’t have a spare room (we have 3 kids) but we do have spare bedding/pillows/towels etc. I think we have a couple of new toothbrushes in the airing cupboard.

fallfallfall · 16/12/2021 14:48

Yes, one of those adulting things. Even if it’s initially kitted out very cheaply. Store in a vacuum seal bag (takes up less space).

Beamur · 16/12/2021 14:50

We have a spare room and also camp so I could probably rustle up comfortable beds for half a dozen people without too much trouble

KatharinaRosalie · 16/12/2021 14:50

Plenty of spare bedding and towels. It's not uncommon to have more than one set of bedding and more than 1 towel, had more than that even when I was totally skint. Isn't laundry otherwise a little challenging, you have to wait for everything to dry the same day?

ponkydonkey · 16/12/2021 14:52

Yes I have a few spare clean mattress toppers, sheets, duvets, pillows and throws

We do have quite a few guests and a spare room
But the sofa is also very comfy

Gizlotsmum · 16/12/2021 14:53

We could offer them a camp bed, sofa bed or real bed by decamping one of the kids. We have spares of all bedding and toothbrushes and towels.

RoseMartha · 16/12/2021 14:58

I have an air bed and the sofa. Spare single duvet and sheet and covers and a sleeping bag. Plus a couple of fleece throws. Spare towels and a toothbrush. One spare pillow and have an extra one on my bed. Could manage to put 2 people up.

They would have to share the lounge.

DoodleBelle · 16/12/2021 15:06

We have a storage sofa so just store extra blankets and pillows in there in case anyone stays or we fancy a day snuggled on the sofa

2bazookas · 16/12/2021 15:07

Family who often sleepover, all keep a toothbrush at our place plus some spare clothes. We have enough beds/rooms for a couple of guests but any overflow would bring their own sleeping bags/campamats to sleep on the floor. We have plenty of pillows, towels etc.

MaryHingey · 16/12/2021 15:18

Yes, spare bedrooms etc but only two new toothbrushes
Clean towels, new toothpaste ready in every bathroom but that's through habit for us not because I'm organised for them staying
Although I would nod and smile when they complimented me on it Grin

LittleRedLeaf · 16/12/2021 15:18

Spare room with a proper bed, sheets etc. There's a sofa bed in DD's room but no duvet for it except a spare single. Loads of pillows though. Plenty of blankets and towels and I buy a new pack of toothbrushes/shampoo/etc when I replace them so there's always unopened spares of everything like that.

Isseywith3witchycats · 16/12/2021 15:23

i have a spare duvet sheet and pillow and they would find themselves snuggling with three cats as they stay downstairs not in our room

AperolWhore · 16/12/2021 15:25

We have a spare room which is actually the nicest room in the house but we often have more than one guest staying over and a large sofa so we have spare bottom sheets and bedding, pillows and duvets plus towels. I don’t offer toothbrushes but we do always have bread and pastries in the freezer for emergency breakfasts

IntermittentParps · 16/12/2021 15:44

Duvets and covers, pillows and cases. Lots of towels. A bedside lamp (well, a tall reading light that can be manouevred over to the sofa). Currently have a fresh toothbrush as I bought a multipack a while ago, but that's not always the case. T-shirts/vest tops/long-sleeved tops and PJ trousers if they want something to wear in bed, although obviously that's size-dependent.
Always have a loaf of bread, butter, nut butter, honey, avocado, jam. Usually eggs. Can scratch up cereal if required (the lodger usually has some) and milk if they're OK with non-dairy. There's usually fruit. Proper coffee, obviously, and lots of teas, caffeinated and herbal.
Reading that, I think it sounds not bad being an overnight guest chez Parps Grin

AuntieMarys · 16/12/2021 15:46

2 spare rooms always made up. Guest bathroom, loads of towels, toiletries.

negomi90 · 16/12/2021 16:10

I have a sofa bed, with storage in it. It has a full set of bedding in it. I since moved from a 1 bed to a 2 bed flat, so I now have a spare room. It has a single bed, with a full set of bedding. It's always made up with clean sheets and so has it's own set of bedding.
In addition to that I have a sleeping bag, an extra set of sheets (from my own bed) and a double air bed stashed away (from before I got my sofa).
I'd have to an extra clean and tidy, but the sleeping is sorted.

TuftyMarmoset · 16/12/2021 16:26

We have a single sofa/chair bed thing in the study and single bedding for it, also a double inflatable bed and a spare set of bedding we could put on that. Also camping mats and sleeping bags and loads of blankets on the sofa. We’ve got a bunch of spare toothbrushes from hotels and a few spare towels.
So actually pretty well prepared, although we’ve lived here for 2 years and never had anyone stay.
