Salt lamps. Bollocks or ion particle cleanser?

DD has asked for one for Xmas. Apparently if I transfer £20 to her account, she will pick one up fromTKMAXX and her and her boyfriend will keep it for the flat they are planning to rent next year.
He is properly in tune with his body, vegan, meditation, chanting, —vaccination refuser—.
I am not fussed either way, it won’t break the bank, but I am curious

@JaneJeffer

Why can't you replace it *@Pinkstegosaurus*? I've just replaced mine.
The bulb exploded and half of it was wedged inside the actual plugged in bit so had to chuck it. Will eventually get around to replacing it!
OhGiveUp · 15/12/2021 20:31

@Pinkstegodaurus I use oven bulbs in mine, sometimes bulbs for fridges too. You should be able to use those in yours.

OhGiveUp · 15/12/2021 20:33

@Pinkstegosaurus Ignore my last, I've just seen that you've thrown it away.

So glad it's not just me who's licked a salt lamp before!

RustyBear · 15/12/2021 20:38

@DelurkingAJ

I would guess that if they cool the salt absorbs water from the air (as salt does) and when you turn it on you drive that water back out again…hence leaks.
So would it be enough to be useful as a dehumidifier (if you kept it on a tray to catch the water)?

Keep an eye out in Lidl. Theirs are 8.99 usually. Identical to the more expensive ones.

Gwrach · 15/12/2021 20:42

I have nothing productive to add except giggling at the toddlers/drunk adults licking them 😂

A friend has one, it does give off a nice glow in her bedroom though.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 15/12/2021 20:42

I visited a salt mine with friends on holiday and we all kept taking sneaky licks of the walls, we must have looked like complete nut jobs Grin so I can see myself being very tempted to lick one of these lamps if I had one...

gukvguk · 15/12/2021 20:44

I had one for years. Had no idea it had any magical properties though! I've lost some of my vegan cred there.

It's been 'melting' this year though leaving crumbling salt everywhere so it had to go,

PilatesPeach · 15/12/2021 20:45

I had 3 and one definitely did leak all over my bedside table a grey water and stained it - the other 2 are fine. I do find it helps me sleep.

towers14 · 15/12/2021 21:43

I've bought one for Dd for Xmas, she's really into the power of crystals. Wether they work or not is irrelevant it's the belief of the power that matters.

Chugalug21 · 15/12/2021 22:48

surely the issue is that this is a present for the boyfriend really?? He 'will keep it for the flat they are planning to rent next year'. Shouldnt dd reap the benefits till then? get him a lynx set !

NigelWithTheBrie79 · 16/12/2021 01:51

I wanted one but didn't bother after ds who was 8 at the time pointed at my cousins and said "That looks like Father Jack's earwax candle mum!" My cousin didn't know what he meant at that point as she didn't know about or watch Father Ted but when she did she was really pissed offGrin

immersivereader · 16/12/2021 02:09

We have one. I love it, lovely glow.
