If you had someone staying on your sofa on the spur of the moment

What would/could you provide them with?

A friend stayed after a night out. I really struggled to give them much at all. I had to take a pillow off my bed, give them a child's sleeping bag. I did find a towel and was able to give them a new toothbrush.

Are you properly kitted out to receive guests, even if it happens rarely and you don't have a guest room?

@Jourdain11

We had DH's brother staying on the couch spur of the moment about 10 years ago. He stayed for 6 months! When I got pregnant and incredibly moody and hormonal, I got super moody and he decided not to stay any more Blush
You could have asked him to leave, getting pregnant seems a bit of a drastic way to evict him!Wink

We have a blow up single bed and some spare bedding . I could find bedding and a toothbrush usually.
We nearly got stuck at BILs once and he literally pointed at the floor as the only option (we managed to get home). In my youth I slept in my clothes/coat at his as he didn’t understand why we needed any bedding.

Jourdain11 · 16/12/2021 23:02

Haha @Notthissticky, it was not actually deliberate (in any sense). It was pretty awkward, he was totally taking the piss but also broke and DP as was then didn't really feel able to tell him to go. And I felt that I couldn't because it was between them. But he smoked weed constantly on the roof and I hated it! And he never did the washing up. Or contributes towards the bills. Ugh, still pisses me off even remembering...

Wellhungdonkey · 16/12/2021 23:02

I’m not prepared at all but stayed at a friends unexpectedly and it was like a boutique hotel. Luxury toiletry basket fresh fluffy bath towels, guest robes. I would be kicking knickers under beds and scraping for pillows.

StartingGrid · 16/12/2021 23:35

Sofa guests could have a selection of blankets and a choice of cats!

Bobsyer · 16/12/2021 23:42

We have no spare beds but are planning on getting at least one sofa bed.

We do have two massive sofas which can and have been slept on, we also have lots of spare sheets, blankets and pillows. I actually recently gave away 4 extra duvets we'd somehow managed to acquire.

icedcoffees · 17/12/2021 06:44

We have no spare beds - our spare room is a gym/home office with no adequate floor space.

Our sofa does convert to a small double but we have no spare pillows or duvets / guests could use blankets, throw cushions and borrow one of three cats for warmth Grin

ivykaty44 · 17/12/2021 06:53

Double duvet in airing cupboard along with 4 pillows and a choice of about 4 duvet covers

2 sleeping bags

No spare toothbrushes
Two sofas over 6 foot

Amichelle84 · 17/12/2021 06:55

We don't have a spare room but have a sofa bed but the actual sofa is comfier.

We have lots of extra towels and bedding anyway so they'd just use that. We have a few blankets and a spare duvet and pillows too.

Halfwreckedbykids · 17/12/2021 07:01

I ve a sofa bed in the office and loads of sofas but only 1 spare duvet.
Have camping gear but hadn't thought of that till someone mentioned it.

The one good thing about the past 2 years is that our house has evolved for the people who live in it. Used to have spare rooms but they ve become studies/games rooms for the kids.

PegasusReturns · 17/12/2021 07:03

We have a spare bed and a sofa bed and plenty of bed linen/duvets/pillows.

The only issue I might potentially have is towels: despite the linen cupboard being stuffed when all are clean and dry, it’s not uncommon for the 4DC to get through 2-3 a day and me to be scrambling for a clean one for my own shower Shock

YouMadeABear · 17/12/2021 07:06

That sounds horrendous. I don't like having people stay over. We have plenty of blankets and a comfy couch in an emergency but I wouldn't encourage people by having spare toothbrushes and spare bedrooms Grin

If it's a rare preplanned visit from close family then the DC bunk in together (happily) and we use one of their rooms to host.

jendifer · 17/12/2021 07:10

Spare bed and a few air beds but it isn’t currently made up and is covered in Christmas presents! Lots of bedding and sleeping bags but I’m not sure where normal pillows are, only tiny camping ones.
I think we have a spare toothbrush?! Prob not as well sorted as we think we are!

Lovelydovey · 17/12/2021 07:14

We have a double air bed, spare pillows and summerwieght duvets (which we could put together) and lots of blankets. W could put that up in the lungs or one of the kids rooms. I could offer you a clean towel and toothbrush and toiletries.

Livpool · 17/12/2021 07:15

I would have some blankets but no spare pillows. Lots of towels and maybe a child's toothbrush DS never used ha

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 17/12/2021 07:16

We don't have a guest bedroom but do have two rooms other than the kitchen and living room, which are places adult guests could sleep, though they're used daily as office, second living/ gaming/ TV room (DH works from home plus 3 teens). One room has a sofa bed and we have two single foldable guest mattress things suited to kids/ teens or healthy adults who can sleep on a mattress on the floor.

We have plenty of spare bedding stuff due to kid/ teen spontaneous sleep overs and past phases of camping. We have excessive towels and duvet covers due to fil giving us 3/4 of his when he moved from the family house to a small flat after mil died.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 17/12/2021 07:20

We always have spare new toothbrushes in store due to the fact that they need replacing every six weeks.

bluechameleon · 17/12/2021 07:22

We have sleeping bags for camping. We also have spare duvets for each of the children's beds in case of wetting. Not sure we have spare pillows but there are plenty of cushions hanging around. There are always toothbrushes in the bathroom drawer and flannels and towels in the cupboard.

CelebrateAndDreamofNewYear · 17/12/2021 07:28

Yes, I've got stacks of spare pillows, a couple of duvets, loads of sheets, covers and throws etc! All packed away in my garage from a 'previous life' when I had a nice big house with lots of bedrooms 🤣

I don't really need them all...and will get around to sorting everything eventually I'm sure 🤦‍♀️ I'll just keep one spare set at that point 👍

catfunk · 17/12/2021 07:30

Yes we have a spare bed, bedding, loads of wool blankets, towels, spare aeroplane type toothbrushes etc

Ragwort · 17/12/2021 07:49

We have a spare bedroom (two if Uni DS is not home), also DH & I sleep separately so technically we would have three spare bedrooms if essential. Plenty of spare duvets, bed linen, new toothbrushes etc.

Rooms aren't necessarily clean and tidy though Grin.
