Hot tub next to our lounge

Icenii · 16/12/2021 13:04

New neighbours appear to be building a hot tub a metre away from our lounge windows. Their garden wraps around, there is a fence and then our lounge right next to the fence. It's going to be awful.

Oh no I feel for you! My ex neighbors had one that was about 10 feet from my kitchen doors and the noise from them (music, shouting) and the smell was utterly unbearable.

I do not understand why people have them!

CharSiu · 16/12/2021 13:15

I hate them, a neighbour two doors down has one and the noise when they are shouting is awful, I assume they have to talk loudly to be heard over the noise of the bubbles and motor. Plus they are probably drunk. I think planning permission with x metres away from all boundaries would be great but noise nuisance is not taken seriously.

Icenii · 16/12/2021 13:19

Can they even put it this close to our house? I guess I'll have to contact the council and record all the noise. Surely noone can argue against the noise, even down to the heating.

It'll be noisy

DillDanding · 16/12/2021 13:21

How annoying. They really could have consulted you. The council might ask you to keep a noise diary if it’s reported as a nuisance.

MrsFin · 16/12/2021 13:22

@forrestgreen

It'll be noisy
It will be noisy and smelly.

People seem unable to use a hot tub on their own, it always has to be a hot tub party.

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/12/2021 13:24

My neighbour is currently making my house stink of cannabis. Some people are just bloody awful to live next to.

Icenii · 16/12/2021 13:30

In a foul bloody mood now.

We have one but hands up here that we only use it individually, late afternoons. And def no music, parties or boozing. We also keep the bubbles short do not to bother neighbours. We would hate to think we are disturbing anyone, but it is is possible to have one and be considerate too.

I really feel for you OP. I used to get pissed off when the neighbours put trampolines down the bottom of their gardens, away from their houses but near to ours.

I would put boundaries in from day one. They are very noisy things.

Loudestcat14 · 16/12/2021 13:34

I'd go and say something while they're still doing it. Just point out the proximity to your lounge is a cause for concern because of the noise. They may not realise how close it is.

MynameisWa · 16/12/2021 13:35

Depending on the type they have though the filter/heating element is not at all noisy on some and it may only be bad whilst having the bubbles going. So not a constant noise.

Icenii · 16/12/2021 13:38

If they house it in a structure it will block light too as our lounge gets the light from above the fence. We look out of our window onto the fence and down from a bedroom directly into where the hot tub is garden runs at an angle. If we have our windows open we will hear everything.

I used to live next to someone like this. I could hear them under my bedroom window late at night. We moved in the end and I later discovered she's in prison for fraud. She stole money from the care home she worked at and fraudulently took money from an oap. U never know op...

Rather than assuming the worst, why not ask them? Point out the challenges in relation to planning/light obstruction if a structure is over 6 feet and the potential for noise and ask them to reconsider.

As a pp has said, not all hot tubs are noisy

ShirleyPhallus · 16/12/2021 13:42

I know that this really isn’t in the spirit of MN, but could you go and have a rational discussion with them now, before the thing actually goes in?

It could be quite amicable - you explain your concerns and ask them if they could move it further away etc. The might even do it, then no need for the frothing and being in a foul mood

ShirleyPhallus · 16/12/2021 13:43

Grin good point, there is a direct correlation between people with hot tubs and those in prison for fraud.
Icenii · 16/12/2021 13:46

It's not the hot tub but the position. We are surrounded by 4 houses, and 2 of the others have them, but away from other people's houses. We can hear low level noise from them but not enough to be a nuisance.

Only the builders are there at the moment. I'm fairly certain most people would be put out but I guess posters love to get the MN word of 'frothing' into posts. Keeps them current.

OP posts:
teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/12/2021 13:48

@ShirleyPhallus I wasn't saying that ha ha. Sorry just having a joke. The story is true though but I know plenty of law abiding hot tub owners and didn't mean to offend anyone Smile

christmaspombear · 16/12/2021 13:51

Diagram.....

ShirleyPhallus · 16/12/2021 13:53

In the context of anger and a hot tub, I think the word frothing is very appropriate Wink

Icenii · 16/12/2021 13:53

H/L

H = hot tub

/ = fence

L = lounge

Ask them to put the pump away from you. My neighbour in spite of my asking the builders not to put the pump on my wall and it now wakes me up at 3 every morning. She also gets drunk and allows her teenage daughter to shout loudly in it. I put the house on the market and I’m out of there. I’d rather lose 10k moving costs than live next to those selfish bastards.

HideousKinky · 16/12/2021 14:00

A few posters have commented on the smell - I have never been in a hot tub so don't know what this smell is?

ItsDinah · 16/12/2021 14:05

Hot tubs are noisy and you could complain to the Council who could take action about noise nuisance. There is also a flooding risk. Our sewage branch pipe backed up for a week after the neighbour drained his. I would speak to them now asking for it to be relocated. I think you need to plant something against the fence to screen it. I've got a similar wrap-around by neighbours garden and planting made a big difference. I appreciate you won't have an open outlook but privacy can be more important.

MaryHingey · 16/12/2021 14:09

She put the pump on your wall @user1471462428, is that even legal?
