Salt lamps. Bollocks or ion particle cleanser?

DD has asked for one for Xmas. Apparently if I transfer £20 to her account, she will pick one up fromTKMAXX and her and her boyfriend will keep it for the flat they are planning to rent next year.
He is properly in tune with his body, vegan, meditation, chanting, —vaccination refuser—.
I am not fussed either way, it won’t break the bank, but I am curious

Ours are on all the time and they still leak. We must just have more moisture in our house.

FindingMeno · 15/12/2021 16:51

I've got several. Really relaxing. Great nightlights.
But I'm not convinced of health benefits.

M0rT · 15/12/2021 16:55

I use for a bedroom light as it's soft, doesn't leak and I have never licked it.
Probably will the next time I get drunk now it's in my head though 😂
I don't believe it does anything but give off light, but no harm if it does.
Apparently the plug in scent things can be harmful though, so don't have any of those.

TheShadoutCrepes · 15/12/2021 16:55

An ion particle cleanser what now?

God give me strength.

DelurkingAJ · 15/12/2021 16:57

I would guess that if they cool the salt absorbs water from the air (as salt does) and when you turn it on you drive that water back out again…hence leaks.

chesirecat99 · 15/12/2021 16:57

Negative air ionisation has been shown to help depression and SAD but the salt lamps don't emit enough negative ions to make any difference.

On the other hand, the light from the lamps is absolutely gorgeous. And never underestimate the power of the placebo effect.

EmmaWoodhousestreehouse · 15/12/2021 17:04

Absolutely rubbish. Look nice but leak fluid. Ours leaked and wrecked my lovely wooden floor.

Hen2018 · 15/12/2021 17:13

Of course it’s all bollocks.

hivemindneeded · 15/12/2021 17:13

Salt lamps give a lovely soft glow. I'd be happy to give one.

EishetChayil · 15/12/2021 17:15

He doesn't sound like a lovely lad. He sounds like an arsehole.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 15/12/2021 17:18

Yep they leak if they get cold or it's particularly humid, noticed it with out that we kept on a windowsill one particularly cold winter.

OhGiveUp · 15/12/2021 17:19

I've had salt lamps for donkeys years, way before they became popular and I can honestly say that none of them have ever leaked anything.
Nor have my matching candle holders.
I don't know about the health bit or ions though, I've never thought about it.

museumum · 15/12/2021 17:24

I’ve had mine for years and years - not used much, never “leaked”.

It’s still rectangular while the ones at my yoga studio are more natural shaped, are you supposed to sand them down or something?

Forion · 15/12/2021 17:25

Ours don't leak. They do give off a nice glow.

Salt lamps. Bollocks or ion particle cleanser?
Icantremembermyusername · 15/12/2021 17:36

Mine 'leaked' once but only because the window was open and it got rained on.
It's pretty but I don't think my health has improved because of it!

Knittedfairies · 15/12/2021 17:49

Just about the only thing I remember from school chemistry; salt deliquesces

LoveMyPiano · 15/12/2021 18:02

I have one in my kitchen - and notice a difference in the ambience of the room when the bulb fails, which it did this morning (I have spares). Mine has never leaked - it was not as "cheap" some are now, but not sure if that's a factor. I had heard about the air purifying aspect, but would not rely on it - in fact, I would take it with a grain of -- salt.

I am getting another one for Christmas. They give off no heat whatsoever, but the room feels warmer with one gently glowing away in a corner or in the window.

PeterPomegranate · 15/12/2021 18:05

@FourTeaFallOut

Mine doesn't leak. I did have too much to drink and licked it once out of curiosity.
Grin Was it salty?
FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2021 18:13

Yes, it was! I wasn't sure it would be so quickly dissolvable as to be able taste it but turns out that isn't an issue. I won't be swapping the table salt for it though!

Pinkstegosaurus · 15/12/2021 18:15

I have one from TKMaxx, it used to look really pretty until the bulb blew in it which I now can’t replace Sad It still sits on a shelf bulbless looking mystical…can’t get a tealight up it’s bottom though.

JaneJeffer · 15/12/2021 18:23

Why can't you replace it @Pinkstegosaurus? I've just replaced mine.

ineedsun · 15/12/2021 18:26

What I don’t get is that I thought it was supposed to do something about electrical energy and getting rid of the bad vibes of it. Why put an electric light in it? I have a few with candles but don’t get the light thing

DownWhichOfLate · 15/12/2021 19:06

“A raving hippy in their back catalogue” Grin. Yep, we’ve all been there!

Chickydoo · 15/12/2021 19:18

Bollocks but very pretty
