What planet is Starmer on?

So, I vote Labour usually, I like their values etc. However wtf - at a time when Boris is vulnerable Starmer comes out tonight with a back up Boris speech? No need - the website has crashed, queues are huge - he didn’t need any reinforcement of his bag a booster message.
Just incredulous he’s wittering on.

He wants to look important.
He should let Boris Johnson crash and burn , not try and prop him up.
I didn't listen to it to be honest , he isn't in charge and the anti everything brigade won't listen to him either.
It's just bizarre.

Noeuf · 13/12/2021 19:14

It was bizarre. It was like the kid who gets to blow the candles out again on the birthday boy’s cake.

I feared this, I havent seen it, but nothing good was going to come of him giving a speech unless it was "Boris, you couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery, you cunt"

MintJulia · 13/12/2021 19:18

Maybe he thinks that people will be best protected by having a booster, and wanted to add his weight to that message. You know, to protect people! To reduce hospitalisations and deaths !

Maybe he puts people's lives before small-minded party political squabbling Hmm

Noeuf · 13/12/2021 19:18

It was basically ‘Boris is right, could have been a bit sooner, we back Plan B’

What did you want him to do? I think he made it plain that Labour is the party that will protect the NHS. If course he is urging us all to get our booster - that works for me.

There are times to attack Johnson at al, tomorrow is not that time, when the votes on the new measures takes place. He explained why Labour will be supporting g this odious government, when, it's alleged, that 80+ Tory MPs will be voting against.

Noeuf · 13/12/2021 19:20

@MintJulia but they are - it’s not like people didn’t respond to the speech - all the centres have massive queues, LFDs out of stock, website overloaded

I've never liked him ( I also have never voted Conservative) he isn't the man for this job anyway.
This stunt has made me wary of him now.
I understand that they want what is best for the country , but we don't need him doing an address to the country either
Men and their egos.

Noeuf · 13/12/2021 19:20

I don’t see the need for him to cheerlead Boris really. People are getting vaccinated. It was just a really wet, pointless speech.

Only a fool would vote against the extra measures.
MintJulia · 13/12/2021 19:23

So he doesn't want to undermine that.

And there will still be the inevitable people who refuse a booster
because they don't like Boris...

the80sweregreat · 13/12/2021 19:23

Politics is bizarre though
Boris Johnson will get his restrictions through because of Labour , but an awful lot of his own MPs will vote against it!
I know it's democracy in action and weird times, but I still find it bizarre.

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 19:25

I’m not listening

And I feel a bit sorry for him for some reason

Just too hard to deal with right now

Yes, this.

I’ve lost all patience with him. I was really excited to get someone who was on a level field with Johnson superficially - educated, sanitised, could maybe tempt a few across from centre right. Lost all hope now.

Jesus - it's not a stunt. He's putting people's lives and the NHS above party politics. Boris is in self destruct mode and his own party have for the knives out for him. Starmer doesn't need to get his hands dirty.

It's not the Leader of the Opposition's job to just disagree with the PM regardless you know!

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 19:31

It was a decent speech if what you are trying to do is win back disaffected ex-labour voters:

  • Union flag tick
  • Family photo tick
  • Smart suit tick
  • Brushed hair tick
  • 'patriotic' tick
  • 'NHS heroes' tick

Basically he looked normal, reliable and competent.

You can't go in all guns blazing when we're facing another covid crisis.

Quite. The OP appears to arguing for KS to message against medical advice so he can win political points. Just when I think MN cannot get any more ridiculous….!
rrhuth · 13/12/2021 19:32

I think starmer is genuinely worried and prioritising health. Rightly.

Poetrypatty · 13/12/2021 19:34

He's showing a credible alternative. I'd be relieved to have him as PM rather than the Clown. It shows us what that would be like, I think that's what he was doing.

Puppylucky · 13/12/2021 19:34

Keir is reinforcing Johnson's weakness to the parliamentary party. If its evident that the Plan B legislation only gets through the Parliamentary vote because of Labour support then that's a major nail in Johnson's coffin. It's called playing the long game

readwhatiactuallysay · 13/12/2021 19:36

Hasnt starmer come out and said that boris johnson is not fit to be in power etc??? I havent seen todays speach but he wasn't blowing any candles out when he was saying Boris Johnson needs to be out a few days ago.

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 19:36

I should add I don’t mind that he did it.

If it helps lift booster numbers then it all helps.
